It's a surprisingly difficult question. I don't think the ranking is the best way to do it, but it seems to be the only one?

But I agree with the principle - V points are flawed. I doubt I'm a bigger hitter than Amby, for example.

Since you asked me in another thread Ambassador, sure I'd be up for it. Also G-Man does a similar type of thing for a series of games, if you want some influence

Ok, sounds like we're getting a number of great players really keen. I'm happy to keep things open to see if other big hitters are interested. Would be amazing to have a big map (if we had enough big hitters) as for sure whoever does best will rocket to no. 1 in the vDip rankings (if you care about these things... looking at your kaner)

I’d love to play if I qualify, though there are a few maps I’d pass on. I’d also request at least 2 days for phase length.

The Cloak & Dagger series you refer to Orange is a bit different. We try to foster a group of higher ranking players on the site by inviting players in that group before others. So we have had many of the higher ranked players on the site play in that series. But when we play larger games, others make it in too. Then, once you’re in the series, players from the most recent game, and active players from past games, have top priority on invites into the next game.

Just had my ten year anniversary on this site.. But don't consider myself a BIG hitter or GREAT player.. But I do know I'm reliable. Not in the top 50 though, so it would have to be a pretty big game to get an invite.

OK, we're starting to get some momentum. Personally I'm thinking 48 hour turns. Interested in views on gunboat or normal press. Ideally it'd be great to get numbers up to a Europa Renovatio/WWIV level, but keen for thoughts on larger reasonably balanced maps if we fall short of approx 35 players.

This is a website and community gathered under a banner called "Diplomacy". The other game that I call "Tactics" that some misguided souls proclaim as a variation is but an abomination and scourge....perhaps meriting its own dedicated website and community to properly isolate and quarantine its perverse adherents. :oP

Split the difference and do Public Press? ...I like PP, but for some reason everyone seems to hate it after about 20-25 turns.

I am interested in a normal press, anon EU/WWIV if I make the big hitters cut. As per Taishi Ci's comment, I am on the everyone-else side --- Public Press is just the worst. But maybe that is the joy of it for some people. I see it as the old saying "better to keep quiet and let people think you are stupid rather than speak out and remove all doubt." In public press, I can go from hero to zero with the whole crowd in a matter of one sentence.

I’m in for diplomacy and almost all large variants, out for gunboat and public press. Just my prefs, so if the majority dies want to go in one of those directions, I respect that.

A big hitters diplomacy game with gunboat rules would be a paradox at best. Maybe use the original press rules (no communication during retreats and builds)?

Original press rules works because retreats and builds are allotted like, 1/3 (or less) of the time of an actual turn.
Where turns are locked to the same length (outside of 'ready'), not being able to talk for 3/5 of the game just saps engagement.

I'd definitely be more inclined to put my name down for Gunboat than full press (I am one of those perverse 'Tactics' enjoyers gopher describes), but do agree that it's not really appropriate for a 'big hitters' game.

I actually like public press! But I could do full press/rulebook press.

I'm not too sure about playing one of the very large variants, though.

@mouse: the agreement for rulebook press should be for everyone to ready up asap, to not drag out the game.

If I may, I would vote for rulebook press. Some of us get a little busy and not having to talk during build/retreat phases is nice. A good compromise between gunboat and full I think

Hmm, I'm a maybe if it's rulebook and a turn phase of at least 2-days, having said that I'd suggest that a gentleman's agreement is made to ready retreats/disbands and builds asap.

I'm onboard with that. I always like it when a turn processes quickly.

Yeah, I'm on board with quick processing. I'd prefer not to have phases longer than 2 days if possible - I'm too impatient and I lose interest easily with longer phases.

Sounds good, but I can see issues with ready up, i.e., someone’s just late and would NMR if the move processed, but instead goes to the deadline and oriole get upset. Or someone just takes longer than others would like, or forgets. Too bad we can’t just set 24 hrs for retreats and builds.
