looking for a >= 4 day game
I see a lot that I could join but they all have passwords. anyone want to create one or pm me a password?
I'd play one with you. Let's see how many are interested, and we can pick a map and parameters?

I'd be willing, as I don't mind games with longer phases.

I'm keen. 4 days is about as long as I'd like though :)

I'd be up for this .. if that was ok.
There's 5, almost enough for a proper variant ;)

I'm up for it, those shorter phase games just seem so rushed

lets give it a day or two and then choose a variant that matches the amount of committed diplomats

I would like to play this variant. In all of my years, i am yet to try it! anyone got any other suggestions?

I would also play...
One of my favorites, and we should have no trouble reaching 10 players.

I've never played a non-gunboat version of Enlightenment and succession before, or a game of classic crowded

can we agree on gunboat anon?
Ah, I assumed press. I will still play a gunboat, anon is good with me, and my other preference would be WTA.

ingebot, I would also play a full-press E&S game, there is interest. It would have to be 3+ days per phase.
bluecthulhu (1815 D)

Yeah, I'm not too interested in gunboat.
Anonymous is fine and so is the American variant.

Why would you need 4 day phases for an anonymous, no press game?

While I prefer to have more time to discuss movements, I am reluctant to join any game over 2 days per phase. When you wait 4 days for retreats and builds/disbands, each turn can run up to 12 days. That is going to kill the momentum of the game, and lead to mass NMRs. And even if you get completely committed players, you will be playing the game for the next two years at such a pace.

I wish that we could develop an feature that allowed for differing durations for movements phases and retreat/build phases. The game of Diplomacy specifically does not prescribe for a negotiation phase during retreats and adjustments phases. Players are expected to produce these orders immediately. In the online game, 24 hours is a reasonable approximation of immediately.
The Spanish site - which seems to down for awhile, sadly - has options to make retreat/build phase a different duration. In numerous games played, I've seen no issues with the feature. It would be a welcome option here.

But yes, that would be a great Option! Maybe Start a New thread in that?

It's a serious question. Why does anyone need 4 days for an anonymous no press game? Maybe there's a reason, but if there is, it eludes me. And why start a new thread to discuss the feature? Why not just do it? If it were a present option, then this game would likely be underway already. As it is you're looking for players that can invest a realistic minimum of one year into a game.

Why be a snot about it from your moderator chair? Other potential players voiced preferences and parameters. There's no consensus yet, so I'm seeking to clarify what the 4 day deadline hopes to accomplish, and to shed light on the understanding that large gaps of time will pass between seasons. 8-12 days between moves seems excessive in a no press game. Surely there is a reason.

RUFFHAUS, I'll speak to why I sometimes select games -- even gunboat -- with very long phases. Can't speak for others.

First, I've consistently been present on this site and engaged in games since I first joined. I have no reason to think I will not be here in another year or three when a game started now might finally wrap up, and so I rarely consider how long a game will run when I join it. I do consider, and I think this is more to your point, whether others that join the game will be able to keep their commitment. Now, maybe an examination of my game history would reveal my perception to be faulty, but after playing dozens of games 3+ days per phase, here and webDip, it hasn't been my experience that they have been more heavily affected by NMRs and CDs. True, in a game lasting a year the CDs might just be spaced out enough that I don't recall them once the next one happens, but again that's not how it seems to me. I think this also speaks to how bad the NMR/CD problem is in games of any duration. Unfortunately, they happen regardless, and far too often.

As to why I join such long games in the first place, there have been times in the past year that have seen me simultaneously taking 16 credits in school, working up to three part-time jobs, and playing in three bands, all while prioritizing my role as husband and father. There have been some grueling stretches. Diplomacy is not nearly as important, but it provides a great break from those things and a valued distraction from daily stress. I don't commit to press games when I can't follow through, so sometimes gunboats are my only reasonable option to have a few games going. Plus, I just enjoy them. And so, awhile back, I started joining and creating gunboat games of up to 4 day phases. Sometimes I've got time to ready up in all of them, sometimes I need the whole phase. I really don't think these have been more heavily impacted by people vanishing than short-phase games.

Aside from the problem of NMR/CD, I've found that gunboats are not nearly as affected by a long phase as a full-press game. With press, a week for retreat-build, over and over again, is indeed a recipe for lost momentum and sporadically shifting alliances.

Anyway, that's why I play them. Then again, I play just about every variation of Diplomacy I can discover or conceive. Even so, forced to choose only one set of parameters, I think my preferred game would still look much like yours. Good to chat with you, it's been awhile ;)

i like the long phases because that is how the original board game was played. messages were sent through mail, so players were forced to wait days and/or weeks for the phase to progress.

In the years I have been here, I have never really had an hour where I wasnt either checking moves or thinking about my moves. (I attribute this, to not only the phase length, but the number of games I was in, so this is a product of my own doing as well.)

I enjoy the idea that I could just casually play a game without being forced to visit the site so often. I am the type of player. I recently completed a 10 day phase game that I joined in the second or third phase. The game was filled with NMRs of players who couldnt commit to the ten day phase (including me). The game finally ended after a flaw in the map caused an undeserved win. Disregarding the ending, it was a very slow game with little to no "ready" votes, many many NMRs, but it was also a game that I had relatively unlimited (haha) time to ponder my moves. Now that the game is over, I can say it was one of the more enjoyable games. I experienced the same feeling with the only other ten day phase game I played.

Diplomacy Notifications
Hey, everybody! I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone know a way of getting notifications when you receive a message or a phase processes? Perhaps there is a way to create custom Chrome notifications or something, I don't know. Again, this is probably a long shot but if anyone has an answer, that would be great!

Huge code-update...
I've merged the vDip-code with the latest developments of the webDip-code. The most prominent feature is that you now can select games to "Spectate". These games will appear on your home-screen.

Please report any bugs here or in the mod-forum. There where many changes, so I can't promise a 100% bug-free release.. :-) But I will fix these bugs really fast as you report them...

Reliability rating
Why is the rating system so penal and thus discouraging for people to repair it??? I have literally made hundreds of consecutive moves within the time deadlines, and still I find myself in some "purgatory" that won't allow me to be in one new game at a time...It is turning me off to the site if I can't be upgraded at some point based on a 3 game mess I made a year and a half a go when my mom passed away....
