Replacement Germany?
We need a new Germany is a World IV game: http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=648

In a decent position, but not great. Have a strong ally but a couple strong enemies too. However, a new person might be able to change the diplomatic situation since I believe the wars were as much personal at this point as tactical.

Greek Diplomacy coasts
Souldn't Thrace have 2 coasts (east and west) in Greek Diplomacy? http://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#GreekDip
Illium is a canal, similar to constantinople, but Thrace, equaling Bulgaria in classic, should have 2 coasts, shouldn't it?

I have a problem
Today I can't save or finalize my orders. After few seconds i push save or fnlz, the page becomes blank; you can wait hours but, although the Mozilla circle spins, nothing happens. So I reloaded the main page and tried again. I tried 10 times unsuccessful, then I tried saving 1 unit per time. Sometime it works, but it took 1 hour to complete a 9 units game. Help! Any advice?

Sengoku Discussion?
Hi. I'm interested in trying out a Sengoku game after I'm done with the game I'm in now. I'd like to read up a little about folks' experiences first, though, and I can't find any discussion here. If you've played one of these variants before, sound off and let me know what you thought.

how do you mean? there is a timeplan....

question: is it allowed to "preplay" given pairings of the round robin?
like if someone of my group is online I haven't played yet, can we just play those games already... (speeding things up)?
RoxArt (1732 D)
19 May 11 UTC
well could be a "cheating" problem cause others know results before... but just play em without clear name but "signed" pns stating that those games count...
fasces349 (1007 D)
19 May 11 UTC
I would prefer if we stick to the scheudale. And you'll find in the long run that it is better to have the games spread out.

Like what if i finished all my games tomorrow? I'd have to wait for everyone else to finish theres a few weeks from now...

And thanks for switching us about.
gman314 (1016 D)
20 May 11 UTC
The original plan was to not start until the 20th, aka tomorrow. Some games are already done so is it alright if players start more games at their own pace instead of waiting another week? Assuming that both players want to advance.
gman314 (1016 D)
20 May 11 UTC
So, we're allowed to play any varian we like. But doesn't that make some variants poor choices? Let's say a very good player could win both games against a very weak player on GvI. But then, they play GvR and the weak player wins as Russia thanks to natural advantage. So, should we then score games by percentage of total owned SCs owned by the player. That way, the difference would be somewhat compensated for without using SC count which could give a larger map more weighting.
fasces349 (1007 D)
20 May 11 UTC
however a good player would never agree to a GvR...
fasces349 (1007 D)
20 May 11 UTC
as for the starting, try to start no earlier then the 24th, 3 days before the intended start. As some of the games haven't started and others have barely progressed, I don't want to get into a situation where one guy has to wait 3+ weeks for his next opponent, besides, I'd rather each individual round to be finished before starting the next, so people can't base their perfomances on whether they will make the playoffs or not.
Like for example, say your guarenteed to make the play-offs or not make them, you might intentionally slack your perfomances to make certain players make the play-offs.
Actually, imbalanced variants shouldn't be a problem. After all, both sides play each country once. So theoretically the good player would split with the bad player in the imbalanced variant and win the balanced one twice.

Furthermore, as fasces said, a clearly superior player wouldn't agree to imbalanced variants which prohibit him gaining an advantage.
canaduh (1293 D)
20 May 11 UTC
Hmm - not sure. What if you have never played the variant? I have only done 1v1 before this tournament, so fasces has handed a huge advantage to those who play me first. But I would no say I was a subpar player.
Hellenic Riot (1267 D)
20 May 11 UTC
Both games must be on the same variant, so imbalanced variants hurt both players.
RoxArt (1732 D)
20 May 11 UTC
fasces: even if I'm sure to make the playoffs I will never play bad: 1st because of my record 2nd because a s first of group a I will play 4th of group b... ;)

and I will never agree playing FvsG haha ;) I think I will play only GvsI :D
canaduh (1293 D)
22 May 11 UTC
Right - small thought, and entails work for fasces. Can we score both 2 D for a win 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, but also the difference in SCs. I just wonder if it would make a difference to the score.
fasces349 (1007 D)
22 May 11 UTC
I'd rather not use a difference score, as:
1. More work for me
2. I stop trying in 1 v 1s when I know I'll loose
Hellenic Riot (1267 D)
22 May 11 UTC
That makes it extra harsh if you fuck up an order, on something already very harsh. No thanks. :P
fasces349 (1007 D)
22 May 11 UTC
@Roxart: however if you know you could beat #3 seed but would probably loose to # 4 seed, you would consider loosing just to play #3 seed...

so what happens if my opponent misses a phase?
langaidin (1064 D)
22 May 11 UTC
I'm guessing an NMR in a 24 hour 1v1 game will result in a crippling setback. I would simply recommend not missing one. =)
fasces349 (1007 D)
23 May 11 UTC
missing one is stupid, its your opponents fault...
RoxArt (1732 D)
23 May 11 UTC
NMR ----> blacklist!
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
23 May 11 UTC
No no no. No blacklists. We're not all students. Students can check PC all day long. I don't want to be blacklisted if my real life has kept me away from PC for a whole day.
Who misses a turn will probably lose the game. This is an adequate punishment for NMR, IMO.
RoxArt (1732 D)
23 May 11 UTC
well I do not want people in such turneys who nmr... if there is problems you can always ask for pause.. or put the phases on 2days and play faster when possible...
RoxArt (1732 D)
23 May 11 UTC
And we all have good sense, so if you nmr 1 time and come back with an explanation....
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
23 May 11 UTC
Neither I want NMRs in Tourney.
And, of course, I'd ask for a pause or for 2days/phase, if I'd be forewarned I'm busy.
But life is not always that simple, and I couldn't ask for a pause if I don't have a PC.

"And we all have good sense, so if you nmr 1 time and come back with an explanation.... "
1) Anyone could invent a good explanation
2) Who should judge how good/believable this explanation is?
3) Someone may not want his private life facts be discussed on a Diplomacy Forum
4) missing a turn = 98% lose the game. Enough punishment.

That's good sense, IMHO.
Guaroz is pretty much absolutely right here. To disclose, I am that NMRer, and though I am in fact a college student I am also a gainfully employed college student, which naturally means I am very busy.

Furthermore, though I will say my odds looked somewhat grim before the NMR, that NMR probably gave myrmidon the game, so it's not like I'm getting away scot-free here.

guys, more than likely I will lose my computer for atleast a month... so IDK what we want to do here... I will let you know for sure by the end of the day, but from the looks of it right now, I will lose it, which would mean that you would have to like, take me out and put another person in in my place... once again, will let you know asap
whiskeyandfeet (719 D)

What's NMR stand for? I get that's it's missing a turn, but what's the actual acronym?
