Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

New convoy-code.
Thanks to tobi1 we have a new and improved convoy-code.
This was really a problem for all "big" variants.
Very cool you could solve this problem. I did take a look at your code, but I'm absolutely clueless... :-)

Gunboat specs
If the "Gunboat", "Public Press", or "Per Rulebook" rules are employed, shouldn't the game be automatically "Anon" as well? If it weren't, then players could just PM each other, defeating the purpose.

Question about social norms for players
In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.

Port this?
Here's a variant we might want to try (with a few tweaks, of course):

Testing a possible new variant
I've made a simple Diplomacy variant, but I haven't tested it. Would this be the place to (perhaps) gain some testers?

Noob question
Hi, long time dipper, first time vdipper. Is it possible to enter orders using an android phone, or do I have to wait to get in front of a PC? The orders field just says "loading order" and nothing else happens.

Apologies for the stupid question, and hello!

I've been wondering how well you could write a script to play gunboat diplomacy. Probably not very well (at least to begin with!), but it would be fun to try. I don't really have the time to do this properly right now, but I'm interested to know if it has been done before, or whether anyone would be keen to try at some point in the future.

Issue with South American Supremacy Map
Hey, I'm getting ready to start a game with some friends using the South American Supremacy map. It appears the map is starting with a fleet in Bogata, which is a landlocked territory. the variant homepage lists Bogata as starting with an army. Is there is a good way to correct this? Thanks!

Map Markings
I apologize if this is a repeat question or if it's found somewhere obvious, but I'm brand new to vDiplomacy and I can't seem to find what the difference is between the two types of what I believe are SC markings on the Bye Bye Federalism map.

Can someone help me?

Option to play a variant with fewer than the max number of players?
Hello all,

I and two of my friends love playing 3 player diplo games together. Having gone through the different 3 player maps, I'm wondering if there is a way to play on some of the larger variants, but with just 3 people? For instance, I'd love it if we could play a 3 player game on Fall of the American Empire IV.

Policy For Site Unavailability/Glitch
What do you mods think about having some kind of policy posted to address when the site goes down or is not functional in the future? You have chosen to cancel the 1st game of Divided States over this, but the last time I was involved in a game that had this happen, the last phase was replayed. So currently, the response isn't consistent.

Lutetia! I can't pass up on that one, I read too much Asterix & Obelix (are those comics even a thing in the US? Didn't hear anything about them while I lived there).

Gotta try one myself: Why is brown the color associated with National Socialism?
The easy answer would be that it was the color of the shirts worn by the SA militia of Hitler's NSDAP party, but why did they choose brown as the color for their shirts?
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
Wasnt brown the colour of fascism, since tge simbol of fascism is brown(I dont remember what its proper name is.)
Ztir (1142 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
A number of symbols/insignia/uniforms were brown, but they were all adapted from the SA uniform. And that one has quite the amusing backstory :) It is a rather difficult question, I admit.
vixol (1774 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
Fasces was brown? Fasces being the bundle of twigs that etruscian guards had their weapons in because there was a weapon prohibition in Rome in those days.
Ztir (1142 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
Getting closer, Italy does have something to do with it! Hitler and the NSDAP leadership regarded the Italian fascist movement as a model, and Mussolinis militia wore black shirts (hence their name, the Blackshirts). So Hitler wanted black shirts for the SA as well, but they ended up with brown ones. But why? Surely you could buy a black shirt in Germany in the 1920s...
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
Maybe because conspiration?Lotsa people in black attracted attention,brown-not so much.
Ztir (1142 D)
26 Jan 18 UTC
Turns out the black shirts were just too expensive, or rather, the brown ones were really cheap. The uniform of the German colonial troops had a brown shirt, and after Germany lost all its colonies in WW1, the German army literally had tens of thousands of brown shirts just lying around and wanted to get rid of them. The NSDAP bought loads of them, just because they could get them for next to no money. And that's how brown became the fascist color! ;)

@vixol @Amby
The correct answer is that the first wave of settlers came from Indonesia (typically Borneo). However, they were later joined by waves of Bantu settlers.
Vixol, the language route was correct. As a result of Indonesian colonization, Madagascar's language is from the Austronesian family.
I'm giving it to d-ice re what happened yesterday 230 years ago. On 26 January 1788 the first British fleets arrived in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) to set up a penal colony. By default it was led by the first British Governor of what was called New South Wales. That pretty much encompassed all of Australia. Although as time went by and the colony grew in the early 1800's with other penal colonies and free settlers New South Wales was broken up into other colonies that come 1901 federated into modern Australia, each becoming their own states.
@Ztir - wow interesting stuff!

Zheng He did six voyages with fleets of sometimes over 60 ships, visiting Southeast Asia, India, Arabia and even Somalia, all of that nearly a century before Vasco da Gama's and Columbus' voyages.

Whereas I could recall that he was exiled to St. Helena after initially escaping, but not where the first was. Tag team question answering!
ubercacher16 (2160 D)

Yup.
Uber and mouse have combined for the correct answer. Napoleon escaped from Elba, and was then exiled to St. Helena for the rest of his life.
