Stats bug?
Was just looking at my stats, and my “all games” show 30 total games played, but the “variants” stats show 33. Any ideas on why this is?

someone told me that the Israeli singer was all over their feeds, otherwise I haven't really heard much about it - will there be both Russia and Ukraine playing?

How can you have Eurovision without Ukraine?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfjHJneVonE

To me, as an American, this is what Eurovison is.

what a performance, although the part in 02:30 did not age well

to me, Eurovision will always be the Epic Sax guy

SNL did it first...I mean that homeless man seems vaguely Romanian. No?

Russia and Belarus have been suspended for the time being from participating xD
Why is Australia in Eurovision?
As an Australian I have no idea either. Seems stupid.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
13 May 23 UTC
It is clearly all part of a German, neo-Hapsburgian conspiracy to eventually create a world dominating, universal monarchy under the EU by trying to slowly expand the definition of Euro-ness.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

Be on guard, Australians, against this pernicious neo-colonialism masquerading in the guise of trashy dance music.

GOD: Wow, I had no idea that the epic sax guy was from a Eurovision song!

gopher27: SNL video "Aired 01/30/10". The Eurovision song competed in the 2010 contest, but may have been recorded in 2009. Suspicious timing! Who copied who?
JECE (1534 D)

According to an uncited claim on Wikipedia, "The inspiration for the 'Epic Jazz Jive' came from observing ducks, waddling through sand, on the beach." Too funny, ha ha!

And apparently epic sax guy is Transnistrian!?!
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

So who ended up winning?
@GOD, how do you think Epic Sex Guy compared to Sexy Sax Man?

Sweden won.... Finland got second place. This was the most controversial Eurovision in history
AJManso4 (2226 D)
15 May 23 UTC
Sweden won the jury as 1st place with 340 points from the jury... Finland got 4th place by the Jury with 150 points.

Then from the actual people, Finland won the televote with the biggest landslide in history, getting 376 points from the televote. Sweden got 2nd place with televote and got 243 points.

The people clearly wanted Finland to win, but the Jury decided the outcome.
AJManso4 (2226 D)
15 May 23 UTC
Final results:
Sweden - 583 points
Finland - 536 points
AJManso4 (2226 D)

3rd place was Israel with a total of 362 points lol

Since the political situation in Europe always influences the outcome of the contest: was the strong popular support for Sweden and Finland a show of support for them joining NATO?
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
15 May 23 UTC
Wow....that Finland performance was trash. Those background dancers would frighten small children.

I just finished watching video of the performance, and I cannot remember anything about the song to even comment upon beyond the Yue Minjun aesthetic.
AJManso4 (2226 D)

Nah both Finland and Sweden had the best songs of esc 2023, nothing involving NATO tbh

But, Ukraine got a lot more points than expected lol

If that was the second best entry, what was the garbage like? Someone playing chopsticks on a synthesizer while interpretive dancers did an homage to Jeff Koons?

What the world has to laugh when Germany starts with something unspeakable as seen? And deservedly last, where everyone shows their national flag, we show the rainbow flag. If, as a German, I'm asked abroad whether I'm from Germany, I just want to shake my head and pretend to be Austrian or Swiss. My God, this land is Sodom and Gomorrah, but the other two aren't much better. Conchita Wurst! Germany should be excluded, but then who will pay for this event?

@Model...Didn't Austria send a bearded lady as their entry not too long ago? If you are genuinely offended, then learn from the Israelis: have a bunch of kids, and the cultural counter-revolution will take about two generations. Maybe less given mainstream German birthrates. The Muslims will likely join you. But then again, you probably aren't really that offended, not enough to do anything in response beyond commenting to strangers in other countries on the internet.

Model - nah, Germany came last because a) Germany (politics of eurovision means the juries never give them (m)any points) and b) most people who like heavier stuff went for Käärijä instead (Australia had the same problem, imo) since Finland had a much better chance of winning.

Also, Lord of the Lost is great (though I will admit I prefer their gothic and industrial stuff over this glam phase).

God help me, a positive word about Fox News
The Wall Street Journal published an article over the weekend that mentioned in passing the fact that Epstein changed his will shortly before dying to list Bill Gates's personal "Science Advisor" (presumably Myhrvold's replacement) as the executor of his will. This was news to me, and Google indicates that Fox News was the only major American media organization to cover this fact in 2019.

Any European Basketball Fans?
The NY Post lists Victor Wembanyama at 7'5" and only 210 pounds. He clearly seemed to want to go to San Antonio, which might be a sign of maturity and intelligence while now seeming a metaphysical certainty. Superficially, he looks to have a VERY narrow frame from shoulders through the hips. I do not associate my gut reaction to the look of him with physical durability or long careers.

Caspian Sea in Modern variant
Question about the Modern variant: can a fleet on the north coast of Iran move into the Caspian Sea? The original variant description states that the Rostov canal is the *only* way to get a fleet into the Caspian Sea. But I find it rather odd that a fleet on the Iran north coast would not be allowed to go there (I have confirmed that building a fleet there is possible, that is not my question).

Airplane units
Several years ago, I played a Dip game that I could not fully recall. Not the people I played with, the power I played as, or the exact changes to the rules. All I could remember is that the map played on involved countries all over the globe; that, alongside armies and fleets, it featured aerial units (and even nukes)
