Crazy Variant Idea
I was browsing the available variants, and one that caught my eye was the "Chaos" variant, where all players control one supply center in the classic map. Then, I though, "What if this same principle were applied to another variant?"

Does anyone think that a chaos variant would be interesting on the World Diplomacy IX, Fall of the American Empire, or Modern Diplomacy II variant maps?

Mexico stinks in Gobble-Earth
Mexico is the biggest weakness in the balance of Gobble-Earth, with constantly poor preformance. Why is this and what can be done?

Basically, Mexicos is eliminated almost all the time, and the games that "go well" make the country a secondary power at best. Looking at how players act in game confirms this; only once has Mexico ended at 20+ centers (they got a 3rd place in a draw at 26 centers. 37 is solo), and that game had USA in CD.

In the early game the main problem is that Mexico and the US both has as priority nr 1 to deal with the other. If one of them tries to go the other direction, they will be stabbed, and very few games do not have a US-Mexican war by 1902. The design is made to try to promote Mexico-Colombian, Mexico, Argentinaian, and US-Colombian wars, but this rarely happens in the first years. Mexico-Colombia fights sometimes, but Colombia is a pain in the ass to gain on as Mexico. Colombia is also the best preforming power in the Americas, which might be conntected to Mexico's poor preformance and vice versa.

Mid-game Mexico faces the problem that the centers quickly run out. Again, the most likely situation is that USA has been taken, since USA is the first priority and Colombia such a pain to take over. This puts Mexico in a situation were oceans and tricky lines must be crossed, but without the size usually connected with this as North America does not have many centers.

Any late-game issues for Mexico are unknown since Mexico do not tend to get that far. At any rate, late-game situations do not tend to be quite as country specific.

So three small edits that might change this are:
-Give Honduras a SC.
-Switch the starting units for Mexico to have the fleet on the west coast of Mexico (City) and the army in Guadalajara.
-Disconntect Cuba from Miami by connecting Gulf of Mexico to Sargasso Sea.

One well located center in Honduras, that is clearly a Mexican gain, will certainly make Mexico more potent. Moreover, it will completly change how Mexico will be positioned after 1901. Since the only center the army now can reach on its own is Los Angeles, it will often be used for convoys, primarily to Honduras or Nicaragua. With a fleet in South Pacific Ocean and an army in Nicaragua, Mexico can acctually build another fleet and move into Nazca Ridge in order to try to convoy the army to Chile in F 1902 for an attack on Argentina. More commonly a fleet can be positioned in Honduras, and an attack on Colombia made much more viable. This will of course be bad for Colombia, but they are strong already.

Meanwhile, having Cuba further from Miami makes this center less of a US tilting one. Mexico can now also look onto Cuba in a more equal manner, and surprise attacks on USA can include fleets in Sargasso. Cuba also becomes more interesting for Colombia earlier in the game, and USA and Colombia hopefully will be more likely to engage in combat, essentially creating a more dynamic setting for negotiations in the area with focus on Cuba and Haiti.

Possible drawbacks are that Colombia might be too exposed to Mexico too early; Colombia might be doing well in the long run, but messing up the cushioned early game could quickly send Colombia far down. USA might also not benefit from the Cuba edit, and USA is only doing OK at the moment.

Is there a variant that Mexico is good in?!!!
G-Man - if you're playing as French owned Mexico in American Conflict it generally does reasonably well.

That said I was listening to a podcast on the French intervention in the 1860's and feel the map, while an alternative history, would be interesting if a proper Mexican player was introduced.
Pretzel - Gobble Earth aims more for historical accuracy with a little bit of balance, while most games put balance over historical accuracy.

Thanks Ambassador. Good to know that Mexico is good in at least one variant! Because it sucks in Fall of the American Empire IV and World War IV 6.2.

G-Man have you ever played Imperial II? I love playing Mexico there, only beaten by China. The whole variant is far cooler than Gobble...thanks Oli.

No, Imperial is on my hit list of variants to try out. I'll have to add American Conflict too. No reason a central power should be at such a starting disadvantage. Thanks God!

Liberals do not mind unequal outcomes if everyone has equal opportunities. Socialists want both equal opportunities and equal outcomes. Gobble-Earth do not mind unequal opportunities if everyone has equal outcomes. Or in other words, if Colombia and Britain solos as often it doesn't matter if they are 2 to 13 in 1901.

That said, historical accuracy has been a major lead in the creation of the variant, so balance has been reserved for WTA games, leaving PPSC a total mess. In WTA however, there's no connection between result and starting centers. For those of you who havn't played, this is done by having a special build rule for colonies, making empires hard to manage.

For example, I counted the number of 20+ preformances in WTA at this site so far, and Europe has less such results than the others, with half of those from Europe being Turkey alone. So the map is not properly balanced (yet), but it is only in PPSC that it has anything to do with how much you start with.

A fourth change can be a new sea zone around the Bahamas, let's call it Bahama Banks, connecting to Haiti, Carribean, Cuba, Gulf of Mexico, Miami and Sargasso Sea. This sea zone is not very interesting for Mexico in itself, but given the new disconnection of Cuba from Miami, the USA will appretiate this to be able to bring in units to support on Haiti in case of conflidt, and Mexico will sure like USA focusing more on Haiti than Cuba. The USA can also go for Carribean without controlling the Greater Antilles first. Colombia will find a more troublesome USA, but also has more tactical options in an invasion given there are two sea zones to move to.

SEEKING PLAYTESTERS FOR DIPLOMACY VARIANT
I've been working on a Diplomacy variant since 2012. It has characteristics similar to Ambition and Empire, Payola, and 1648. However, it has several distinct mechanics borrowed from other games. The description of the variant is at http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Europe_1615:_Prelude_to_War. If you're interested please shoot me an email at medeiros412@aim.com.
Thank you.
