The End Of The World Diplomacy IX (LIVE)
So, in honor of the Mayan Apocalypse, I want to start a World Diplomacy IX live game on here. Is anyone interested, and what's a good time for you? I want to have it on the 21st, or the night before, spilling over into the early morning hours.

Taking over some Imperial Diplomacy II games?
After joining a few Imperial Diplomacy II games, I found out I didn't like the variant and I didn't have enough time for the games. I don't want to make the game unenjoyable for others, and I don't want to NMR, but I'm afraid I might have to if my life stays busy. If anyone wants to take over one or two Imperial Diplomacy games with all-right positions, please PM me and I'll tell you the details.

WWIV Team Game!!!
Hey, id like to start a team game, but only if there is an alternative to the three person team. Would anyone like to share insight on how to get it started? Would anyone like to commit to a game (regardless of whether or not you have a teammate in mind)??

Imperial Dip II(new map) suggestion
Wasnt sure where else to post this, but on the WWIV map, when submitting orders, it's been invaluable that when lands are noted at only initials even on the blown up map, that the initials are also in parantheses when you're submitting orders, it's very confusing right now in some select regions

suggestion in order to reduce misorders
I don't want to annoy you with a discussion about the issues from misorders.
Simply they usually happen. Expecially when you have to handle a large number of units and you're not familiar with the regions' names. It's not unusual to make mistakes with all those large map variants.

"A point and click interactive map", on the FAQs...
perhaps it has been discussed in the past.
When I was learning this game, I used to check the adjudications with this free software
http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/
It was simple, fast and intuitive. but it's something completely different from this website's procedure: it's not my intention to propose a hard-to-implement revolution.

My idea is to make use of something that already exists on the website in order to reduce the cheking operation time:
I'd propose to add one map to the "large map" link showing the set of orders submitted during the ongoing season. This way the orders check would be easier and faster, being it represented only by colored arrows in the map and not by a texted list referring to names on the map.
If something is wrong in the orders list it would be immediately detected.

Thoughts?
Fortress Doerr (978 D)

I use this when I go to playdip, I misorder more there than here.

Map idea
Fortress Doerr (978 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
but that is my thinking. I find point and click very annoying. And if you can't look up a territory's name, you really shouldn't be playing DIplomacy (where you have to study the board)
bo_sox48 (937 D)

I agree with noob ^

A interactive map should be easy to do if you know JavaScript. Unfortunatelly my JavaScript knowledge is very limited.

My mis-orders usually occur when I am using a i-phone or kindle fire to enter my moves. I think a point and click interface might make it worse on these platforms. However, if you are simply suggesting a visual map showing the orders already submitted, that would be nice.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
Yes, actually I am not asking for an interactive map, I'm asking for a further "large map" to check the current order list, no changes in the order submitting procedure:
for example currently if we're in the fall 1907 season and I click on the "large map" link I can see a map showing my and my opponents' moves and retreats done in spring 1907.
Now the "large map" shows what's just happened.
Well, ok, I'm proposing a "current" large map (not interactive, not point and click) showing what I am going to do: only my fall 1907 orders submitted.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
13 Nov 12 UTC
I agree with FD, I also find point and click very annoying.
But how about a non-interactive map? A map where, if you like, you can just check whether you actually entered the red/yellow/green arrows you were figuring out?
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
Just to be clear, It will be almost useless for a 1066 variant, but you may save both time and integrity of your orders list for a World War IV map.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Ah, so it would be non-interactive, or "visual" like Devo just said. Ok then, I like it.

I believe it could be done in 2 ways.
1- Now the first large map uselessly shows empty positions. IE, Spring 1901:
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/map.php?gameID=10851&turn=-1&mapType=large
while Spring 1901 moves are actually on the second large map.
If it would be possible to "shift" all turns so that Spring 1901's large map showed Spring 1901 moves & retreats, Fall 1901 showed Fall 1901 moves retreats and builds... and so on... then the last current map would be void and avaliable to show the current moves you saved.
2- Add a button that opens such a large map.

Thoughts anyone?
Oli?

And this shouldn't be too hard to implement. Maybe if I have some time I can give it a try...
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Did a small test.
You can see the result if you add &preview to a maplink in one of your games.
It displays the Orders saved on the server at the moment...
Any opinions?

Any idea for an icon (like the hide/show-moves) icon.?
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
naturally, a small icon next to the order list would make this "&preview" feature at hand.
"This button will open a large map showing your next orders list. It is suggested to use it to check the orders when you have a huge number of units"... or something similar as the link description
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
13 Nov 12 UTC
I think this should work like the show/hide button (replacing the small map with the preview) and the target of the large map-link.
bozo (2302 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
A very nice feature for final check of moves.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Fantastic...
How about the icon being just a P into a square?
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
P ?
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
13 Nov 12 UTC
yup! the letter P for Preview :)
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
Well, in my mind, this feature is supposed to help when you have about 10+ units, but I imagine that I (as player) would really appreciate it when I have to check 30 or 40 or even more orders.
For this reason I assume that this feature is more useful when the colored arrows are well discernible... on a new window large map.
On the other hand, I'd prefer to have the visual check on the game page as Oli suggested, so that I don't need to switch pages if something needs to be fixed in the orders list.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
Anyway, before making a new "P" link executable we'd better hear some opinions from players used to deal with large maps, namely WWIV, Haven, KW901 and so on.
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))
13 Nov 12 UTC
I'm reasonably used to Haven, and a misorder has cost me a stalemate position on that before. I reckon this would be very useful - also on fast-paced 1v1s as that's probably the variant group with the most misorders, and this would be a fast way of double checking orders for that too.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Working with the smallmap it would be nice if this could autoupdate as you enter orders...
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

Added a (not working) image to the board.
May opinions on that? If you have some time you can post an idea on the dev-forum: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/
or send per mail on the admin/mod email-address.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Or we could add a "Save and check" at the bottom of the orders.
Eg. "Save" "Save and check" "Ready"
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
13 Nov 12 UTC
For a first prototype the new icon works now.
You might need to reload the board-page a few times to clear the old javascript-code from your browsercache.
Improvements/Ideas always welcome.
bozo (2302 D)
14 Nov 12 UTC
Very nice, it looks like it is working well.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
14 Nov 12 UTC
Fantastic...this is very useful: thanks Oli & thanks Decima Legio!
Also, the dark-grey arrows showing the "missing move" of a support move are just... essential! :)

Minor issues:
1- I noticed it doesn't work on retreats/builds phases, it shows a "blank" map with no units on it. Wouldn't it be better to have it disabled then? And with a completely light-grey icon showing that this feature is disabled (Obviousely, it could be even better having it working, showing retreats/builds you saved, but IDK how much this would be useful).
2- Found the misorder, saved the right one, re-click on the icon and... nothing changes: it still shows the old misorder. You have to refresh the whole page to get the new preview: is there a way to avoid this?

Thanks again!

As you may or may not know, some time ago, myself, butterhead, fasces, and gobbledook ran some test games on the 1066 map to help determine strategies for the map.
