Dropping out due to life getting too busy/complicated
Hi all, I am not sure how but I have seen it before. How do I drop out of all my games if I just do not have the time for it anymore? I would hate to ruin the ongoing games my fellow players are in and would like to have a way to drop out without a penalty. Would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Question on retreats
Hello all, I haven't found a satisfying answer on it on this page. So to clarify it ones and for all: If two units bounce into one territory, does this prevent a third unit to retreat into it in the upcoming retreat phase?

Thanks for the answer! I hope this thread helps others too.

Is the ModForum still being used? I'm in no hurry, but I posted this over two weeks ago:
Subject: Can't create new game with custom phase length

I'm trying to create a game with 42-hour phases, but keep getting this error: "The phase value is too large or small; it must be between 5 minutes and 10 days."
I was able to do this a few years ago without any problem: gameID=32997

Anyone else having trouble with the interactive map?
When I click on a unit of mine, no buttons show up. I haven't been doing any messing around in the settings for a long time, and my orders are not readied. Anyone else? Help?

Nuclear strike option
In several Diplomacy game variants we have the Nuclear strike rule which allows any player to destroy any (or only foe's - I don't remember exactly) unit once in a game.

We have had to Extend a game because kaner never showed up after joining. Brisbanites might want to check to see whether he may be trapped under a refrigerator as a result of a cookie jar related accident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQe0OWZvwWo

Have you ever teach people to play Diplomacy?
My 8-year-old son knows that I play Diplomacy and sometimes even watches the situation progress in my games, but only today I registered him and explaine the rules of the game. He plays chess well, so I think there will be no problems with that.

Will we must play another 2 games?
Mittag (1396 D)
02 Jul 20 UTC
The second one of those games was a torture. Went on until 1969, but I felt like I lost it in 1963 when I didn't go to Columbia.
Procedure:

You play two games. If you tie 1-1, you play another two games. If you are tied 2-2 after those, you play a fifth game with random assignment. If there is a draw or a never ending stalemate in Game 5, USSR wins.
So is the map slightly imbalanced?
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
Why would you think that?
NATO has slightly better stats than USSR overall. I have to pick an arbitrary way to end a hypothetical fifth game so nobody keeps going until 2122 or something. I doubt it will become relevant, as all games so far have had a victor.

umbletheheep (1023 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
I'm not sure NATO is really stronger, but it is certainly more straightforward to play. Perhaps the stats reflect more wins because inexperienced players will win with that more at first.

Also, once either bsiper and Coffee decide to stop playing around and win their round, I'll be waiting. Good game AE.
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
Yeah, my impression of all stats of all variants is that they reflect which powers are easier to play for inexperienced players, but that they convey no relevant information as to which powers are actually in a stronger position
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
I mean, there are probably extreme cases, but that definitely seems like the general rule
badivan1 (1661 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
i think ussr has an advantage. i don't think the stats truly reflect optimal play
Maucat (1834 D)

In the match between me and Mittag USSR won both the games...
umbletheheep (1023 D)

USSR is the more creative and dynamic power so in the hands of a top player it is more versatile. Rather than final random game perhaps basing on the stats (what year you won would be better in the case of a tie)
umbletheheep (1023 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
So if you lost as NATO, your guy will be to win the next game faster than the opponent. If there's a tie, then do center count.
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
I don't like stats tiebreakers. A win is a win.
umbletheheep (1023 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
It's a reflection of mistakes/strong play better than power placement imo. But to each his own.
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
yeah but in a two game match up, it means suddenly you are playing about who wins the fastest
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
if one game ends 1965, and the second game is in 1966, well then the match up is already decided
Mittag (1396 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
it's a completely different game.
umbletheheep (1023 D)
04 Jul 20 UTC
Not if you win both matches ;)

I get what you're saying though. It changes the game, but it also prioritizes defense in the first game and striving to hold out as long as you can. I suppose I was looking at it more from a looking back then how it would impact the 2nd game.
bsiper (1281 D)
05 Jul 20 UTC
I think NATO gets less creativity at the start, but they definitely get the options to bounce around the USSR, never really holding down a position but being able to keep SCs
I agree with umble tho, but maybe it can't be applied here right now since the rules are set in stone. If we have the clear goal of winning and winning as fast as possible, i think it can nullify the advantage/disadvantage each power has and really looks at each player's skill
To contribute on the manner of statistics, since im too lazy to view my games on vdip, here are my stats in Conspiracy:
NATO: 120 wins, 1 draw, 18 losses
USSR: 93 wins, 6 draws, 39 losses
The point of a fifth game is that at a certain point, a win is a win and that’s what matters. I’m just planning for the possibility that there is no winner in the fifth game, an unlikely proposition given the games of this tournament so far.
Mittag (1396 D)
05 Jul 20 UTC
I don't like it if someone can play a move which will make them lose them the game but slow fashion in a slow fashion, and this can win them a tournament. If a player has a possibility of winning the game, then the tournament rules should be such that the player will try to win the game, even if it is a path which risks a faster loss
Mittag (1396 D)
05 Jul 20 UTC
let me write that again so that it is possible to read it...
