A game where I am allowed to Meta-Game? O.o
Competition between you and your friends sure is fun, but sometimes its great to team up with them and conquer the world together. Well, if your looking for a game where you can do that then look no further. Sometime next week a game will be starting where you and one friend can team up to conquer the world. It will be a WWIV variant with two day phases. All that is required is that you message the creator, me, what country you are teaming up with.

Some interesting facts:

- 4 players sold Lire last turn, 4 players bought Lire last turn, but the value raises $0.46

- Devo hold more than a third of all sold Lire and more than gman's stock doubled (gman has the second largest stock of Lire)

- cause of this and a small drop of Francs Devo is the player, who profits mostly from this turn (his RNW raised 0,99 %)

- the RNW of only 3 players raised last turn (mainly Devo's), 7 players lost some of there RNW, my own stayed on 10,84 %

- if Devo won't sell any Lire for the rest of the game, his great RNW-gain doesn't matter, but Devo won't buy much, too (due to a lack of money)

- so if Italy won't get too much SC's we don't have to fear, he'd be winning

- why should Devo hold all of his Lire now?

amisond (1280 D)
22 Jun 12 UTC
Roubles are not expensive based on VP's
Roubles are almost as much of a rip off as Francs.

I'm quite interested in watching the VPs Guaroz is no longer streaks ahead of the pack, as several investors start to catch up...
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

@ kaner I was thinking about what you proposed for the next bourse about the players of the underlying game being unaware they're boursed.
I made no comment then, because I thought it was a very smart idea that brings several advantages.
Unfortunately, thinking about it deeper, I've found an issue that may give some concerns.

I was thinking that traders should strictly observe the Bourse Deadline (IE: 8 hrs before Game Deadline) because some may take advantage for his order seeing someone in possible NMR. Yes, he would do it at his own risk, but sometime you're rather sure that a player (even anonymous!) is going to NMR. Well, not a big issue, it'd be rare, but it's better to avoid complications strictly observing DLs.
And then I thought:

Hey!!!! Who's going to tell the players to NOT finalize? This may not be an issue at the beginning if we choose KW901 or something with at least a dozen players. There's always someone not finalizing at the start.
But at the end of the game, when only 7 or 5 or less reliable players are left and alive, who will assure to traders the DLs, if the players don't know they're "boursed"?
You wouldn't know how long the diplomacy phases would last... what if all players finalize before the traders' DL and some trader didn't send his order?

Am I missing anything? Thoughts?
Devonian (1887 D)
23 Jun 12 UTC
I was thinking just the opposite. Why should the players stop for the bourse? Why cant the bourse deadline be independent from the game deadline? It seems like the bourse is, at best, loosely tied to the game. Speculation and manipulation of the price has a bigger impact on the bourse than the game itself. I would propose that there be bourse deadlines every 24 hours even during retreat and build phases.
kaner406 (2067 D Mod (B))
23 Jun 12 UTC
I would be open for retreat & build bourse deadlines, if it weren't such work getting all the results in order and the reporting them in the forum...
kaner406 (2067 D Mod (B))
23 Jun 12 UTC
At the moment:

100 Crowns = 7 VPs
100 Pounds = 5 VPs
100 Franks = 2 VPs
100 Marks = 4 VPs
100 Lire = 6 VPs
100 Roubles = 10 VPs
kaner406 (2067 D Mod (B))
23 Jun 12 UTC
@Guaroz, ideally somewhere I could simply put the results, in spreadsheet form, for players to look at would be easiest - it would also be quicker too. So that I can simply send each player the link to the game, the link to the forum, and the link to the ongoing results.
Devonian (1887 D)
23 Jun 12 UTC
@Kaner, I was speaking in terms of a perfect world, where all of that would be automated.

It seems like a big job to manage the bourse. Your efforts are appreciated.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
23 Jun 12 UTC
Mm... My concern with not knowing how long the diplomacy phases would last, is that:
- You (trader) don't know how long you can diploming-treating-dealing with your fellow traders because you don't know when the phase ends (btw, do everybody here use to sleep at night, right?).
- You could easily NMR, unless you send your order to GM as the phase starts (if you're online: you could be away or sleeping). But sending your order to GM as the phase starts implies that you made basically no diplomacy with other traders. Is this funny?
- Say there are 4 players left (still alive) in a boursed KW901 and they all live in adiacent time zones (let's say the 48 states). Now a European trader could send his order for Spring 910 at 11:00PM, turn off the PC and go to bed. No matter the phase length. If players finalize quick, when the European trader wakes up and turns on his PC, he may find the game in Spring 911 or even in Fall.

Probably there was a better way to say it in English, I apologize, but I'm sure you all got which is the problem with players not knowing they're boursed.

@kaner "... and the link to the ongoing results": Nice idea! ;)
btw, would it be somehow related to "unaware-players" issue?
Devonian (1887 D)
23 Jun 12 UTC
Guaroz, The bourse would have a fixed time frame, so the traders would be able to make deals on a set time schedule every day, so every trader would have the same opportunity to make one trade, regardless of what happened in the game. If the game progresses fast, each player will have the same advantage or disadvantage.

In real life, the stock market opens and closes at specific times, but world events happen continuously. Why not build this into a game that is trying to mimic the markets as they relate to world events?

Devonian (1887 D)
23 Jun 12 UTC
"I'm quite interested in watching the VPs Guaroz is no longer streaks ahead of the pack, as several investors start to catch up..."

Guaroz loss of VP's does not reflect his hoarde of cash. Once he spends it, he will be the distant leader in VP's again. Also, if you consider the house of cards I have in Franc's, my net worth can be wiped out to the tune of $20,000 if France falls. The same goes for gman. This would put Guaroz in the net worth leader position by a significant margin.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
23 Jun 12 UTC
@ Devo

1) Thanks for the explanation. It's more clear now. And it makes sense.
There's still something I'm not cosy with and something I'm afraid of, but yeah, it all looks logical.
We could test it, I see no big flaws ATM.
________________________________

2) Hahaha :) You'll never know how much I hope you're right !!! :D
________________________________

3) (previous message) "Speculation and manipulation of the price has a bigger impact on the bourse than the game itself."

Oh! If I'm understanding what you mean, I'd have said the opposite.

Well yes, first 2 turns it's true. All powers are equal strength and you don't have a clue of who will ally with who. So "Diplomacy & Speculation!" is the trader's must.

After that, boards events impact heavily on what happens on Market. Some example:
- Sp01. Venice takes Trieste. Lira's the best bought next turn.
- An01. Trieste leaves for Serbia. Crown best bought next turn.
- Sp02. In spite of Russia & Turkey stop fighting each other and Russia getting 2 SCs, looks like the Lepanto can beat the Juggernaut. Not good for the Rouble (and it would have not been good for the Piastre as well, but, for some dark reason, Amby bought 3,850 Pst. Mistakes happen in games, right?)
Also, England opened well & solid: the Pound rises up while Mark & Franc basically stand because nobody knows who's allied with who.
- An02. Surprise! No Jugg, Russia's cooperating with Austria, that withdraws from Galicia. Rouble rises and it's the 2nd Currency after Crown.
England allied with Germany: Mark best bought & 3rd, while Franc starts its long dropping...
- ...
- An04. WestMed support hold Spain. France got an ally! Surely will live some longer. Franc best bought. While A-I-R moves on East make the Rouble rise... and the Mark drop.... Also the Pound make bad...

In spite of speculation being what Bourse is all about, I'd say that Currencies' Values have always reflected what was going on on the Board. If there's an issue, it's that Bourse is too tightly tied to the game and this makes the market too predictable* (and boring: did anyone notice that although it's since years I don't talk to any traders I'm basically always guessing what will rise? It's since An04)

So can you please clarify what you meant?

_______________________
*predictable: That's why I like kaner's idea of using a bigger map next time. It should all be more unpredictable = more funny.
