Honestly, the ranking system is kind of busted anyways. There's 2 issues I've noticed:

1) People who are force CD-ed still end up losing points when the game ends as it treats them as having abandoned the game. I've had this happen to me twice, once when I filled in a spot for less than a turn just to hold it for a replacement, and once where I left the game early as people were making accusations about me because I am a Mod, so I purposely replaced myself to avoid any theoretical conflict of interest. Lost 297 points in 2 games because the system treated me as having abandoned the game when no such thing happened.

2) There's point "inflation" of a sort. Given the system is setup so that people who take replacement positions cannot lose points, if someone were to play almost exclusively CD takeovers, they by definition cannot lose points, even if they lose. So the default for points can go up over time due to the inability to lose points. This leads to people having high point counts when there record doesn't necessarily back up why they have so many points.


That said, Chuttbugger is correct. It's a quirk of the "CD's lose to everyone even defeated players" setup.

Long story short though, I guess I'd say don't worry about points really?

You can't gain (D) points when you're eliminated from a game, I believe.

JECE is correct. (D) points cannot be gained upon elimination. vDip points can in a situation like this where a number of CDs cause a player to gain more from "defeated beats CD" than loses from being defeated.

Thanks for the insight Chuttbugger and drano! And yeah, I don't play the colonial 1885 map for points (as shown by my whopping +9), I just really like the idea of being split across the map and how it can create different negotiating tactics than we might otherwise see in standard diplomacy (imagine if everyone on ER was like a genoa or a Venice! Probably impossible to balance but would be a heck of a lot of fun).

I touched top 5 and will slowly go down since I keep joining Divided States gunboat games where I just die in the first stages of the game lol

I was moreso just surprised that an elimination could result in a gain.
