So Many Toxic Players??
Is it just me, or has the amount of toxic players on this site recently skyrocketed? Over the course of just a few games, I’ve seen people shoving strange moves in each others faces like a dog that crapped on the carpet, players belittling each other, piss poor attitudes after stabs, etc. - I don’t mean to complain, but I’m also seeing how it is effecting new players and this is generally something I can’t stand. Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Crashed games in the new games list
Is there a way to get rid of the crashed games that appear in the new games list? They've been there for like a year and they keep making me think there's more potential games than there actually are.

As some of you may remember, I ran the "Around the World" tournament 2 years ago (visible on Tournaments page). I'm looking at perhaps doing it again, depending on interest. What do y'all think?

Are points important?
Clearly a measure of a players ability can be glanced through points, but what are the pros and cons of rated and unrated games? Unrated games provide a bit more of a laid back attitude and from my experience are more open to draws, but at the same time when points are at stake players are less likely to miss turns and more likely to play to the best of their ability.

Regarding vpoint gain
In the Modern Europa map in PPSC, which scenario gives more vpoints, and how would it be calculated?

a) Two nations split the map in two, with one getting slightly more SCs than the other for a solo victory in PPSC
b) A 4-5 way draw in PPSC, with my nation having about 25-30% of the map
Chuttbugger (2584 D)

Even in PPSC, a draw is a draw. A country with 1 supply center will receive the same number of vDip points as a country with 100 supply centers (if they have the same starting vDip rating, anyway). The number of supply centers you have only comes into play if the game ends in a solo victory.

The math behind it is a bit complex, but when you are the largest survivor, it approximately boils down to the intuitive answer: You’re splitting the “pot” based on the number of supply centers you have relative to the total. So if you have 1/3 of the supply centers when another player solos, your rating increase will be roughly the same as it would in a 3-way draw. If you “split the map” and end up with a solo victor at 58 centers and the survivor at 57, both players will receive points similar to a two-player draw, though the victor will receive slightly more.

It gets a little more complicated if you are not the largest survivor, because vDip rating change is calculated individually for each one of your opponents. You’ll lose rating to the players who finished with more supply centers than you, including the victor, and you’ll gain rating from the players who finished with fewer supply centers than you, including eliminated players.

It gets even more complicated when you start factoring in the other players’ actual ratings. This is why you will sometimes see low-ranked players gain vDip rating for surviving with a small amount of centers even while higher-ranked players who survived with more supply centers will lose rating from the same game.

However, in your specific scenario, the answer is nearly absolute: as long as the scoring setting is PPSC, you will gain more rating from surviving a solo victory with close to half of the total supply centers than you will from being a part of any draw with more than 2 players.

To give you an estimate of the difference, I plugged the numbers you provided into the rating formula, under the (obviously false) assumption that every player in the game is starting at the same rating. In that case, on the 20-player Modern Europe variant, you could expect to gain 130 points in a 5-way draw or 174 points in a 4-way draw. In the solo scenario, you would gain 417 points for being the victor (with 58 centers) and 410 points for surviving (with 57 centers). Again, these are fake numbers assuming everyone has the same initial rating, but they are directionally correct.

The only reason you would be better off drawing with 3 or more players is if you are an extremely high rated player and the ostensible solo victor is an extremely low rated player – in that case the penalty for “losing” to them would outweigh the larger share of points you would get from your defeated opponents. But the rank difference would have to be astronomical, far greater than the difference between any 2 real players on this site.

This is why some players dislike the PPSC scoring setting, as it encourages the "strong second" strategy - a player with a large number of supply centers is incentivized to help another player achieve a solo victory rather than assist the other countries in forcing a draw.

Should there be a setting that uses PPSC even when drawing?
I kind of agree with that, because currently PPSC only comes into play when one player reaches a solo limit.

I strongly urge people not to consider that. The rules of Diplomacy state:

"As soon as one Great Power controls 18 supply centers, it’s considered to have gained
control of Europe. The player representing that Great Power is the winner. However,
players can end the game by agreement before a winner is determined. In this case, all
players who still have pieces on the game board share equally in a draw."

The key part is obviously the last sentence. Making draws PPSC fundamentally changes that aspect of Diplomacy. Knowing that a 1sc draw nets you the same share of the pot is a big part of encouraging people to keep playing. Making it basically worthless will discourage people to keep trying.

PPSC is a garbage scoring system, specifically because of how it adjudicates solos. There are other non-draw based scoring systems that sufficiently reward small powers, but they aren't easily scalable beyond classic. WTA is probably a good standard for vDip, if scoring systems must exist.

I find that PPSC is at times good when the map is unbalanced. For example, the Colonial 1885 map heavily favors Britain; in WTA games, the opening "ideal" plays are probably to beat up britain. with PPSC, countries with low solo potential have something to play towards I feel.

That argument would be valid if PPSC applied in the case of draws, it doesn't

I was thinking about making a private game with some friends in public press (unranked); I was wondering if we would be allowed to use communications off-site as to receive notifications, without breaking site rules.

Ideas for a new world wide map
So I was looking at a few different variants and was inspired by the Modern Europe and Divided States maps. My idea is a world wide map with the same detail as both of those maps, with sea lanes of course.

Can you see who all the users you have blocked in one place?
Reason for asking, I would like to join a divided states game that is nearing full, but someone in the game has me blocked, or I have someone in the game blocked. I just want to make sure it's not my fault that I can't join the game, even though I don't think I have ever blocked someone. If you could help my situation I'd be very thankful.

The Aussies have let me down
I just discovered that there is a town in Australia called Texas. Furthermore, because it is on a state border, there are in fact two. And most importantly, Peter Sherwin was from Texas, Qld/NSW. So Australia's greatest cattle baron and largest private owner of ranchland was from Texas.
