Anybody on the site would be interested in a league type tournament of live games on the classic variant, I'd we could get 7 players and play 7 games, the league would likely last 7 weeks. Post if your interested or have any queries or suggestions: more info to come

The ProTip Thread
This thread is for quick little tips and tricks that you've picked up while playing Diplomacy. Like this...

Never land a fleet in St Petersburg. If you can't convoy an army in (or move one in from Norway or Finland) wait until you're in position to do so. If you land a fleet there, you've set up your own blockade, preventing you from flooding more units into Russia.

Reliability Rating Issue
So this has probably been addressed many times, and will get yelled at since I am new and maybe did not read something. But I looked into it and am still confused. I have only played one game and have a RR of -100 rookie. However even when I or a friend makes a game with no request for a certain RR It says my RR is too low. How can i get it higher if i cannot join a game?

I won't say F*CK OFF: gameID=8881
A few hours before the end there was only my draw vote in (Slavic) and Norge's. I didn't expect this morning to wake up and find a 5 way draw. Not with this SCs difference.
Il Principe, Guaroz, couldn't we go for the natural outcome: 3 way draw?
Your thoughts will be appreciated.

And about you, kaug...dear kaug...

Since the number of phases played is tracked, sept 2011, you collected the highest number of phases played on this website.
over 5 thousands. I haven't seen anyone else arund here comparable with you. Roughly you add 15 phases played/day.
That would be admirable... if only you could handle it.

The matter is that it doesn't look like you can do it.
gameID=8881 is the last game I've played with you. Once again, as soon as something goes wrong with your side, you stop following properly this one and you dedicate yourself to other games.

During the game 7 times you didn't enter your orders.
Outstanding, considering it's a gunboat and it could take not more than 5mins/day.
And it's outstanding that you didn't go in CD. I could swear I've seen "missed the last phase" on your countryname only once in 959.
How could that happen???

Just 1 more notice: did you even pay attention to the game title?

Do you find it funny when the other players stop following your games?
No, it isn't. The game is twisted and it's not funny anymore.
Do you find it respectful?
No, if you join you're expected to play until the end. Thre are not computers on the other side of the screen. Respect them.
Victory is not the only way to have fun.
Sometimes I've had fun even after a "survived" score.
Please, kaug, tell me that you're going to change your attitudes.
Please tell me that you're going to play less games but you're going to play them all and continuously.

Chill man it's one game.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

Ehr... Yes Oli, but DL is a rather expert player and I guess he knew he could block him.
The issue here looks like that it's too easy work around the system. The player in question NMRed 7 times and got only 1 "Missed the last phase", so he had only 1 MP recorded on his RR.

If I had to block all players that don't put or save any order without missing the phase, I'd have to block a 20% of players here. So I couldn't basically join games anymore... there would be a blocked player in most cases.

BTW, would it be hard to change the code for "Missed Phase" from:
- The player did not log in the game during the whole phase
to:
- The player did not save any order
or, better:
- The player did not save any order or saved/finalized "all holds"
?
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
06 Aug 12 UTC
Yes, it would be hard, and besides this would easy to prevent, as you could just give some fake-orders instead of "Hold" to circumvent this restrictions.
The "block"-function is made esp. for such situations.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
06 Aug 12 UTC
yes, Oli, I'm aware about the block feature and it's really a precious instrument in some extreme cases, but I like to think it's the last choice available.
In my opinion blocking someone is never a victory for the website. Teaching someone is.

Guaroz (2030 D (B))

@ Oli, yes it would be easy to prevent, but much less easy than it is now.

Now you can be a serial-gamescrewer because you need just 1 second to log in a game (open it in a new tab - close the tab even without give a look to it).
So if you're playing 20 games and gave up half of them, 10 seconds a day are enough to screw 10 games without any penalty.

Instead, if you have to wait for the page to completely load, put in a couple of fake orders, save/finalize them, wait for the grey or green "v" to show up, and close the tab/log out, then you need 15 or 20 seconds a game to do your dirty job and it could become boring after some days.
Also, if you have a few units, perhaps you may choose to put in REAL orders, taking it just a little time-difference, because no-one wants a "defeat" that can be avoided with a few more seconds effort.

Discouraging serial-gamescrewers aside, all player would be encouraged to save some orders at their first phase-log-in, correcting or completing them later if necessary. This way also many "Oh shit! I'm 20 minutes late!" NMRs would be avoided, even with players performing only half orders, that is better than no-one.

That said, if doing it would be hard, then no point.
But it wasn't that bad idea, IMHO. :)
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
07 Aug 12 UTC
Guaroz, forcing all holds into NMR is a bad idea. There are situations (esp. if I have 1 centre left) that I want to enter a hold.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
07 Aug 12 UTC
Yes, but I believe that the problem wouldn't be to add a condition like "if the player got more than 1 centre then check if orders...".
Or more than 2 centres.
If Oli said it's hard to do, the problem must be another.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
07 Aug 12 UTC
Makes the code unnecessary complex, and that's why for such a rare issue you should use the "block"-feature.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
08 Aug 12 UTC
Guaroz, is there anything in the rules that does not permit me to enter all holds? Perhaps I wish to trick my enemies (or allies)? Holds can be used to great effect particularly if you don't want to go anywhere and don't need to support anything.
Rancher (1275 D)
08 Aug 12 UTC
agree with Gobbledydook, it is completely legal and perhaps desireable in some situations to issue orders for all holds
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
08 Aug 12 UTC
@ Gobble. Ok, true. How many times in your life did you do so? Did you do it more than once in the same game?
We could let off a player the first time of each game, if we really want to save weird people who think that "all holds" may be a good tactic.
But if you save no orders 7 times in a game, it's not a tactic: you're screwing the game. And I see it happening into half the games I play. Maybe more.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
08 Aug 12 UTC
Guaroz, Rancher, Gobbledydook,
the matter is not the "all holds" or not (by the way have you ever entered all holds in the first 2-3 years?).
The matter is that it's surprisingly easy to work around the RR system.

Oli said it's hard to change the code form
"The player did not log in the game during the whole phase"
to
"The player did not save any order"

Ok, fine, so all I can do as user is to raise awareness for the community.

Oli, you're the master here.
If that's the current solution you ask me to do I won't debate any longer.
I just want to point out that kaug is not an asshole, nor he is new. He knows what he does.
In any case, before taking the extreme measure to block kaug I'd like to have his opinion on the matter.

Unfortunately, except the game in question, I have not collected informations to sustain whether the issue is globally rare or common.
I'll take care to evaluate the incidence of those "NMRs that curiously are not Missed Phases" on my games, though.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
09 Aug 12 UTC
It was very clear from the beginning, that you can work around the RR. If you don't like your RR you can just create a new account and start again. That's a lot easier too...
It serves it purpose to teach the players the rules of good sportsmanship and let people create games that are a lot less likely to get screwed (if they choose so).

Blocking a player is not a extreme measure. You don't like to play a certain person (for whatever arbitrary reason) just block him and move on. It's easy and convenient and made exactly for that reason. So please use this.
I can't and I won't change the way the RR works, because there is always a way to work around. And the tougher you set the rules, the more you hit the innocent players.

When there is a game full of CDs and a four way draw is negotiated and agreed to, what are we to think of a player who then rushes for a tactical advantage to chase the solo as others are making no effort to block him?
