A Modern Europe Variant
So today I just discovered that "A Modern Europe" is actually just the Hearts of Iron 4 state map slightly edited. It's nearly identical, which explains why that map is so well made that it also works as a WW2 variant. It obviously would, if it was made using a map created for a WW2 game.

Has anyone else realized this as well, or is this just common knowledge?

Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Blocking players
If you click the little smiley face in another users profile, does that block them completely? Are they unable to join games that you’ve joined, or unable to join games you’ve created? How does that work? There were a couple of players in my last game who, for all appearances seem to be meta-gaming. It’s been reported but I don’t know what, if any, action will be taken, and I’d like to avoid playing with them in the future.

SoS scoring
Sorry, I’m sure this is in the forum somewhere but couldn’t find a way to search for it. Why don’t we have SoS scoring here? Someone in my game talked about it like it used to be an option here.

Rome on Classic map?
Why does Rome on Classic have a few red pixels on the corner of its supply center? No other center on the map has this.

Also, am I analyzing the map way too much?

Supported attack on a space failed, no backfill from opponent, confused
https://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=66161#gamePanel

I’m playing as India, my last move I made a supported attack on Borneo, Borneo had no support and tried to vacate with their move, but also failed. I’m guessing my fail is tied to that somehow? I can’t understand why the move to Borneo failed though.

CuriosityDip - My Rules-Discovery Variant
I designed and commentated a one-shot variant where the players had to figure out the rules as they went along: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MYyc3sicAo

Posting this here because although I figure this can't really be run again (since people now know the rules), vDippers might be interested in the concept.

Alt Accounts
Due to the lack of a sandbox, I want to make alt accounts to test specifically the Imperium variant, but other variants as well. I noticed webDip has a relationship tracker to show alts, but I can't find a similar thing on here. Is it not on here?
Meanwhile, I'll just name the alt accounts Shadow-alt then a number so it's clear

Sandbox-type option?
Hello- I'm teaching a younger gaming club to play Diplomacy. We would love to play some variants, like those offered on this site. To streamline the game, I use the Backstabbr sandbox to adjudicate our turns, and I wonder if there is a way to use this site to do the same on a variant map. Is that an option?

I don't think there is such feature; this site only lets you play a variant. However, you can make private games, so you could simply simulate a game up to the point you need to check, and then cancel it after checking what is needed. However, the site rules forbid making more than one account per person, so it would require to either ask the mods for permission of making some accounts only for this purpose (in the Mod Forum I guess), or simply working with several people and asking them to use their accounts. Of course, after all, the rules are for the people, so I think that the mods won't be against it. And of course, I am aware, that it would be time-consuming.

However, there are some open-source adjudicators (or you could code your own; I once did and it was super-fun for me) that could be used for literally any variant that you provide them (though each of it, uses its own syntax, but I think that AI could translate one syntax to another with no effort) and since you can check a variant code for this site (there is this button in variant view), I think this won't be much work to be done.

https://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

This program allows you to sandbox a few variants.

I've never used Realpolitik or jDip, but jDip also allows you to sandbox some variants:

https://jdip.info/

Also, our sister site webDiplomacy has sandbox feature for the handful of variants supported by webDip:

Yeah, however, what I meant is that there are several projects on github, that actually would only need to be given a database with another variant (they of course ARE implemented to work on specific variant, but they read its properties from database, so replacing it, would make it work) to work. And then you could have a sandbox on ANY variant that doesn't have special rules except having different map

However of course, they will most likely not support wild variants like "Beleriand" (https://diplomacyzines.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/tf01-Beleriand.pdf) or others that require many special rules or uncommon rules like special units or units of different strength and some other (Making adjudicators for such variants with so many special rules are extremely hard to be done; trust me, I tried to make a "universal" adjudicator with every possible feature that I could think of - such project is a gigantic piece of work to be done, even though Object-oriented programming helps a lot)

Europa Renavito team game but color coded
Call me crazy, but I have an idea. Ive seen team games done on this map before and they are pretty fun. So I thought up a unique twist to it, all the teams are color coded! (Mostly)

So i went and spent an hour putting together a rough idea to what it could be. 6 teams, relatively evenly spread out, and coded to colors with a few exceptions. Afterall where do you put Morocco the only orange country?

How to use the edit map features
Where is the how to for the map info and view code button? The zip files are empty, the edit mode automatically switches itself off, and I can see map files with => in front of them that aren't showing up on the variant list. Are these maps unfinished? Did I miss something that answers all these questions when I went to the FAQ?

webDiplomacy and vDiplomacy - Thoughts
I just looked at the site rules, and I saw in some of the sections a declaration that this website is called webDiplomacy.
Does anyone know why is it? And if it's the same founder, why these two sites are separated? it just makes them both be with less players, although I'm playing in both of them, in the past I knew only about webDiplomacy.

Can anyone provide information about the process of submitting a new variant? I've looked around and quite possibly just missed it, but curious to know if there's an editing tool to tweak existing variants or if I need to start from scratch.

Password-protected games
I pretty frequently see the "New Games" tab cluttered with games that require invite codes to join. Whenever I start a game with people I know, the goal is to get everyone in ASAP, usually it starts like 10 minutes after I create the game at most. Who are all of these people who are being given invite codes to a game, but are still taking days or even weeks to join them? Is there some outside location where links to these games and their invite codes are being stored?

Why did my rating go down?
I joined a PPSC game that was nearly over, and ended with 3 supply centers. Since I bet none, why did my rating go down? Shouldn't it go up, since I won 3 points but paid 0 to enter?

Rating issues
Is anyone else having issues with rating? I just finished a game on Empires and Coalitions and dropped 150 points despite being part of a 4-way draw. Would love to hear if this is just a me problem, or if other people are experiencing this.

Higher Rated Games
I'm curious if anyone would want to run some games through this thread of people with higher ratings? There's no real way to screen for it on anonymous games, and I feel like it would make for generally better games.

If this is against some sort of equal play law on this site, no worries at all, just wanted to see if there was any interest, and if so, what maps people wanted?

I Ranked All The Variants
I thought it would be interesting to compare each map, so I wrote some code, based on the best country's performance minus the worst country's performance, then the biggest difference is ranked lower, while a smaller difference is ranked higher. I spent too much time on it, and now I have a list, check it out!
