Stupid question
I just realized that Peter Finch is Australian. Has an Aussie ever won a Best Actor Oscar without being dead? Russell Crowe doesn't count he's a Kiwi.

Modern Diplomacy II map
There's a funny error on the large Modern Diplomacy II map. Bordeaux is called Bornholm, which is an island in the Baltic Sea. :-)

Maybe something to fix, Oli?

What is ugly?
I saw a reference to the Petrobras HQ as one of the 10 ugliest buildings on Earth. Some internet searching turned up such top 10 lists that frequently included the old LollyPop Building at 2 Columbus Circle, the Pompidou Centre and even the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Implementing the flying Dutchmen tactuc.
Flying Dutchman: The name was appropriated for the tactic of sneaking a counter onto the board when nobody's looking. It's generally considered legal so long as it's taken off when called on it (however, turns are not replayed if it's been making stuff happen).

Question about Rinascimento
I was wondering how many sc's it takes to actually win on that variant, at one point the rules say 33 but at another they say 30 plus the city of Roma

France has CDd and he's in a very good position (10SC). This could tear the game apart, and if someone could sit him, it'd be very nice.

Question about The economic map
Is the economy wrapped?
fasces349 (1007 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
Also another question.

There are 62 sc on the map, and you only need 24 to win. What if two people hit 24 sc on the same turn?
tt612 (1404 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
then we finally get an answer for the similar WWIV scenarios we've been asking about for the last week.
no, it's not wrapped.
good question about the 24 SCs... I'll test it in the lab and I'll let you know...
just out of curiosity since it'll never happen :)
fasces349 (1007 D)
26 Feb 11 UTC
It could happen.
I 17-17 draw about 20% of my games. On this map that would be kinda lke 24-24
fasces349 (1007 D)

still waiting apon my answer...
sorry, I should have updated you.
I tested that situation in the webDiplomacy LAB, and one of the two powers won! the other one simply survived.. without any apparent logic!
Oli and I (and the webDip community) are currently trying to find a solution..
I'm personally convinced that such a situation will happen only if two players plan it in advance, so I strongly advise you to avoid it...
the possible studied options in case of 24-24 are:
- the victory is assigned to the power which owns at least 24 SCs, AND the relative majority of the SCs
- the victory is assigned to the power which has the better 'SC history', checking the SCs owned in the turns before the last one

Hey I gotta hijack this thread for a moment. did anyone notice that the Variant page says there are 24 in the Economic Panel, when there are really 28??
ups my bad - thank you for reporting!

"the victory is assigned to the power which has the better 'SC history', checking the SCs owned in the turns before the last one"

And what if that to is a draw?

The desired outcome for 2 powers crossing 24 on the same turn is to make it so they share a 2-way draw.
butterhead (1272 D)
04 Mar 11 UTC
easiest solution... first to 32 wins...
yes but I wanted to see a 'fast game', where everybody needs to be quick..
frnakly speaking, I think that if two players want to play some tricks, they'll find a way to do it anyway. fasces349, true, the players can agree and play the whole game trying to have the same number of SCs every year.. but what's the point?
c'mon this is Diplomacy, let's play Diplomacy and don't get us mad trying to find strange outcomes!
play it straight, and you'll never see a 3-5-6-8-11-13-15-16-18-20-21-24 vs 3-5-6-8-11-13-15-16-18-20-21-24 draw! come on guys, what's the point?

Can the game continue until someone has more SC's?
Or, can it be a draw with the two players and everyone else get a survive?
fasces349 (1007 D)
04 Mar 11 UTC
2 way draws is the desired out come for the way I play. I don't want the rule the world, I only want to rule half of it. But given that you only need 24 sc in this one, I am starting to consider ruling 1/3 of the world to be more feasible. However the problem with that is I only get double to points that I started with :(
fasces349 (1007 D)
04 Mar 11 UTC
However in my current game, which will hopefully end in a 2-way draw, I am placed at a disadvantage in that draw because my ally has 8 right now and I have 6.

I like and support both of Devonians suggestions

a 2-way draw + survives is not possible.
It's draw for everybody or 1 won + survives. I can't change that programming-logic that easy.
fasces349 (1007 D)
05 Mar 11 UTC
yet two people who tied in sc, one gets a win, one gets a survive, it seems a little unfair.
guak (1262 D X)

Simple solution, play for the win or for a three-way draw...
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
06 Mar 11 UTC
We have 2 options at the moment:
- New winning condition: Winner needs the target SC-count + the majority of SC's
Problem: The game could last much longer.
or:
- If two or more players reach the target SC-count the same time, check their backlog (Player with the most SC's during all turns win)
Problem: In very rare occasions we could have the same problem like before (2 players with a perfect match)
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
06 Mar 11 UTC
@faces: If your ally has 8 and you have 6 SC a draw is heavy in _your_ favor...

Just looked at that awesome 'Stats' tab. Great job! I was wondering if it might be easier to convert the Variants tab into a similar drop down menu so you dont have to scroll for forever to find the map you are looking for.
