Sengoku Nagashino Feedback Thread
Hi Sengoku Nagashino players - please deposit your thoughts here for designer digestion as the first round of games resolves.

Please do not directly comment on the situation/players etc. of any active games. Please limit your comments to the variant design itself, as it appears at gamestart. Once a game has completed, it is fair game for analysis, but not before please.

Deep philosophical question about American culture
So I teach at a major public research university. And I keep noticing that my male students in their early 20s seem with a surprisingly high probability to be intimately familiar with the movie Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. This movie came out when I was in high school. And at the same time, they seem ignorant of In Living Color which is readily available on Youtube. So why DBAMTSCWDYJITH and not, for example, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka?

Game set up - NMR
I want to set a game so that it never processes a turn with out orders. I think that is setting “Turn” = 0.
But if I set “Delay”= 2 does that mean a two day/phase pause before that player is kicked? Or is he kicked immediately and there are 2 days for a replacement to appear. In the latter case what happens after the 2 days?

obsolete Sengoku variant
Hi all, designer of Sengoku here. I would love to get the latest version of Sengoku in use on this system, as it is much more balanced. Found here: http://dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Sengoku
Even if the DP system, can't be used, the version at http://nairenvorbeck.angelfire.com/ is still better than the one in use currently. Poor Mori needs a fair chance :-) Anyone willing/able to help me get these implemented?

Let's talk about scoring? More specifically, about whether the dreaded Points Per Supply Center (PPSC) scoring should remain an option?

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

Napoleonic Variant, and the lack of neutral centers
I had the honor to play 'Napoleonic' back in the lab (an awful game as Spain by the way). I had a question back then which I ask here and now:

Why there are no neutral supply centers?

Wow. Maybe there is some point to building Frigates now :D
I'm really interested to see what impact it has on game play. If we can get the right balance I'd really like to roll the principle out for my concept of a 1v1 Ninja vs Samurai on the updated Sengoku map.

Would be great to have that on Octopus and Chaoctopi too. Any unit with a double move retreat has a huge amount of power (since it gets to move on a turn where almost nobody else does).

+1 Octopus and Chaoctopi retreats too.

Could we perhaps make those additional variants of the existing maps, instead of overwriting them? The strategic utility of retreats, as the currently stand, is one of the more interesting aspects of playing with 2-move units (at least, for me).
Hominidae (934 D)
25 Oct 17 UTC
As I've said in the in-game messaging for a game, Pirates could really benefit from a WWIV-sized map. Sure, it's just the Caribbean, but it's so detailed that it needs a big map to comfortably see. Plus the two-space move makes it even more important to clearly see the map.
Hi Hominidae. Is the large version of the Pirates map not big enough?
CCR (1672 D)
26 Oct 17 UTC
Another bug I've seen in Pirates, I can't tell it happens in other large maps too, or it is specific for this variant: the large map show wrong colors!
Most times it's only non-sc provinces, but it often happens with supply centers...
E.g., check the final map for gameID=31802 and compare it with its large map:
http://vdiplomacy.com/map.php?gameID=31802&turn=18&mapType=large
The colors of the following provinces are wrong only on the large map:
Crooked Island Passage (CIP)
Caicos and Turks Island (CTI)
Hispaniola (Hisp)
Guadaloupe (Guad - supply center)
Cunana (supply center)

The Ambassador--not really, considering how complicated the Lesser Antilles can get. Maybe it could be improved by having thin attack lines and smaller units. And it would be nice to have the large map be the regular map rather than having two different sizes.

I report a bug in the following adjudication (S'1670) - I dunno if it can be replicated.
<http://vdiplomacy.com/map.php?gameID=31935&turn=8&mapType=large>
The dutch frigate in Waters of Spanish Main did not move away (bounce), thus it is considered to hold with strenght 1. At the same time, this sea was attacked by Dunkirker's frigate Puerto Cabello - attacking with strenght 1.5. The dutch frigate should have been dislodged, but it was not.
Yes, I double checked, no other units interefered in WoSM that season.
Hi CCR, these type of things are usually best logged with the Mod Team, and I feel there's a technical issue they usually put things on hold until Oli or a developer and fix the issue.
Hi CCR, Oli has had a look at this and due to all the coding hacks surrounding this variant it is questionable this can be fixed. While it is no consolation for your game, we're looking at updating the rules to reflect this.
