Competitive Dip
On a suggestion from PE, I am interested in finding those people on this site who like to play competitive Diplomacy - the way it was first created. No pre-arranged draws, no unbreakable alliances...play to win, just like the objective says.

So, who's interested?

I have a few games about to draw so I have more points coming soon but I can play now for a low bet.

The bet is going to be as low as possible. These games aren't about points. Its about playing a good, quality game of dip.

Mapu makes 7, I'm going to give this another day or so to see if we get > 7, otherwise we'll start up a classic match!
100% agree re: points. Wish we could have 0-pt bets.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

Just as suggestion drano, but I think it would be best to start of with standard 7 player Diplomacy, and if we have 8, 9, or 10 players consider running multiple games. It seems like in 10-14 days we have enough players to fill up a second game, and I am willing to wait or play in both as necessary. My objection is that the eight player maps are rather poorly designed, specifically the Africa map. No offense meant personally to the designer, but the map is full of choke points and is conducive to the very style of play that we are trying to avoid. Then again if you guys want to play Africa, I can step aside for a game. That's just not my cup of tea.
I'll join if there is room. I've been holding back 'cause I'm pretty busy for a few weeks more, but this looks too good to pass up. If there's no more room right now, I hope this will be ongoing with more games to come.

I play if you want to move up to a nine or ten player variant or want to run another classic

I think I'll take ruffhaus's advice and play at least 1 classic. It IS classic after all. So for those in classic, phase length preferences?

In addition, I think 2 at a time is manageable, sobim open to another one:

Game 2:
Drano

Who else?
re: Classic, probably 2 D phases here. Can go as short as 1 D phase, as long as 3 D

re: Game 2, I will probably not participate; I'm in another game at the moment which, though less competitive, still requires my attention, and I'm also picking up the Mafia hobby again after a 3-year hiatus.

I agree with the standard map .
I vote 1 to 2 day phases, 36 hour is ideal.

Thanks for then input cypeg and Dr recommended, but I was asking those people who are in thrbclassic game only :/
Mapu (2086 D (B))

I vote 1 to 2 day phases, 36 hour is ideal.

And I would play in a 2nd one too.
Jimbozig (1179 D)
31 May 13 UTC
I can play 1 day phases but would prefer 36 hours. There are days/weekends when I can only really play via phone which makes things tougher.

I would say we should agree to commit to readying builds/retreats. Although, I am not sure that this commitment really "works."

Alternatively, if we do 24 hours I may ask for the odd extend, which is nice about his website.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
31 May 13 UTC
36 hours works for me too. That makes 3 of us. I'm betting 36 will be the pick. I'll create the game early tomorrow most likely once I receive confirmation.

Game 2:
Drano
Mapu
Shep315 (1435 D)
31 May 13 UTC
I'll play in the second one and I also vote for 36 hour phases, if nothing at all I've gained an appreciation for longer negotiation time :) I also support readying for builds and retreats.
36h is fine by me, fwiw. 48h is still my ideal but 36h will work well too

I´m in.

Game 2:
Drano
Mapu
Shep
Gumers

Game 1 will be created shortly and PMs sent to those who are to be in it.

As an aside, please remember that these games are being played for competitiveness. This means that we should all be playing for the win. In these games, there should be no consideration given to points, HoF, or any other outside factors (grudges, etc.). If you don't wish to play this way, please let us know now, instead of during the game.

Thanks to all who are participating!

I'll toss you in for now Ruffhaus:

Game 2:
Drano
Mapu

Gumers
Ruffhaus
G-Man (since this game is aimed for a larger group, I"m sure he'll want in)
DEFIANT (1311 D)

I'm sure you're joking cypeg, but in case you aren't, yes, no grudges. These series of games are meant to show people just how much fun a true game of competitive Diplomacy can be. I hope that everyone here will go forth and set up their own competitive Dip games and that it spreads around the site.

Please, new request : units sorted by alphabetical order on the orders sheet.
I am playing my first Modern Diplomacy II game and I have had the HUGE pleasure to notice that my units are sorted by alphabetical order on the orders sheet !

It is so much easier and clearer to find my units that way ! Would it please be possible that units are sorted by alphabetical order on the orders sheet in every variant ?

I've got 2 games on the go that I'd rather not CD - a WWII gunboat most importantly, and a Europe 1939 full press game. I'm away from the 30th to the 10th of June, so would somebody mind taking over for that period?

Feature Suggestion: Delayed Vote Notification?
In the age of the mobile smart phone, it is quite common for people to accidentally hit a button they don't mean to, which usually breaks up the global chat and causes an extra envelope to show up for every player in the game.

I tried to install the webserver on a local server for testing purposes and ran into some problems:
1) the documentations do not seem to match the downloaded folder
2) it seems like there are .sql files missing
3) when installing all .sql-files manually (in order) the webserver gives the following error message: "Error triggered: Unknown column 'u.showCountryNamesMap' in 'field list'."

Appears to be a problem in the coding of the Youngstown World War II map
I'm currently playing Italy in a Youngstown World War II map, and I've run into a problem. The supply zone of Tirane is very obviously drawn so that it's adjacent to the Ionian Sea, but the game will not let me order a movement from the Ionian into Tirane.

I've got exams this week so could a kind soul please, please sit for me until Saturday. I'm only in two games so it shouldn't be too much of a burden. I'm trying to get an extend for the WWIV team game I am in, though, so I'm not sure if I need sitting for that yet.

Tell me about your life!
Greetings to all the men and women of VDip! I had an idea that I think will help us grow as a community, and get to know each other better. I'd like to know more about you! Feel free to give as much, or as little, detail as you wish. things you can include would be your birthday, age, location, career/schooling, etc. etc. This will help us bond with each other, as well as get some good stats on the demographics on the site!
