The End Of The World Diplomacy IX (LIVE)
So, in honor of the Mayan Apocalypse, I want to start a World Diplomacy IX live game on here. Is anyone interested, and what's a good time for you? I want to have it on the 21st, or the night before, spilling over into the early morning hours.

Taking over some Imperial Diplomacy II games?
After joining a few Imperial Diplomacy II games, I found out I didn't like the variant and I didn't have enough time for the games. I don't want to make the game unenjoyable for others, and I don't want to NMR, but I'm afraid I might have to if my life stays busy. If anyone wants to take over one or two Imperial Diplomacy games with all-right positions, please PM me and I'll tell you the details.

WWIV Team Game!!!
Hey, id like to start a team game, but only if there is an alternative to the three person team. Would anyone like to share insight on how to get it started? Would anyone like to commit to a game (regardless of whether or not you have a teammate in mind)??

Imperial Dip II(new map) suggestion
Wasnt sure where else to post this, but on the WWIV map, when submitting orders, it's been invaluable that when lands are noted at only initials even on the blown up map, that the initials are also in parantheses when you're submitting orders, it's very confusing right now in some select regions

suggestion in order to reduce misorders
I don't want to annoy you with a discussion about the issues from misorders.
Simply they usually happen. Expecially when you have to handle a large number of units and you're not familiar with the regions' names. It's not unusual to make mistakes with all those large map variants.

Don't the Dutch have South Africa due to the Boers' influence (Dutch settlers)? Technically it should be owned by the British but the Boer influence was probably stronger within the territory.

Right Amby. The old flag, to begin with.
Recall Dutch flag?
http://www.faqs.org/docs/factbook/flags/nl-lgflag.gif
well, old southafrican flag was basically a Dutch flag with ORANGE in place of red, and 3 small flags inside, in which I'm sure you'll find a couple of smaller Dutch flags.

Well, the game starts in 1861 and even if the Dutch didn't legally control the land, they still had the stronger influence in the area.

Thank you, Oliver! This map is extremely fun and has been thouroughly playtested in the PBEM community. It's not without somehistorical quirks of course, and it has some stagnanation spots if you're looking to play it purely tactically, but that makes it great for DIPLOMACY! Also The thirteen player roster allows for global play with fewer NMRs and CDS, particularly if you can recruit reliable players, something that is difficult to do with the 35 player map. Michael would be honored that you adapted his variant for play here.

With the provided RealPolitic-files it was not that hard.
I did some visual enhancements, the BuildAnyHome-rule was a nice new build variation and the Constantinople-rule took some time, but the boring border creation was really easy and I could reuse most of the code from other variants.

"Well, the game starts in 1861 and even if the Dutch didn't legally control the land, they still had the stronger influence in the area."

This is the basis for the game design, and for various playability reasons. It's not a perfect historical set up, but what variant is? Playtesting attempts at improving the variant have been made to put Spain into the game and loosen up some impassable zones, which would improve play, but these never made it to the RP files. I have some files buries away somewhere that we in discussion once upon a time, but Michael lost interest in Diplomacy (probably found a girlfriend/wife!).

Also realistically Australia would have British colonies in NSW & QLD (and where is Tasmania & Victoria?).
fasces349 (1007 D)

There is a difference between noone having the land (and in Australia's case the only person with access to that land is Britian so it will so be corrected) and having the wrong power own the land.

I',m not sure what you are arguing about F349. The Dutch were clearly in Sth Africa 1861 and controlled large areas. To my knowledge the British went to war in order to establish dominance of the region in 1880. A full 16 years after the first Spring turn takes place in this variant. I'm not really sure what your objection is, a good many Australians went and fought and died for the 'British' cause in SthAfrica, and again I don't see what you see as being a-historical in this variant.

---
The First Anglo-Boer War (1880–1881), was a rebellion of Boers (farmers) against British rule in the Transvaal that re-established their independence.

1877 annexation

The southern part of the African continent was dominated in the 19th century by a set of epic struggles to create within it a single unified state. British expansion into southern Africa was fueled by three prime factors: first, the desire to control the trade routes to India that passed around the Cape; second, the discovery in 1868 of huge mineral deposits of diamonds around Kimberley on the joint borders of the South African Republic (called the Transvaal by the British), Orange Free State and the Cape Colony, and thereafter in 1886 in the Transvaal of a major gold find, all of which offered enormous wealth and power; and thirdly the race against other European colonial powers, as part of a general colonial expansion in Africa. Other potential colonisers included Portugal, who already controlled West (modern day Angola) and East Africa (modern day Mozambique), Germany (modern day Namibia), and further north, Belgium (modern day Democratic Republic of the Congo) and France (West and Equatorial Africa, and Madagascar).

The British attempts in 1880 to annex the Transvaal were their biggest incursions into southern Africa, but there were others. In 1868, the British annexed Basutoland in the Drakensberg Mountains (modern Lesotho, surrounded by the Orange Free State and Natal) following an appeal from Moshesh, the leader of a mixed group of African refugees from the Zulu wars, who sought British protection against both the Boers and the Zulus. In the 1880s, Bechuanaland (modern Botswana, located north of the Orange River) became an object of dispute between the Germans to the west, the Boers to the east, and the British in the Cape Colony to the south. Although Bechuanaland had almost no economic value, the "Missionaries Road" passed through it toward territory farther north. After the Germans annexed Damaraland and Namaqualand (modern Namibia) in 1884, the British annexed Bechuanaland in 1885.

After the Battle of Blaauwberg Britain had acquired the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa from the Dutch in 1815 during the Napoleonic Wars. Certain groups of Dutch-speaking settler farmers ("Boers") resented British rule, even though British control brought some economic benefits. There were successive waves of migrations of Boer farmers (known as Trekboers which literally means "moving farmers"), first east along the coast away from the Cape toward Natal, and thereafter north toward the interior, eventually establishing the republics that came to be known as the Orange Free State and the Transvaal (literally "across/beyond the Vaal River).

The British did not try to stop Trekboers from moving away from the Cape. The Trekboers served as pioneers, opening up the interior for those who followed, and the British gradually extended their control away from the Cape along the coast toward the east, eventually annexing Natal in 1845. Indeed, the British subsequently ratified the two new Republics in a pair of treaties: the Sand River Convention of 1852 which recognised the independence of the Transvaal Republic, and the Bloemfontein Convention of 1854 which recognised the independence of the Orange Free State. However, British colonial expansion was, from the 1830s, marked by skirmishes and wars against both Boers and native African tribes for most of the remainder of the century.

The discovery of diamonds in 1867 near the Vaal River, some 550 miles (890 km) northeast of Cape Town, ended the isolation of the Boers in the interior and changed South African history. The discovery triggered a "diamond rush" that attracted people from all over the world, turning Kimberley into a town of 50,000 within five years and drawing the attention of British imperial interests. In the 1870s, the British annexed West Griqualand, site of the Kimberley diamond discoveries.

In 1875 Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli's Colonial Secretary, Lord Carnarvon, in an attempt to extend British influence, approached the Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic and tried to organise a federation of the British and Boer territories to be modelled after the 1867 federation of French and English provinces of Canada, however the Boer leaders turned him down. The successive British annexations, and in particular the annexation of West Griqualand, caused a climate of simmering unease for the Boer republics.
Adding to kaner's earlier comments re: Queensland and New South Wales as British colonies, I can see that while correct they haven't been included probably more for a balance perspective. Technically while Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 and had probably a whole 20,000 people at the time, the SC should in fact be given more to New South Wales and Victoria, rather than WA as they were by far the most populous centres (still are although Queensland is rapidly catching up.)

While on historical accuracy New Zealand should also be British as the Treaty of Waitangi gave the English full control over NZ in 1840.

Thoughts on the balance of the map?
There are 3 big powers, 4 medium, and 6 small ones. Isn't there something resembling to Rinascimento (or even Fubar, if 2 big powers get allied)?

1066 V2.0 Test Games
As you may or may not know, some time ago, myself, butterhead, fasces, and gobbledook ran some test games on the 1066 map to help determine strategies for the map. These were rather helpful (to me at least) and I'm looking for some brave souls to help out on some more, since we have a new version of the map.
