So it seems austria has a horrible advantage over the other two in this variant, how and ever, FG can easily work together, right?

3 Day Phase Honesty
Any interest in an honesty game with three day phases? The map would be open for discussion, and I could go either way on anonymous. I for one would be in, so:

Backseat Driver Game
I read about a variant entitled Backseat Driver (link to rules inside) and was wondering if anyone would like to play it with modified rules.

http://www.diplom.org/Zine/S1995R/Szykman/Backseat.html
Basically, each power has a player who decides what to do and is advised by one or more advisors. I suggest that each player has a specific team of advisors who would give them advice. The players cannot communicate with each other but can only see press. So, the game would be a gunboat game but the advisors would discuss through whatever means they wanted (possibly a paused full-press game) and would give advice to their player. The player can choose whether or not to listen to their advice.
Does anyone have any ideas for modifications to the rules or is anyone interested in playing?

I am currently involved in the School of War on Webdiplomacy, it is the same concept, player, advisors giving advice. im not sure what modifications would be needed, and i feel that a new game mode for this would be a waste of the programmers (precious) time.
A semi related idea would be to have a game in which 2 people controlled each power so that they could collaborate ideas and such. it would be a quicker phase time seeing how both players would be online at various times.
gman314 (1016 D)
22 Mar 11 UTC
I am also in the school of was and I think that this would be a bit of a different idea since the players could conduct no diplomacy of their own and, I forgot to add, can't actually talk to their advisors either. So, they are in a gunboat with an outside source of information. It wouldn't need to be a new game mode either. The players could be in a gunboat and the advisors could all be in another game to conduct their diplomacy there (knowing who represented which nation of course) and then would advise their player by PM.

*School of War not School of was.
gman314 (1016 D)

This would be different from the school of war because the school of war aims to help teach players while the backseat driver game is simply a different way of conducting diplomacy.
mongoose998 (1344 D)

oooooooh. I see. kind of. so basically it is one set of players pushing the buttons to put in orders, and another set to do all of the diplomacy and tell the origanal players what to do?
gman314 (1016 D)
22 Mar 11 UTC
Basically. However, the players pushing buttons can feel free to ignore their advisors completely. Now that I think about it, it would probably make the most sense to play the way it's suggested and let each advisor advise up to two players. Then there's motivation to not follow their advice because they could be advising you into a trap.

This looks interesting, and I'd like to be set as an adviser once you figure out exactly how it will work.
gman314 (1016 D)

Sure.
gman314 (1016 D)

So, I'd like to play as a player and we have tt612 as an advisor so far.

I think that the way we'll play it, we'll put all the players we get in one gunboat game and we'll stick all the advisors (we'll round off to enough players to fill some sort of board) into a non-anonymous full-press game. The advisors can play there if they like or they can just pause it because the main role of that game will be for the advisors to have a convenient place to make their discussions for the gunboat. The full-press game will have a long phase so that it doesn't finish before the other game. The advisors will then be able to advise up to two players in the gunboat game. They will have to announce who they're advising on the full-press Global chat once they've decided who they're advising and all advising announcements must be made before the end of the second year of the gunboat. The players will be able to read the advice but are not allowed to reply or ask questions. The winners will be the player who wins and the advisor(s) for the winning player. In a draw, the advisors to all drawing powers and the drawing players will count as winning.
We want at least half as many advisors as players.

Any interest or suggested changes to the rules?

is there a maximum amount of advisers one player can have?
also as in, how do we ensure every player gets an adviser?

@tt612: I think that the best way to do it would be for someone to assign a player for any advisor who is willing. Don't force them to advise people they don't want to but don't give them free reign to leave one player alone either. I think that each player can have as many advisors as are willing to advise them but no more than maybe 1/2 or 1/4 of the advisors can advise one player.
gigantor (937 D)
24 Mar 11 UTC
Alternatively, (if you do it with the same number of advisors as players) you could automatically assign the advisor to the same country he draws in the full-press game, and then let him choose one other country (whether you allow him to choose a neighborouring country is up to you). This way, every country has an advisor, but the advisors also have a bit of choice if they draw Italy >.>
tt612 (1404 D)
24 Mar 11 UTC
that might be more fair, and adds a random element to the game while still allowing them some favoritism.
i'll be a player i guess. looks like you need them
gman314 (1016 D)
25 Mar 11 UTC
I like gigantor's idea so we can go for that. Gigantor, do you want to play? We still need at least one more player and one more advisor but that would still be pretty lame. It would be good to go for at least 5 players.

Interesting Issue
Something has happened to this site on my computer. The font is smaller and different, and so is the in-game (not zoomed) map. there is no change to any other websites. I am currently in 4 or so Chaos games, could that cause the smaller font? I am in about 8 games total, if that matters
