Stupid question
I just realized that Peter Finch is Australian. Has an Aussie ever won a Best Actor Oscar without being dead? Russell Crowe doesn't count he's a Kiwi.

Modern Diplomacy II map
There's a funny error on the large Modern Diplomacy II map. Bordeaux is called Bornholm, which is an island in the Baltic Sea. :-)

Maybe something to fix, Oli?

What is ugly?
I saw a reference to the Petrobras HQ as one of the 10 ugliest buildings on Earth. Some internet searching turned up such top 10 lists that frequently included the old LollyPop Building at 2 Columbus Circle, the Pompidou Centre and even the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Implementing the flying Dutchmen tactuc.
Flying Dutchman: The name was appropriated for the tactic of sneaking a counter onto the board when nobody's looking. It's generally considered legal so long as it's taken off when called on it (however, turns are not replayed if it's been making stuff happen).

Question about Rinascimento
I was wondering how many sc's it takes to actually win on that variant, at one point the rules say 33 but at another they say 30 plus the city of Roma

France has CDd and he's in a very good position (10SC). This could tear the game apart, and if someone could sit him, it'd be very nice.

Stats
Just looked at that awesome 'Stats' tab. Great job! I was wondering if it might be easier to convert the Variants tab into a similar drop down menu so you dont have to scroll for forever to find the map you are looking for.

You can just click on the map name at the top of the page.
raapers2 (1787 D)
01 Mar 11 UTC
Yes, if you are coming from the game page, but not if you are coming from the homepage or something else. For example, if someone asks a good question about some variant you have to either be currently playing on that map or have to scroll down for forever.

Ok... just a suggestion. Figured it would be as much of a space-saving feature as the stat page's menu.

I love the stat page...useful.

I try to avoind editing the main webdip code, so I don't have to take care of every single change once a new version is available. But I think the stats page could need some improvements. If I have some more time I'll take care of this.
just a funny observation: we need a lot of games to make the stats really valuable. out of curiosity I checked the stats of the Lepanto variant, 100% symmetric... if the stats were already significant, we should see more or less 50-50 of solos.. instead.. check yourself ;P
I'm not against the stats page, which is absolutely lovely, I just want to ask everybody to play more!! lol
and I invite the players of the HolyLeague to behave better! come on!

maybe playing red gives some kind of advantage.

Stats are great and fun, but I wouldn't base a strategy on them. Any country can win in any kind of map.
true.. imho the stats are more useful for checking whether some variants are too biased in favor of a player, and eventually correcting the issue
alokomot (1280 D X)
02 Mar 11 UTC
I think most variants are pretty fair for everyone. It's a matter of adopting the correct strategy. For example everyone seems to think that Germany vs Russia is biased in favor of Russia, and the stats say so as well. But I have played as both Germany and Russia and think it is pretty even. The thing is that Germany needs to blitz Russia from year 1 to stand a chance.

The ones that are probably more screwed up are Turkey and France in Rinascimento. They depend on the pity of the rest of the players to stand a chance. Turkey is successful only when Napoli cds or misses some phases and France the same with Savoia.
@ alokomot: I agree about French, but not about Turkish: they can do well, specially if they form an anti-Napoli alliance, even if Napoli plays the game.
alokomot (1280 D X)
03 Mar 11 UTC
Maybe if it is not a good player, but a well played Napoli has a huge advantage over Turkey and can eliminate any Turkish threat in the first two or three years even if Venice and Stato decide to ally with Turkey. (For Venice it makes sense, but for Stato it doesn't so it probably won't happen.)

speaking of Rinascimento, I was wondering why france did not get a special home sc like spain did in dutch revolt
butterhead (1272 D)
04 Mar 11 UTC
I think that France should have one supply center atleast, that they don't have to use support to get. that way, after year one, they can have that one PLUS the one with the Neutral in it(whatever the name is).

i mena im just saying that France has always been a major player in Europe, or at least it has for a long time, and if i was the king of france I wouldnt just send two armies and if the don't conquer something in one year give up
