i think it is a fair startegy. Using your argument, if could also be said that you shouldn't just play one game for the first time because you only have gain and no risk

I see the most players start always by little point bets, so when finally reach more than 100 they are scared at the idea of risking the so slow gained pots. But none pretends a so prudent player must join a "Risky gambling game" of course! While it is just perfect for all newcomers with their starting 100 .

What "friend" are you referring to, RUFF? Me? 'cause I've been here for a long time... And I like high stakes games... 'cause this is a game and who cares about the points, really?

I can say this to let people not thinking about anything:
1) I am an experienced player into Diplomacy BOARD game (live) with real life friends, but none of them plays on-line, as they tells me.
2) I have a little experience into PHP Diplomacy on Facebook

It is a good strategy, if you aim for winning Dip Points - it is probably a widely accepted strategy over on WebDip. However, it isn't really used here for several reasons;
1) Nobody really cares about DPoints. People prefer to focus on their stats, which don't change depending on how big a pot any game is.
2) You wouldn't be able to play many games at a time, and most people here like to play multiple games simulaneously.
3) 100 DPoint games, especially on WebDip, tend to attract the sort of newbies who NMR instantly. It's probably because they don't really care about their points or the game, so they bet it all instantly (I'm not labeling you as one of these, just saying that's what happens). That's why most professional WebDip games have 101 point bets; so these people can't join.
4) A lot of the variants on this site are slightly unbalanced, so a lot of people won't risk 100 in case they get a bad country (Frisia in NSW for example). I know I said people don't care about DPoints here, but they still don't like losing vast amounts of them through something that is no fault of their own.
5) No-one will join a 100 bet game for the reasons above, so no-one makes them.

Apparently people who like high stakes games care about DPoints. Apparently some people like them so much that they are not willing to accumulate them over a course of time so that they might be measured for their intent. When some joker shows up wanting to play a largely untested variant, not to mention one that is flawed with a hyper advantage to one nation, which oh by the way just so happens to be the one that the joker has signer on to play.

If Lord Ravager (or Atlas for that matter) is such an ace, or in a hurry to play high stakes, then let him enter a real game and take his chances. What's the obsession with the North Sea map?
