A friend of mine and me would like to play a game of diplomacy where all player connect on Facebook or WhatsApp to communicate. We would set up a gunboat game here and then it's a regular game, just by different means of communication. Anyone interested?

Classic Redrawn
I got bothered with some of the historical inaccuracies of the Classic map - like French Corsica being painted Italian green - so I went on and redrawed the entire map.

Territory Diagram
I wonder why VDip is not using Territory Diagram to reveal the dinamics of territory occupation in time. Now it's working rather good. But for maps with neutrals it still has several bugs. We use this module on Diplomail. Please check: https://ibb.co/mFZF3o

'Edwardian' - A new variant
Greetings diplomats.

I present you @VaeVictis's 'Edwardian' - an upcoming jewel to vDiplomacy's glorious crown. 'Edwardian' is set in 1901, the start of the Edwardian Era, and represents the intrigue and tension of the period with a level of elegance and detail never seen before

Known World 901 question re rebuilt armies
The variant page says that "This map is build anywhere and has neutral standing armies that disband when dislodged, but will be rebuild if the relevant Home Supply Center is vacant and unowned during the build-phase in autumn." but looking at completed games, I don't see the standing armies getting rebuilt. Does this mean I need to always occupy my own SCs in the fall or else they turn back into neutral standing armies? Can someone explain this to me?

Mistake in Known World 901 variant
In "Known World 901" we have Principality of Kiev (short - Russia). But it's a mistake which I have fixed when I did the php-adaptation to Western Known World 901 variant. The power must be called as Kievan Rus (short - Rus). It's not Russia at all. So it must be also fixed in Known World 901 variant I think.

New Variants (yup, plural!)
Four new variants, based on Classic, will be coming to vDip!

Some of these were directly taken from the DP Judge. Others were lost in the Variant Bank for a long while.

sealanes
How do they work?
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)
09 Jul 18 UTC
The basic concept is that the original/main/center sea space remains adjacent to all of the spaces as defined by its greater (original) perimeter. Then each sealane space is subdivided into two, three, or four sub spaces, which carry conventional adjacency.

So for example,Gulf of Alaska (GOA) is adjacent to Bering Sea, Anchorage, Cascade Sea, Northeast Pacific Ocean (NEP) along with NEP NE and NEP NW, North Central Pacific Ocean (NCP) NCP East and NCP Nth, and all of the interior GOA sealane spaces.

The concept behind the sealanes was an effort to address map design issues that arose when the WW4 variant was converted from a PBEM special rules voting based victory game to a supply center total based victory game. The original game was designed to be played 8-12 years total, and did not account for a need for intercontinental expansion. What was discovered in game play after numerous games was that the map design creates impenetrable stalemates lines ringing around the continents. The sealanes attempts with some good degree of success to offset this problem.

Is this Rudi?
I've always thought the same thing could be done in places with large land masses (St. Pete in classic). We'd call them "roads". :-)

YCHTT, I think you're looking for the term "landlanes"
Retillion (2304 D (B))

The point of Sealanes is to make it harder to build stalemate lines at sea while simultaneously keeping the possibility of fast naval movements.

Landlanes would have the huge disadvantage to make it almost impossible to defend a sector during the early game. That would lead to immediate chaos and rather unplayable variants.

What could be done on land to make it harder to build stalemate lines in large variants is simply to design variants with a higher ratio of non-SCs Land Zones / SCs Land Zones.
RVG1984 (1169 D)

So sealanes allow you to move to the next territory without going through the sub pieces, basically? If some one is in a sub piece, can the sealane still be used or is it blocked?
Technostar (1302 D)

The overseer zone and each individual sealane are all separate territories, so each can be occupied by its own unit regardless of country.
Retillion. I said only for extremely large territories. Brazil would be a good example. Midwest another. Not all of them, just a few to add a challenge.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

YCHTT, I understood what you meant.

Try to imagine a starting position with Landlanes, for example in the Divided States Variant : how could you possibly conquer an opponent's nation with your very few starting units ? While you would advance towards his position, he could simply move *through* your lines and reach your territory. Lanes can only be blocked with many units, which players do not have during the early stages of the game.

As I wrote it before elsewhere (Global Press of gameID=34121), in order to avoid early stalemate lines and too large Draws, the larger a variant is, the smaller the ratio between the number of spaces with SCs and the total number of land (and coastal) spaces should be.

What we need is to add non-SC land spaces in the larger variants, and for that, there is no need of Landlanes. Sealanes have the purpose of adding extra spaces without slowing down naval movement, which was a necessity since Selanes were designed in order to allow intercontinental expansion. There is no such a need on a very large land mass, where what we need is only to avoid early stalemate lines that lead to massive Draws.
I would argue that your own example of divided states needs the same extra non-SCs without slowing the units down. I can drive from Ohio to Washington DC in a day. I'm sure an army could make it from Florida to Oregon in 6 months.
Retillion (2304 D (B))
09 Jul 18 UTC
No : the purpose of the Sealanes was to improve the possibility to expand from one continent to another one via the ocean. That has nothing to do with expansion on a 100% land territory.

Your comparison with RL is :
• irrelevant : the game of Diplomacy does not depict reality.
• incorrect : you certainly cannot "drive from Ohio to Washington DC in a day" if you have to cross a war zone.
• incorrect : it is highly doubtful that "an army could make it from Florida to Oregon in 6 months" if it has to fight all its way against enemy armies.
Well, if the unit gets stopped for combat, it happens.

But more importantly, I was just saying it would be fun to have roads or highways.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

Yes, it could possibly be fun.

At one stage I started to make a standard map with all territories (land&sea) a 'lanes' version. I split each territory's border exactly in the middle so as to show no favouritism. In that scenario there would be an imaginary X on each intersection...

I got fed up around Norway with its long coastline and multiple borders. But maybe something I might revisit one day.

^good examples of how sealanes work though.

I was going to call it ScrewStalemates

Colonial Diplomacy explored this roads concept with the Trans Siberian Railroad rule. It's never been effectively coded int the webdip software, but it was an interesting dynamic in FTF games.

The idea of land lanes might be explored in new variants if there were some reason for them. There's no real need for them on the WW4 map though. The issue on that map was continental perimeters setting up premature stalemate lines. Kaner's experiment was largely successful in addressing the stalemate line crisis, and in my opinion opened new and intriguing tactical challenges in both offensive and defensive postures.

Anonymous Games
Anonymous Games grant liars a shelter to do there worst, making abusive and absurd offered and generally making me passionately hate this game, which can lead to NMRs . Having to be out there means you have to have honor, and enables revenge. I have seen allies pitch in by hopping from one neutral territory to yhe next in the name of their promises. This site seems to be for the childish.

Replace PPSC with something rank-based?
I've put together a length proposal over on PlayDip to provide a rank-based scoring system for draws that's similar to the Carnage system used in several North American Dip tournaments today.

Looking for someone to take over my country (Not in a bad position)
Currently 13/35 countries remain and my country, Brazil, is in 8th place after some set backs with NMRs. Currently allied with the 2nd place country, Argentina, as a fight between the two of us will ultimately be the doom of our existence. Argentina has said that a substitute will not charge the alliance between our two countries.

Reply if interested in taking over.
