Appears to be a problem in the coding of the Youngstown World War II map
I'm currently playing Italy in a Youngstown World War II map, and I've run into a problem. The supply zone of Tirane is very obviously drawn so that it's adjacent to the Ionian Sea, but the game will not let me order a movement from the Ionian into Tirane.

Sitter needed until Saturday!
I've got exams this week so could a kind soul please, please sit for me until Saturday. I'm only in two games so it shouldn't be too much of a burden. I'm trying to get an extend for the WWIV team game I am in, though, so I'm not sure if I need sitting for that yet.

Tell me about your life!
Greetings to all the men and women of VDip! I had an idea that I think will help us grow as a community, and get to know each other better. I'd like to know more about you! Feel free to give as much, or as little, detail as you wish. things you can include would be your birthday, age, location, career/schooling, etc. etc. This will help us bond with each other, as well as get some good stats on the demographics on the site!

Take over from Civil Disorder thread
I wonder if the system can be put in condition to append an automatic message each time a country goes in Civil Disorder, displaying gameID, country, previous player (questionable).
That would shorten the distance between supply and demand and would help filling open positions in time…at least the playable ones.

Phantom Variant Idea
I thought of this idea the other day that I was thinking could make an interesting variant if it is actually possible. Part of this idea is based off the idea of having units with different strengths like in the Pirates variant. More information below:
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Keep in mind, this is just an idea and I have no coding experience to know if it is possible at all.

Every spring phase, each unit has two different move orders. An actual order which the real unit will follow and a phantom order that a phantom unit will follow. Thus, from every unit on the board, two more "units" will be spawned, a real one and a phantom one. In the autumn, the real unit and phantom unit each has its own order instead of having a real and phantom order for all units again. At the end of autumn retreats, all phantom units are destroyed and only the real units remain for the counting of units and SC's to determine builds.
In terms of some of the specifics for gameplay, phantom units have a strength of 0 and real units have a strength of 1 (like normal diplomacy). Phantom units act exactly like real units, except they cannot capture SC's in the autumn and their support holds or support moves do not add support (because their strengths are 0). For example, a phantom unit supporting a real unit against another single real unit would result in a bounce because the phantom unit adds no real support.

A couple questions I thought of that I figured would be good to have input on:
What happens when a phantom unit is attacked by a normal unit? should they be allowed a normal retreat or should they be disbanded automatically (like non-player units in variants like Known World 901)?
what should happen if a phantom unit attacks another phantom unit? Should they just bounce or should both be destroyed?
Should it be played on a smaller map? or be adapted to an existing map?

All in all, this is just an idea I had and wanted to put it out there to see if it would be a plausible variant idea. Please give me your input :D

this sounds like a great idea!
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Ima, you have any coding experience to know if its plausible? xD
Imagonnalose (992 D)
10 May 13 UTC
heck no....i'm a great computer user, but not anywhere close to a programmer. I'd definitely talk to Oli though. If he thinks its possible, then I say go for it. I'd play this one. Did you have an map in mind or would this be a totally new design?
I think the idea's a cool one (though I have no coding experience either, so I can't speak to the possibilities of really doing it), but I would have 1 question: does the owner of the units know which is the phantom and which is real? or are both the owner and opponent(s) surprised each time?
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Atlas, the owner of the units would have knowledge of which is which. for example, when submitting orders, a unit would be either an amry, fleet, phantom army, or phantom fleet and orders are entered as normal.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Ima, as for the map, I wasn't sure if it would be reasonable to maybe try out the idea on an existing map like Classic and then consider making a new map if it would make the variant better.
Imagonnalose (992 D)
10 May 13 UTC
I think classic would be too small actually.... not in the number of players, but number of territories and closeness of said territories....

I see a lot of bounces happening...the game may not go anywhere.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
I can understand an issue being with a closeness of all the territories. However, i don't think there will be any issues with a lot of bounces, at least not anymore than a normal game. That was the goal of having phantom units have a strength of 0 so that the "extra" units on the board don't really cause more clutter. They can't actually do anything, they are more there for a visual distraction as to what a player's actual plan is.
Retillion (2304 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Spartan22,

Don't take this the wrong way but I do not like at all your idea : it adds so much randomness to the game that it becomes very much based on luck !
Imagonnalose (992 D)
10 May 13 UTC
so if a phantom unit moves to burgandy and a real unit of another player does the same, how does that play out?
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Ima, with a real unit at strength 1 and phantom unit at strength 0, the real unit would get into Burgundy.

Retillion, I understand you disagreeing and I appreciate your opinion. I understand your worrying about the randomness that it could add to the game. What I was thinking about when I came up with the idea was adding another aspect of deception to the game. For example, you send your real unit and phantom unit at an enemy, and they don't know which one can actually threaten their centers and which one is a ploy. Thank you for your opinion though :]
G-Man (2466 D)
10 May 13 UTC
I think it's an interesting idea, but I have to agree with Retillion. I think it subtracts (chaos) more than it adds (deception) to the game. Now, if you had a variant where units have special powers, and one unit has phantom capabilities, I could see that being fun and strategic. But a lot of thought would have to go into each of the special powers and their strengths, weaknesses, balance with each other, and overall playability.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
I agree having units with different powers (although I've thought about it) would be very difficult to do. Would it become potentially less chaotic and more deceptive if only half of your units, rounding down, could have the phantom ability?
Ninjanrd (1248 D)
10 May 13 UTC
Oli has talked with people before, and sadly, we are not allowed to have variants that use more that 2 types of units. For this to be hosted here, it would have to be Cataclysm-esque.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
10 May 13 UTC
Hmm, I will try and talk to Oli and see what his thoughts are on feasibility.

A cool addition might be, at the end of the fall phase. If you have any builds, you can convert a phantom, to a real unit, instead of building.

Though that might be a little complicated if a phantom was in a supply center.
Just a note, someone said this but I wanted to ellaborate, the way this siite is set up only supports two unit types, so you'd have to make it an army only variant map, but I like the idea. It could be a very interesting addition to have fog of war, it'd make it so you'd be able to send out phantoms as ghost scouts. I'm not sure if the auto disband would work, or having two units inhabit the same space, just the way everything is set up, but it's definately a cool idea.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
12 May 13 UTC
All right, thanks for the input. I posted on the modforum to hopefully get some insight for the two unit type situation.

gameID=12532: Glitch Alert for Oli!
BIO can't move to SNT, VAL or MDZ, but can support all three. Also PIT can't convoy to VAL, ATA, or ARQ (I had a fleet in CHB for that purpose). I believe the game has a major glitch. Am I right, or was it the loaner computer I was using being dysfunctional (a distinct possibility)?
