Crazy Variant Idea
I was browsing the available variants, and one that caught my eye was the "Chaos" variant, where all players control one supply center in the classic map. Then, I though, "What if this same principle were applied to another variant?"

Does anyone think that a chaos variant would be interesting on the World Diplomacy IX, Fall of the American Empire, or Modern Diplomacy II variant maps?

do D point mean anything?
Rather philosophical but if I drop 100 D in a game and loose is it the same factor of V points.

Your question is not very clear. But, I'll try to answer.

vpoints are completely different than dpoints. The amount of dpoints you bet does not affect how many vpoints you gain or lose.
Strider (1604 D)
29 Feb 16 UTC
Ok then if the bet of D points is 100 is there any correlation with the gain or loss of V points.

Reason is have have noticed some games with a low pot say 2 have 14/20 gain in v points for the winner. Conversely a larger pot say 90 might only gain 60 v points

"Ok then if the bet of D points is 100 is there any correlation with the gain or loss of V points."

As far as I am aware there is no correlation. I think the amount you win or lose depends on the vPoints of the players in the game not the D points invested in the game. Essentially the site has two entirely separate ratings systems.

I hope I understand this correctly.
Devonian (1887 D)

The dpoint pot size of the game has no correlation to the vpoints awarded.

Think of it this way (This might be a little simplified):

For dpoints, the players determine the number of dpoints bet. Each player puts the same bet into the pot, and the winnings are distributed according to the outcome. (WTA, the winner gets all, and draws get equal amounts. PPSC, everyone gets dpoints based on supply centers.)

But for vpoints, the system determine the number of vpoints bet per player. Each player puts in different vpoints based on their skill level. Higher skilled players put in higher vpoints, and lower skilled players put in fewer. Then the points are distributed according to the outcome. It's a lot more complicated than this, but I think it describes the outcome in a general way.

I would love it if there were an entirely separate rating system for 1 vs 1 games. Diplomacy games are very hard to apply any ratings system to, but for 1 vs 1 you could just use the same Elo system that chess uses.

Never going to happen of course, but it would be nice.

I agree. Or at least give them a little more weight. I have 4 1v1 wins where I got zero points. And one multiplayer games, where I was in a 5 player draw and got 263 D. In a lot of ways, winning a multiplayer game is a lot easier.
Devonian (1887 D)

*263 vpoints, not dpoints
spyman (1072 D)

Definitely more weighting would be a great start. It's silly that you can win 10 games in a row (1 vs 1) against higher rated players (hypothetically) and end up with far fewer points than you received from a single five player draw.
spyman (1072 D)

Btw more than 51% of all games played on vdiplomacy are 1 vs 1 games. The next highest proportion of games is 7 players with slightly under 12%.

Two player is probably popular to warrant its own rating system. I know I would happy to donate money to make that happen.
spyman (1072 D)
29 Feb 16 UTC
typo.. Two player is probably popular *enough to warrant its own rating system.

1 vs 1 would possibly be even more popular with a decent rating system.
Strider (1604 D)

Is there any way to determine what vpoints you are putting into a game before you commit. Would it indicate the quality of the players? Or just your stake.
Or rather is it calculated at the end of the game with the ranking of players at that time...

Reason I ask is the D points dictate if you can play a game, and indeed how many but the site judges performance with a different system. This ranking is at odds with the game setup.

About the only way it could calculate vpoints before a game would be if you were the last person to join - at which point, calculating it for them would be unfair to everyone else. And even then, I was under the impression that the amount won/lost varied based on how you fared, and who actually won - lose less if the person who was was expected to beat you, lose more if you lose to someone you were expected to beat.
How much you lose is constant based on the players in the game. How much you *win* varies based on relative position versus expectation.
Devonian (1887 D)

I don't think that is correct. Here is a game I lost:

Everyone lost a different amount.

Do the number of supply centers factor in the vdip-points calculations?
Devonian (1887 D)
02 Mar 16 UTC
As I understand it, in a WTA game, no. In a PPSC game, yes.
spyman (1072 D)

I think webdip might be moving to a new ratings system, TrueSkill. Could be one for this site to consider too.
What I meant was how much you lose is constant at that VRating. It doesn't matter if you enter a game with 6 higher rated or 6 lower rated players. Assuming the same rating, you contribute the same amount n both games.
Of course, I could be thinking of WebDip's ratings where it is 2/35ths or something like that of your points are contributed.
mouse (1825 D)
03 Mar 16 UTC
It does look like you're thinking of WebDip's system. By the game Devonian lined, we can see it's dependent on your expected win rate against everyone else in the game - and that it's only a flat loss if it's WTA or you get eliminated.

SEEKING PLAYTESTERS FOR DIPLOMACY VARIANT
I've been working on a Diplomacy variant since 2012. It has characteristics similar to Ambition and Empire, Payola, and 1648. However, it has several distinct mechanics borrowed from other games. The description of the variant is at http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Europe_1615:_Prelude_to_War. If you're interested please shoot me an email at medeiros412@aim.com.
Thank you.
