Sengoku Nagashino Feedback Thread
Hi Sengoku Nagashino players - please deposit your thoughts here for designer digestion as the first round of games resolves.

Please do not directly comment on the situation/players etc. of any active games. Please limit your comments to the variant design itself, as it appears at gamestart. Once a game has completed, it is fair game for analysis, but not before please.

Known World Tournament
Awhile back, kaner proposed a Known World gunboat tournament in which 15 participants would play 15 games, one with each nation. I searched back for the thread, then just decided to start a new one. I want to see if there would be sufficient interest in this to try to get it off the ground.

Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

obsolete Sengoku variant
Hi all, designer of Sengoku here. I would love to get the latest version of Sengoku in use on this system, as it is much more balanced. Found here: http://dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Sengoku
Even if the DP system, can't be used, the version at http://nairenvorbeck.angelfire.com/ is still better than the one in use currently. Poor Mori needs a fair chance :-) Anyone willing/able to help me get these implemented?

It's time to talk about Scoring
Hello all!

Let's talk about scoring? More specifically, about whether the dreaded Points Per Supply Center (PPSC) scoring should remain an option?

If SoS were implemented the same as PPSC (as has been suggested, not withstanding d-ice and Eriador's latest posts) in the case of a solo, the winner would get screwed just as he gets screwed in PPSC.

If you implement it *only* for draws as they both suggest, then mouse is right that the draw takes longer as people jockey for position/points. We have enough draw reduction going on as it is, no need to make it be worse by having people intentionally protect 1 SC nations for the draw so their SoS percentage goes up.

And, in the end, will still come back to point distortion is occurring with PPSC as implemented, SoS implemented like PPSC, and SoS only implemented in draws.

Truly, the best scoring is WTA with draws acting like a cancel where everyone gets back what they put in, even the eliminated nations. A 3 way draw or a 5 way draw is irrelevant. There were no winners and there should be no reward or punishment.

@YouCan't

The winner doesn't get "screwed" - he still gets a considerable part of the pot, even more than under PPSC. Almost half of solos here on vDip are under PPSC, and still no sign of apocalypse on the horizon.

"Draw reduction" already happens - even more heavily - under WTA, since everyone has to share the pot equally. Under SoS, there is few need for "draw reduction" since you'll probably win much more by simply conquering centers off larger/more meaningful opposition.

In SoS, there is no such thing as protecting a 1 SC nation - I never heard of it to be frank. SoS's logic is that of taking in as many centers as possible, so it's hard to imagine a context where it's more valuable to keep the minor player alive. Perhaps the reason for it exists, but even if it does, it's rare enough to be irrelevant.

I agree that the best score is WTA (which shouldn't mean it has to be the *only* score!), but I don't get your point about "draws acting like a cancel", where even eliminated powers get their points back. Are you talking about Draw Zero Scoring? I kinda like it, if not for 1) it makes the grind towards stalemate lines even more boring than they already are and 2) ABC liked rewarding draws.

I would vote for Thaddeus Black's system of "Draw-Disvalued" Scoring (50% of points is Draw-Zero, 50% under Calhamer Scoring). But again, it leaves a question about how short games should be scored - SoS is still my favorite option.

Black's article on Diplomacy World #133 is great too. Page 19.

http://www.diplomacyworld.net/pdf/dw133.pdf
@Enriador - He should get all of the pot. There should be no points for second place. Period. Therefore, he still gets screwed.
You already provided the example for SoS keeping the small player alive. Let's say 1st place solos but has only two moderate size opponents. He gets fewer points than if he solod but kept 4 small opponents. 18-8-8 versus 18-4-4-4-4. Do the math and you'll see he makes out better keeping a bunch of little ones alive. Now do 18-3-3-3-3-3-1 or better yet 18-3-3-3-3-2-2.
And my argument against providing the option is the same argument against providing PPSC to begin with. It distorts points for *everyone* even those who don't play that scoring system. Until we eliminate or find a way to separate the points out, there should only be one scoring system, Alan C's preferred WTA.

@YouCan't

I agree that the solo deserves the entire pot, but it's an adaptation whose advantages outweight the disadvantages. PPSC already works that way to no one's despair.

I already talked about SoS being about "divide and conquer". It's working as designed: the more you divide an opposition, the more likely you are to solo, so you get more points. I don't see anything wrong with that particular aspect of the rules you keep bringing up. Sorry if I am misinterpretating something!

Calhamer Scoring (WTA's real name) is overall good, but good soloists like you and me shouldn't support it *if the ultimate goal is to reduce draws and incentive solos*. I mean, a 2-way draw is worth half a solo?! Really?

ABC himself admitted the shortcomings of his scoring system. We should be willing to consider adding new *options* - heck, even Draw Zero Scoring is interesting as hell.

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!
