Imbalanced map?
It seems as if several maps need some balancing work. For example, England* v Turkey is skewed toward England, and in Rinascimento, the French are virtually at the hands of other players’ wills.

Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

Machiavelli Variant
Hail diplomats,

'Machiavelli', a legendary variant of Diplomacy, will soon be made available here on vDip using Andrew Jameson's adaptation.

If you want more information about the variant: http://www.dipwiki.com/?title=Machiavelli

Feel free to discuss how to best balance 'Machiavelli'. In particular, I fear for Austria's Tyrol home center, which is bordered by both French Switzerland and Milanese Milan.
Awesome!!

For those interested, Machiavelli also has a bunch of optional rules that, while impossible to code into vdip, would make the game a ton of fun for a PBEM game. I think I have the rules somewhere in my email for anyone who might be interested in trying to get a full version of the game going.

That said, Enriador, you're on a roll! Thank you, you rock!

@drano019

Thanks a lot! @Oli did most of the heavylifting, he deserves all the praise. I literally couldn't have done anything without him guiding me every step of the way.

The advanced rules of Machiavelli are so cool; maybe one day we can have them (together with Diplomacy Points, minor powers, etc). I would sign-up for a PBEM game!

You should be able to upload your graphics, generate the territories/borders, set the countries and colors all on your own.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

1.) Remember to upload your maps to /resources using the files menu.
2.) Add/Rename the country-names.
3.) There are 2 dummy-territories. You should rename these and edit their parameters so you can use them as regular territories. If you save the map-data there needs to be at least 2 territories with an SC and an owner, with a common border-link. That's why these 2 are there.

1) the smallest should load now. There was an error with my template.
2) I need to add the icon-code for your variant. Will do this tonight.
3) For the interactive map you need a special smallmap in the interactivemap directory. It‘s the same an the normal smallmap, but with a different color for the sea-territories too.

On 3), while we are on the topic: Though the activity in variant development increased recently, which is great, I noticed, that all the new variants come with no initial support. This is probably due to the lack of any guide currently available. However, it is really pretty easy. So I will hereby try to change this deficiency:

In most cases you just need to add a folder "interactiveMap" in your variant directory and put the normal smallmap into it, but as Oli said with uniquely colored sea territories, too. This file should be named IA_smallmap.png and that's it.

To make it even simpler you can generate that IA_smallmap.png automatically. For this, just add an "interactiveMap" folder, that is empty (or at least does not contain a file called IA_smallmap.png). When you now call that map through the following URL,
http://vdiplomacy.com/interactiveMap/php/IAgetMap.php?variantID=[yourVariantID],
you should get an auto generated map file that is also stored in the directory of your variant. In most cases it is advisable to do some manual adjustments: As only the area of same color is used for detecting if a user clicked on a territory, you might want to color internal sea bodies like the Bosporus in Con or coastal areas like the space between Danish islands the same as the surrounding land to make it easier to select the territory.
If your sea territories are not selected by a clear border (with no holes!), the auto generation code will not produce a map but an error message that gives you information on the territories that are not separated. You should overwork your smallmap.png in this case or just do it all manually.

Some special rules need additional coding for the interactive map. As a rule of thumb, this is the case when the special rules change orders (e.g. transform rule) or the map appearance (warp around arrows, special unit icons (only if build icons should include the new unit images)). Most code for common special rules can be just copied from other variants, as always.

I try to add the interactive map files for variants from time to time with priority to the popular and big ones. But this gets tedious if you are working on blocks with 10 and more variants so things go very slow. I therefor appreciate your help when creating new variants.

Do you mean that every sea-territory must be enclosed by a black border on IA_smallmap? Or can we just recolor the sea-territories, call the file IA_smallmap and upload it?
tobi1 (1997 D Mod (S))
03 Apr 18 UTC
The auto generation code to give the sea territories a unique color just performs a floodfill on every coordinate of every sea territory. So there need to be a border (or just some line of pixels of a different color, not necessarily black). But you can just recolor the sea-territories by hand, as well.

Thanks for the explanation. I will give it a try with Machiavelli; it if works I will help adding it for as many variants as I can (especially the ones based on Classic like "Build Anywhere", as it's basically copy-pasting the Classic IA_smallmap).

Speaking of 'Machiavelli': all territories/borders are set! Only thing left are the custom units.

ALSO: You may know there are several official scenarios based on the 'Machiavelli' map. The first one, also the most popular, is called 'The Balance of Power' and is the one I am working on.

However there are plenty of scenarios, and since the map is identical I believe we can easily set them up! It's just a matter of adding new powers, colors and starting units, so it should be very fast.

Take a look at these scenarios and tell me what you think of them. http://sob-zine.org/PlayerAids/Machiavelli_Scenarios.html

Custom units are done.

You just need to check the variant-parameters in the "base"-setup, and the variant is ready to release.
Enriador (1507 D)
03 Apr 18 UTC
@Oli, is it possible to add different custom unit sprites for smallmap and largemap?

I want largemap units to be identical (like the ones at Classic or Machiavelli), but smallmap units to be different according to each power (like in Divided States and Canton).
Enriador (1507 D)

Oh, and it's not for 'Machiavelli', but for another variant that I will start working on soon.

Looks intriguing! Two questions:
1) Isn't the TyS supposed to be split into an eastern and western part?
2) What are the specific rules that are impossible to code in vdip? (or phrased another way: what are the limitations of vdip that make them impossible to code?)
Enriador (1507 D)
05 Apr 18 UTC
Hey @d-ice,

You made some excellent questions.

1) It's important to note that the version of 'Machiavelli' here is not directly taken from the original board game. It's taken from a version made by Andrew Jameson (aka The White Wolf). Jameson apparently was inspired by this map (https://cf.geekdo-images.com/medium/img/KUenyhshqqwvSQHpMZTojfFn2MM=/fit-in/500x500/filters:no_upscale()/pic1405572.jpg), that has the Tyrrhenian Sea as a single space. If I am not mistaken, that map is also the final version released by Avalon Hill.

From a gameplay POV, I think a unified TYN makes for more interesting dynamics between Naples and Florence, and eventually Turkey and the Papacy.

2) The "limitations" are simply a lack of native webDip.php support for some of Machiavelli's features, like Ducats (or any currency for that matter), assassinations, bribes, garrisons, etc. I believe it's *possible* to code these things in, but it's very bothersome and makes one wonder if it's worth the massive effort when there are so many Dip variants around ready to be rescued from the Great Void.

Myself, I prefer Diplomacy's beautiful simplicity, and when I want to play Machiavelli I go to Condottieri. They have an amazing community there and some cool variants.

In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.
