I am suggesting that we be given the option, when making a new game, of setting a shorter deadline for Retreats, and choosing whether Retreats happen within the standard turn schedule or in addition to it. Thus, for a game that resolves every Saturday, players would currently have a minimum of about seven days to write their Orders or Retreats. With the system I am proposing, we could specify:
(1) Resolves every Saturday, Retreat deadline 48 hours (inclusive), such that Orders are resolved Day 1, Retreats are resolved Day 3, and Orders are resolved again Day 8;
(2) Resolves every Saturday, Retreat deadline 48 hours (exclusive), such that Orders are resolved Day 1, Retreats are resolved Day 3, and Orders are resolved again Day 15.
I hope what I am saying is clear; I had to look at a calendar to make sure the numbers worked properly. I am happy to discuss further if this is something that is possible to implement, but I am also fully prepared to hear that doing this is non-trivial and that it simply won't happen.
I also realize that this is something of an edge case that can be fixed by player discipline. But, if the schedule can be used to guide player behavior organically, that would be preferable in many instances to having to individually chase people down.
