Notification before NMR
Is there a way to set up notifications so I don't NMR? Either an email or text message so I don't forget that turns are about to be processed.

Unrated Games
Dumb question? What's the point of unrated games? Are they meant for new players to learn the system?

[Speed Europa variant] Check Barrents Sea adjacency
In my current game (ID=58131), it says the Barents Sea can move to Serbia (rather than Siberia)

It also lists Norway as an option, though the spaces are not adjacent on the map.

A new Cold War tournament (Nexus CW6)
Hey everybody. It was about time someone organised another cross platform Cold War tournament.

The tournament will be played wherever the players agree to play. Which means vDip will be hosting games. I have made a rule set on discord: https://discord.gg/kKnAuHN6kM - if you do not like discord I will communicate via e-mail. I will post updates here.

Great new variant - Bronze Age Diplomacy
IMHO a really great new variant with many options, constantly fluctuating balances of power, both fleets and armies with power, sensible offboard movement that makes stalemates hard.

This is a good one I think

Replacement(s) needed
Going through an unexpectedly busy period at the moment and can't really pay full attention to all of my games. I don't want to keep spamming extend or pause requests so I was hoping someone could take a couple of gunboat games off my hands. Only solid positions, including one board top. DM if interested!

That's just kinda Australia. The spiders are bigger, the snakes are deadlier and the women are tougher than most men anywhere else.

I think the expectation of 6 foot beach worms is just baked into the expectations.

Holy shit....mind blown.

Hollywood director John Ford personally knew Wyatt Earp. (I vaguely remember visiting Tombstone as a child.)

https://youtu.be/gaqVgKRyiwc?t=55

John Ford is arguably the greatest director of Hollywood Westerns. Orson Welles is on record as saying that most of the "innovations" he got credit for inventing in Citizen Kane were actually stolen from John Ford's Westerns that high brow filmmakers did not pay attention to.

Additionally, just learned that Wyatt Earp ran a brothel in Peoria, Illinois. For those who are unaware, Richard Prior grew up in his grandmother's brothel in Peoria, Illinois.

Winston Churchill dislocated a shoulder after being hit by a car while crossing 5th Avenue in New York City. He apparently had looked the wrong way for traffic before jay walking. (The British rather famously drive on the wrong side of the road)

BTW, has anyone else read The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy by David Cannadine?
JECE (1534 D)

I hadn't heard that story. But honestly, maybe not on a major avenue, but its pretty easy to look the wrong way in New York City given all the one-way streets.

There are many countries that drive on the left side of the road, and that's hardly the wrong side, its just not the right side.

The original Sepoy units in British India were organized by Thomas Pitt, the grandfather of Pitt the Elder and great-grandfather of Pitt the Younger.

Thomas Pitt accumulated a substantial enough fortune trading on his private account in India while serving as Governor of Madras for the East India Company that he provided the fortune that sustained multiple generations of his family after purchasing a pocket borough that gave his descendants a controlled seat in Parliament until the Great Reform Act of 1832. Two of his descendants became Prime Minister, one married a Prime Minister and one married the sister of a Prime Minister.

@gopher This reminds me of a situation in the Croatian parliament at the beginning of the 20th century. An argument broke out on the floor and the speaker offended one of the members. The member immediately shot him down.
Threats and assassinations were a real thing until so recently. :d

Croatia had a parliament in the early 20th century?

That reminds me of a situation in the American politics at the beginning of the 19th century. An argument began between the Vice President and the former Treasury Secretary. The Vice President shot him dead. :oP

They wrote some songs about it. Like to hear 'em? Here they go.

@JECE The assassination of Stjepan Radić, if you want to read more.

@gopher You are right, it was technically the Yugoslavia parliament, but he was a member of one of the Croatian parties in it. (hence why I remember it slightly wrong).

Thanks for sharing, JohnyD! What a sad episode of Yugoslav history . . .

gopher27: Yes, Croatia had a parliament within the Hungarian half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Within the Austrian half, it seems like the Dalmatian parliament was also dominated by Croats.

The Hungarians allowed the Croats an independent parliament? That doesn't sound like the Hungarians I have known. :oP
JECE (1534 D)
21 Oct 23 UTC
I don't think that they had a choice. They agreed to this in the Compromise of 1868, just a year after the Compromise of 1867 reestablished the Hungarian parliament.

I would like to report a player in an anonymous game
Hey mod team, I’d like to report a player in an anonymous game. I can’t easily describe what happened so it would be easier if you just looked at the chat logs yourself. Needless to say, they were directly attacking a different player calling them all sorts of slurs.

This is the game link: https://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=57383#gamePanel

NMRing first turn
New game and not new missing first turns.
Many players miss their first turn in ALL of their games. They have very good position in the rank, with % of victory/draw higher than their % of survive/defeat ... of course, if they give up their games just the first turn, dissatisfied with the country they will have to play.
In my oppinion all abandoned games should count as DEFEATED. What do you think?
