New Variant: North Sea Wars
Hey everyone. I did some variants in the past and I had a new idea.
Wanted to make something a bit more balanced (see Fubar variant) and a bit faster (see Dutch Revolt). I do like wonky map designs and I will not dissapoint this time.
sqrg (1186 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC

The setting is the North Sea Area [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea] around the year 0 CE [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_age]

The parties involved are: Norse (purple), Frisian (green), Roman (Red) and Briton (Blue) tribes. I am not aiming for historical accuracy here and a 4 player map seemed like an interesting idea.

First take a look at the map design here: http://imagebin.org/202456

Note that I've written the starting units in the SC's (A for Army, F for Fleet).

The water (blue) areas that touch the left border of the map are not territories at all and can not be entered (like Switzerland). So the Wales territory is in fact landlocked, not a coast.

The circle territory in the center of the North Sea is a special one. It is linked with the circle area in the legend/title box in the topleft corner of the map. The center of the circle in the legend box is the exact same territory as the big circle territory in the center of the North Sea. So let us call this territory Central North Sea (CNS). Confused yet? Let me go on.
The Wood, Iron and Grain neutral SC territories can be moved to from CNS, but this is a one-way street! Units in one of the territories Wood, Iron or Grain can only move and support within those three territories and can't get out (untill they are destroyed). Once inside it works a bit like the pure diplomacy variant.

If you understood that explanation you realize it's actually really simple during gameplay. And i realize that once a player manages to get two fleets inside and own all three SC's (Wood, Iron and Grain) he has a great 3-for-2 deal, but think for a bit about how many turns that would take and how stupid the other three players have to be.

tldr; So why am I posting? I need your opinions about balance and gameplay before I develop any further. I wish it to be fast, but still some complicated situations. And please show me gamebreaking stalematelines!

Will the Norse always win if all players are bad fucking players? Not that I think this is a real balance issue.

looks like a fun map! i will try it out if you do it!!! Maybe you should add some more land though.......
sqrg (1186 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Thanks crixno, I had made a bigger map before this. But I think the most intesting diplomacy happens where players are just a little overcrowded. I love the Trieste/Venice area in classic dip. I want the whole game to feel like that.
gman314 (1016 D)
08 Mar 12 UTC
Neat idea. But regarding Fubar, what do you mean by "a bit more balanced"? That variant is not balanced at all!!!
sqrg (1186 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
I use "a bit" for humorous effect. The actual Idea behind Fubar is that it's not a gunboat game. It works fine with good diplomats and its fun!
Ninjanrd (1248 D)

May I ask why you don't simply put the wood/iron/grain on the actual map? Isn't that inset a little unnecessary?
Fozzy Brrr... (890 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
with so many rivers armies seem a bit pointless. Only the Britons seem to really desire one so they can reach Scotland. Maybe expand the map East a little bit, so an army could threaten the Norse without a convoy? It'd be a hike but at least the option is there.

Also why is there an inset? I agree with Ninja, plus why do you think it should be a dead end? Just a mechanic? I like the water SCs acting as trade, but I don't think they should be so sheltered, as who owns the seas owns the trade. Why should I be able to get 2 fleets up there and have my homeland taken, but still be dominant in the trade, and securing my survival of the game?
Ninjanrd (1248 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
^^Probably because the whole game is based off of a brutal slug fest for who controls the center.
Ninjanrd (1248 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
also, brilliant job, sqrg. I would play this with my friends. If you need help coding, you should talk to other creators of vDip variants. I really want to play this.

09 Mar 12 UTC
@Ninjanrd: Thanks when there is enough enthousiasm i will make it. About your question "May I ask why you don't simply put the wood/iron/grain on the actual map? Isn't that inset a little unnecessary?"
It would actually get pretty confusing that way, because you can not enter the Wood, Iron or Grain territories from any other place than CNS. It would look like they are accessable from all sides. On top of that they are kind of separate from the game. Maybe sort of like a minigame, a mini-pure-dipgame.
sqrg (1186 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
@Fozzy: yes as I said in my post it is possible to got two fleets in there and get the 3 SC's. Then you will have snugly secured your survival.
I don't really mind that. It gives players something to fight for and besides it will take a lot of time and no opposition (or a lot of help) to get to that situation.
"Why should I be able to get 2 fleets up there and have my homeland taken"
Yes you have secured survival, but you've lost your homeland. How will you build new units? If you drop your fleets in there early, but get attacked on your home turf you will not solo win easily!
sqrg (1186 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
Thanks for the comments guys. I did already change the map a little bit again, but I'm waiting for some experienced players to play out a few opening years in their head. Or look for some brutal stalemates that make the map no fun.
Let me know if you find any.
sqrg (1186 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
The Rivers don't let Fleets sail into the mainland. There are three landlocked territories in the bottom-right corner and another one is Wales.
Yes it has a lot of coastal territories, but so does classic diplomacy.

@Fozzy: I Actually really like your idea of expanding the map a little ot the east and I might do that.

Its really a epic map. I couldnt find any stalemates but i fear the will be often bounces in the first year in the north sea so one or two players will be able to slip with some luck into the woodirongrain-thing. So couldnt everybody have another fleet in a north sea territory like france has one more unit in hundred years war?

I like the idea. Would I play it? Likely, but there's so many other awesome maps that I haven't played yet. I'm trying to play a gunboat of every map. It's taking a while.
Ninjanrd (1248 D)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@sqrq I understand the CNS now, but I still don't like the inset. It's kind of like the underworld in the Haven variant. Maybe put the CNS as a ring around wood/iron/grain and an extra thick black line around them to signify the entrance but no exit.
sqrg (1186 D)

Why not make it passable?
:-)
butterhead (1272 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
I like the idea... only problem I can see is that Briton and Norse are the only ones guaranteed a first year build... Frisian can get bounced out of both neighboring centers by Romans, while Norse can support himself into Denmark and Briton into Scotland...which means that 2 of them are in a screwy spot, especially Frisian... not sure how you could fix it, but it is a possible issue that could occur...
sqrg (1186 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
@ King Atom: was that just a question, no follow-up?

@GOD: I've made it non-passable to force a player attacking the Britons to use armies instead of just fleets. It's going to be a fleet heavy map so it gives extra protection.
sqrg (1186 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
@Butterhead: Well spotted, that's the way i designed the whole. The Norse and Britons have a guaranteed neutral SC. The Romans and Frysians can choose to bounce eachother or (use their head and) avoid the screwyness by making a deal, wich is think dip is all about. The inspiration for this situation is from the starting position of Italy and Austra in classic diplomacy. The Frysians are more or less the central power, they compare to Austria.

Let me know if you think it's too 'tight' I can always make more room, but I think i like the way it forces the players to talk.

Thanks for the input. I will post a 'final' image when I get home. I've added territory names and some iron age flair, I'm sure you'll like it.

@crixno: I will post the smallmap.png and smallmapNames.png files too. These are the actual two files that the variant will use. I'm sure you've read about those in the wiki. For making your own variant i recommend just going ahead and designing a map firt. I use the GIMP for image manipulation. If you need very special rules implemented you should check with Oli first. Good luck

Expect less diplomacy from me if you're in a game with me
Sadly, I just got news that I won't be able to be on much. Over a month ago, I ordered a new PC from Dell because my old one was dying. I've spent the last month getting dicked around by Dell about when they're going to get the new one to me. Meanwile, the old one has finally finished dying. I can get on enough to do orders, but that's about it. Sorry.
