A newspaper in Hamburg reported two years ago that Schmidt had a hoard of 40,000 cigarettes in preparation for an EU-wide ban on his favored brand of menthol cigarettes.

Well for starters, the one borderline Communist among my father's cousins renounced his American citizenship during the Vietnam war and has been living in Hamburg ever since. At least before reunification, Hamburg had the reputation of being the reddest place in Germany. That cousin's father was the one super right wing member of my extended family, so there was obviously a certain amount of Oedipal rebellion. Although in recent years, the Hamburg cousin has been urging his daughters to emigrate back to Texas because he no longer believes that young people have any future worth aspiring to in Europe....inverted population pyramids, pay-as-you-go pension schemes, rigid labor regulations and so on.

But I actually saw notices of the article in the British press two years ago citing the Hamburg paper. I listed the cited source because saying that I saw separate articles in The Guardian and The Daily Mail seem less easy to judge.

I am skeptical of claims that a 95 year old chain smoker stop smoking to kowtow to changing conventions. What would be the point? My father took up smoking after being diagnosed terminal cancer, and I think averaged about three packs a day for the next 20 years.
