What the frell?! Now I'm really confused.
So, IE used to not display the proper colors in-game here (but it did so fine over at WebDip). I was told this was a problem with IE 8 & IE 9. Suddenly, the colors are all correct and I haven't changed a thing. What the frell?!

Coder Needed!
I recently recommended a variant be added, the shift variant, in the lab here; http://lab.vdiplomacy.com/forum.php?threadID=276#276
Oli replied, saying that it wouldn't be too hard to code but he didn't really have the time to do it at the moment, so I would need to find someone else to do it.
If anyone else who knows how to code a variant wants to do it, please PM me or post on the lab thread and I'll send you details!

what do you think about my status info? click my name!
I summed up my data because I find it frustrating when i try to see a player's stats. Say player X won 5 games. but he has 12 pages of data and in the end i find out that it was just 1v1!
wouldnt be easier to list players games and/or with links
Do you think that is a good feature to implement in this site (is it possible?)

Need a new powerful country
In the anon game http://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=7857 Italy, once the most powerful country on the board (It had made a few too many enemies, though) CDed, changing the dynamics of the game greatly and giving Turkey a very unfair advantage. Anyone want to replace (I really ought to have made this before, but...)

Who is in Europe?
The net outflows from Greek banks went up yesterday by a factor of ten. Why is there money left in Greek banks? One would think that when one voted for default and devaluation that one would not then be suddenly surprised when one got it. And if one votes thusly, shouldn't one place a positive probability on default and devaluation? And shouldn't that realization cause one to transfer one's savings into German or Dutch banks?

Very Serious Thread Daily!
Brought to you by King Atom and Morgul Blades. Cut your victims clean with Morgul Blades!
But basically the purpose of this thread is very simple, I will provide a topic, and then discussion will begin. Each response is limited to 150 words, and discussion on any given topic will end at the end of the day.

Today's Topic: How has the degradation of modern language seriously affected your ability to communicate? Many people find it easier to communicate by using abbreviations that are easily understood between two people than to speak using full words. Others, like myself, find it repulsive and cumbersome to speak with certain people. Do you believe that language is more of an art that needs to be preserved, or are these changes merely a part of our adapting society?

Discussion on this topic will end at May 16, 8:30 (Atom Foltz Time).

My mistake.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

Aren't abbreviations, much like slang and jargon, frequently an in group identity device as much as if not more than an easer of communication?

BTW, neologisms abound. New words are being created faster than previously. Usage shares are actually larger for word use "winners" than at any point in the last 200 years and the life span of words seems to be shrinking. I read a paper maybe 6 months ago analyzing the entire Google Books archive as a time specified data set.

Alrighty then...discussion on that topic is now over.

Here is our next topic:
Relativity or Quantum Mechanics? How do you view the world and why?

Discussion on this topic will end at May 14, 10:00 PM (Atom Foltz Time).

Particles are: 1.The left-handed quark doublet, containing the left-handed up quark and left-handed down quark; 2.The anti-right-handed-up quark; 3.The anti-right-handed-down quark [ Not "hand-me-down" as, big sister's clothes ]; 4.The left-handed lepton doublet, containing the left-handed electron and left-handed neutrino; 5.The anti-right-handed electron (a.k.a the right-handed positron); 6.The anti-right-handed neutrino; and, Last in the List, 7.The Standard Model Higgs
Nota bene! The strong force, weak force, and hypercharge.
Upon electroweak symmetry breaking, the weak one is Mariano Rivera's new bionic arm. (Apologies to "Quantum Diaries" from which the List was lifted but not sifted.
taylor4 (936 D)

On the 7 particle list, above, there are clearly descibed, observed (or observed by effect[s]) subatomic particles.
Did the observation of same, and-or others of like, or nearly unlike, "nature" [ that catchall word ], with unlike or like Grace, Spin, Hypercharge etc., etc., and (perhaps) inexplicable or blooming obvious description(s) INFLUENCE THE ACTION/Reaction/Motion/Stability of such particles? I take it this is a cardinal part of the Theory of QUANTUM Mechanics.

Fine.
Let it be known that 'topic of the day' will now become 'topic of the week.' Each old discussion shall be ended on a Wednesday, while the new discussions shall start sometime during the preceding Tuesday.

This week's topic should be something interesting...something about Rock & Roll...

What is your opinion of modern rock? Truly that which evolved from the classic pieces which defined the music industry of the sixties should earn some level of recognition for strong foundational principles. But has more modern music strayed too far to be considered part of our beloved Rock & Roll era?
taylor4 (936 D)

I have heard the Jersey sound, the New Haven sound, the New York sound & it is so much ear-splitting noise. 10 (ten %) percent of the general populace desire only so-called "Classical" music and of those a few percentum like Opera. Pop is so much muzak - "Elevator Music.". Sometimes "Bad Music" (like most American automobile advertising music) requires a decent song or tune to "blow out your ears" and allow one to work or do something undisturbed.
- For R&R and its Heavy Metal adjunct: If you must play a percussion instrument, there's the piano. And it does have "Soft Pedal".. Give me a classical piece for harpsichord or fortepiano anytime and TURN DOWN YOUR iPhone on Public Transit, puhleeeeeeeeze
Scordatura (1396 D)

I must be in the 10 (ten %) then. :)

I have a response to your first post, and I do not care that the day for that discussion has passed.

You act under the assumption that there exists one solid "English language" that has never been deviated from. This is a construct. Words are constantly created (most often nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, very rarely prepositions or pronouns or anything else) and many fall into and out of fashion as times progress. The meaning of words changes all of the time as well. The word "egregious" used to mean extremely good, and now it means extremely bad.

My point is that these abbreviations that have become new words aren't horrible, and they CERTAINLY aren't unnatural. If you have a problem with new words, then don't use them. Nobody's "degrading" language by using them.
