Stupid question
I just realized that Peter Finch is Australian. Has an Aussie ever won a Best Actor Oscar without being dead? Russell Crowe doesn't count he's a Kiwi.

Modern Diplomacy II map
There's a funny error on the large Modern Diplomacy II map. Bordeaux is called Bornholm, which is an island in the Baltic Sea. :-)

Maybe something to fix, Oli?

What is ugly?
I saw a reference to the Petrobras HQ as one of the 10 ugliest buildings on Earth. Some internet searching turned up such top 10 lists that frequently included the old LollyPop Building at 2 Columbus Circle, the Pompidou Centre and even the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Implementing the flying Dutchmen tactuc.
Flying Dutchman: The name was appropriated for the tactic of sneaking a counter onto the board when nobody's looking. It's generally considered legal so long as it's taken off when called on it (however, turns are not replayed if it's been making stuff happen).

That is a clip from a site about the rules of diplomacy. I was wondering if we could find a way to sneak this into an online site.
I don''t think so,, but you have a typo in your title.. :D

damn. it would be interesting to see if we could get this rule, along with the espionage rules in an online game.
Graeme01 (1224 D)

Yeah, like in the rules of diplomacy it actually encourages spying and listening in on diplomatic conversations, but that would be so hard to implement... I love the idea of the flying dutchman rule though! :D
Mythos (1271 D)

I don't like the idea simply because people would either spam the command to place an illegal unit or spam the command to report one 'just in case'.

It wouldn't really work so well.
a good implementation could be to allow each player to see in advance the moves of another.
this way, he can decide to spread what he saw to other players.. keep it for himself.. or spreading wrong information around the board
RoxArt (1732 D)

and who can see moves in advance? just a random (really lucky) player? :/
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

The outcome would be that no-one would finalize his orders. Many players would change their orders a few minutes before the deadline so that the informations sent by the "observer" would be totally unreliable. Both because the observer could lie and because those informations, even true, could suddenly become oudated 1 minute before the deadline.
Aberacht (1287 D)

These kind of tactics (overhearing, spying, board manipulation) can only practically work in face-to-face diplomacy, I'm afraid.
@ RoxArt: every player can see another player, of course.
@ Guaroz: we can force the orders not to be changeable.. the problem remains though.. uhm let me think ab out it
@ Aberacht: never say never

If nessacary, we could make a highly over-complicated game where u can choose to "spy" on 2 players (alternating every year) and random bits and pieces (syllables, not words) will appear in your chatbox from The first of the two players. then you cud whip it out in global with a mity accusation: "England just said 'ar ee op" to Russia! BLASPHEMY!" or something
fasces349 (1007 D)

I think a spying rule could be in order
Where your spy could detect any message between Country A and Country B in a certain quarter of a turn.

You decide which quarter of the turn, and which two countries and you automatically get to see them.
Onar (833 D)

reminds me of an idea I had, regarding making the online experience more similar to a FTF game. in the global chat, have a little message pop up every time someone messages someone else. i.e: 'MESSAGE SENT FROM FRANCE TO GERMANY 2:27 AM' it wouldn't reveal the contents, just the fact that a message was sent.
Aberacht +1. I like the ideas, and maybe I'm just not as creative as I need to be, but I just don't see how some of these can be incorporated. (Mythos +1 as well, that was my first thought.)
fasces349 (1007 D)

I like Onars idea, and yeah, we need to look into idea for something like this to work. (just because we can't think of one doesn't mean its not there)

I guess its the advantage of playing in person. The advantage of playing online is that your not stuck playing the same 4 players over and over again 40 times in a row over the last 2 years.

Just looked at that awesome 'Stats' tab. Great job! I was wondering if it might be easier to convert the Variants tab into a similar drop down menu so you dont have to scroll for forever to find the map you are looking for.
