I did some work on the adjudicator and this might work again.
Not a very balanced variant, but has a really interesting start..

As the Variant Tournament thread was getting clogged i thought it'd be a good idea to separate the organisational and ranking part.

I still have to update the 'Points per game' section as i am suddenly called to other obligations. Yet, if anyone wants to update that themselves, please do so. Might be easiest if Doc does so as he probably has the best overview of all the games that each player has partaken in ;-)

Also sorry if I have made any mistakes (i believe I haven't). I copied Doc's overview that he posted in the other thread and added the results of FoW 2.
BobRoss (1752 D)
31 Aug 17 UTC
Also, if it is preferred to keep all of this in one thread after all, consider this forum thread non-existent ;-) My preference would go out to having the organisational part and ranking separate as there are currently so many tournaments underway and set-up that it's difficult to keep track of tournaments in the making if there are dozens of post about finished tournaments.

Hmm.. you're right. There is a discrepancy between played games/tournaments and total solos/victories.

It is probably another Sengoku tournament indeed. I guess Doc forgot to add it to the initial overview so perhaps he should have a look at the overview above and correct where necessary ;-) @Doc, most definitely no pressure but would be appreciated if you edit it when you have the time ;-)

Update on my list but it's a long list right now...
BobRoss (1752 D)

I might be able to update the list as I did with the FoW tournament. Yet, the manual update is quite mistake-prone (especially when it comes to the 'Points per game' section). Thus it takes quite a lot of time to update everything if I have to look up all tournament games through players in each respective tournament.

Would you by any chance have any sort of document where you have organised all of this stuff Doc? If there's some sort of Excel/Word sheet, that would make the job already much easier ;-)

Thanks so much BR for updating this. I just now saw your question a few posts above, and unfortunately no I don't have any spreadsheet. Maybe during winter break I'll put one together.
BobRoss (1752 D)

Not a problem at all :-)

I do have a question/remark though: On the one hand I think it's great to have the total scores/ranking of different tournaments in one overview. On the other hand, due to the different types of variants being played in tournaments (ranging from 5 to 15 players), the Points per Games section will never be fairly representative for example. Only a 2-way draw or Solo amounts to a score higher than 1 average point per game in a 5-way.

I don't know if there's a good solution to this, apart from seperating all tournament results and box them based on either specific variant or number of player in a variant. Yet, that would mean we're going to have a shitload of ranking overviews and I am already spamming this thread haha.
Switch up the scoring to a fixed "points per game" scoring and basically divide the points by the number in the draw. 3 points per game is divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 5 with just a two decimal places at 1.5, 1, .75, and .6 respectively. As we aren't likely to see many 6 or more way draws, that should be sufficient, but you could always set it at 4.2 points per game to go out to an 8 way draw at 3 decimal places. Solo could just get 1 extra point per game over the 2 way (the way it works now) to keep a single solo from dominating a smaller tournament.
We should still see about the same outcome as before on the existing tournaments this way. It likely would *not* effect first place, but could affect that one co-winner we have and might change some of the 2-N place standings swapping one person or another her or there.

Hi again! I'm sorry for this message it's a little bit spam. I'm very interested in joining this all time going tournament. How can I join?
Is someone interested in playing Napoleonic, 1600, or (I know you already played a tournament on this map) Fog of War? Any other ideas? Maybe Dark Ages?
Thanks,
PinkEgg
Hey PinkEgg,

All you need do is put your name on the list for one being formed or start your own mini tournament and ask someone to be the GM for it. There is no formal structure here beyond playing enough games so that every one is each country once and not choosing a special scenario like Rin where some countries simply have no chance to win and may not have a very good chance to be part of the draw. If you are wanting a 3 player scenario, it's best to play 6 games, not three, as then every combination of the board is played. It's not as feasible with four or more where dozens, hundreds, or worse yet thousands of games are required to get to every combination.

Thank you so much for a fun first tournament. I barely missed out on a solo there, though at least I made it into 3 draw pools. I also learned quite a bit about the map.

The map itself seemed to favor the corner powers. Serbia only drew once, while Greece never drew. On the flipside, Bulgaria and Italy usually had a strong showing.
tantrumizer (1557 D)

I wouldn't even classify Bulgaria as a corner power per se, but Romania is too weak generally to take advantage of its position. Bulgaria and Italy were definitely the standouts.
@tantrumizer, well we were very close in score. .58 different. Not much. :-)
Thank you all for participating in this tournament. It was absolutely invaluable in terms of data for the variant redesign (which is pretty clearly necessary in my mind.) Italy will be nerfed, and there will be a variety of other changes as well. This will be a full 2.0 instead of 1.3

Looking forward to that! I like the map a lot, but if I wasn't playing a tournament and got Romania or Greece, I'd groan. But then again, I really prefer playing balanced games (e.g. not classic Diplomacy!) and I know a lot of people aren't bothered by it so much.

In my opinion, almost all variants are unbalanced, even classic (although I'd argue that it's one of the most balanced non-symmetric variants yet to be implemented). The key is to work with the imbalance and use it to your advantage. It's tough to do in press games, even tougher in nopress - but not impossible.
I'm with GOD. A challenge is good and, in full press, there is a lot to be said for negotiation skills. Some of the worst positions can actually do well if a skilled negotiator and strategist takes them on.

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

not quite ready, but... SE Asia 800
going to refine Balkans 1860 and Sengoku: Nagashino as needed before trying to implement this one. Thought I would just give y'all a peek behind the curtain. Thoughts welcome! (it has a few known imbalances to address, but it's close.)

Classic 1898 Variant adaptation
I do the adaptation for 1898 variant. Who knows the author of the variant to mention him in the description. Or it's Hasbro itself?

Tactics
In year one when you just meeting everyone, maybe there anonymous but for sure you don't know any of them. How do you know who to trust?
They can be lying through their teeth and text doesn't show tone of voice or eye contact so you have no idea. If you believe them they may stab you. If you don't you venture into a DMZ and piss them off. Ask around to others and you get rumors or nothing. This game seems so much better suited to face to face.

Classic Mini-Tourney - Is there interest?
I thought about making a mini-tourney - comprising a single game - using a similar scheme to most Face-to-Face scoring systems.

Basically it'll be a Classic game, running until Fall 1907 and a PPSC structure. The bet would be 100 points - for a ultimate pot worth 700 points.

Unable to enter certain orders. How to contact GM
Can someone help. I am playing one of the odder variants. New for me. I’ve read the variant page repeatedly and seems I ought to be able to enter a certain order. But it’s not available as an option. (Maybe I’m missing something. Or maybe a bug). Emailed the mods. But how do I contact GameMaster min a gunboat game?
Thanks

I love vDip
Enjoying this new golden age of variant development.

Hat tip to Oli and those building variants and supporting their development in the background.
