New Divided States Map
I felt like making a Divided States map which I named “Well, rip us” (for obvious reasons). If anyone who is reading this hasn’t joined, they should as this could be really fun.

I’ve notice that a lot of people stop readying their moves—even retreats—when the game isn’t going their way any more. Is there a strategic explanation for this or is just to pout?

Two New Variants: Classic - Arabia & 1939 (My first two)
My first two variants. Let me know what you think, and how I can improve either one or variant creation in general :)

https://imgur.com/a/sNNzxOC
Classic - Arabia:
- Turkey given it's missing third Non-SC territory, Arabia. Smyrna's SC moved to Syria, with the territories being renamed to Anatolia and Aleppo
- Egypt added with a SC, and is a canal between Red Sea and Eastern Med
- Mid and North Atlantic combined, and instead Bay of Biscal is created
- North Africa changed to the following: Morocco, North Africa, Egypt
- Spain (sc) given an enclaive in Morocco, making it a canal between Western Med and Atlantic
- Red Sea <> Atlantic Ocean and Arabia <> Atlantic Ocean
- Victory condition is 19 SCs or 18 SCs two years in a row

1939:
- 3 Player global map, set in WWII
- Soviet Union start with 5 SCs, all in USSR
- Axis Powers start with 6 SCs, 3 in Central Europe, 1 in Libya and 2 in Asia
- Allied Powers start with 7 SCs, all around the world
- 12 Neutral SCs
- Victory condition is 16 SCs of the 30
- Armies can move Alaska <> Vladivostok, Australia <> Indonesia, Indonesia <> Philippines, South-East Asia <> Indonesia
- Fleets can move Germany <> Lowlands
- Eastern US, Egypt, Western Europe, Scandinavia, Leningrad and Middle East are canals

from a design point, I would include a impassable Sahara are, kind of like Switzerland or the Caspian Sean, visually slimming down Morocco and North Africa to the actually relevant and passable shorelines plus a few miles.

I am not sure wether NA and Egypt are a bit too densely packed, but it might work out.

Classic variations we have a lot, but the WWII map is new and refreshing (to me), looks really cool!
For historical accuracy one might consider making Sweden separate from Norway and neutral/impassable, which would also have gameplay effects by separating the blocks a bit more in the nordic area.
JECE (1534 D)

Another aesthetic change would be to make Spain impassable and add a Western Mediterranean sea zone. You can still connect France to the Mid-Atlantic by extending the Mid-Atlantic to Brittany. The only gameplay differences would be to allow convoys between the oceans and the Mediterranean and to slow movements between France and West Africa
@GOD I played around with Scandinavia a lot, initially having Sweden, Denmark and Norway all seperate, and Sweden being impassable. Making it impassable again would actually not effect any of the borders, Baltic Sea, Finland and Berlin would all still border Scandinavia. I think readability wise it works a bit better to have it accessable, sacrificing a bit of historical accuracy.

@JECE I initially played around with Spain being neutral, Spain being a supply centre, but settled on combining it with France for the purpose of allowing the Allies into Western Africa on the first move if they want. I think it is fairly historically accurate and provides more options for the allies
Made changes to Classic - Arabia (Now Classic - Middle East)

Version 3 of Classic - Middle East:

Implements ideas from the variants Egypt, 1880 and Fleet in Rome

- Added Persia and Turkestan, now all powers have exactly half SC half non-SC. There is now a new SC (compared to classic) on either side of the supply line, as to not disrupt current balance
- Readded Mid Atlantic, as to slow England's journey to Iberia and North Africa
- Red Sea replaced with Arabian Sea, which now borders Arabia, Egypt, Persia, Mid and North Atlantic. I tried to make this as readable as possible
- Fleet in Rome
- Greece now includes Creete, as to border the Eastern Med and allow Turkey easier access.

Enriador (1507 D)

I like these changes. I will be frank though, the vanilla Venice-Trieste border could go and won't be missed. It is the one part of the board where Allan Calhamer himself recognized as a major handicap to both of its own controlling powers (Italy and Austria); Russia having access to a new SC (being already the power that can reach the most SCs in a couple years) and Turkey having more room while largely keeping its corner position is bound to make life hell for the "Weak Sisters".

Take a look at Milan, Croatia, Florence for variants that tweak those SCs, you might get good ideas!
@Enriador I agree those are good changes, but those have already been explored in other variants with success. My philosophy was to give more opportunity to Austria and Italy indirectly, whilst preserving the proximity of the two. My hope is that with Turkey situated more towards the Middle East, Austria will be able to capitalise in the Balkans. Similarly with two fleets and an extra SC in the Med, Italy can feasibly gain an additional SC in the first year. Persia is a bonus for Russia, but also provides a route to flank Moscow, and is equidistant to England as the Iberian SCs are. England can quite easily convoy an army into Arabia, making life very difficult for Turkey or Russia
Enriador (1507 D)
20 Apr 23 UTC
I think I understand the tweaks to the southeast much better, so thanks for explaining your rationale.

Unfortunately bringing Turkey's center of gravity eastwards can't change the fact Venice-Trieste is a major diplomatic, strategic and tactical liability for Italy and Austria. Their degree of "proximity" is not replicated anywhere else on the entire board and as several variants show, powers with adjacent home supply centers invariably underperform irrespectively of regional context. If "nerfing" Austria and Italy is a goal then nevermind.
finnroberson15 (1000 D)

@Enriador Nerfing the two isn't the goal, I just believe the countries can be as powerful as the others whilst preserving the unique situation. However, you got me thinking about Italy after looking at the variants you suggested. So here's my change:

- Naples is absorbed by Rome, which starts with a Fleet
- Cagliari (Sardinia) is created as Italy's third SC, also starts with a Fleet

This gives Italy a realistic opportunity to attack France or even get Spain in 1901. I'm hoping this doesn't too much detract from Italy's unique defensive position, or make France too weak. Maybe this creates other problems I haven't considered. Thoughts?

The SC at Sardinia is a pretty cool touch. This certainly nerfs France to a big degree since Italy supporting A Venice to Marseille from F Sardinia becomes a good option that would be nigh impossible for France to properly counter without risking something. Perhaps a bit too much.
JECE (1534 D)
21 Apr 23 UTC
Venice is screwed if Italy doesn't have two armies.
@Eriador Good point, adjusting Gulf of Lion so that it doesn't border Cagliari could fix that issue?

@JECE Not sure if that's true, the Fleet in Rome variant on this website has 41 games played, and Italy is the 2nd best performing power. 1880 also has a similar setup, with Italy being the 3rd best performing power. Italy can defend Ven with a fleet moving to Apu if need be.
JECE (1534 D)
22 Apr 23 UTC
Maybe you're right. It may be more that Italy can defend the rest of its supply centers and survive/thrive without Venice, though.

"adjusting Gulf of Lion so that it doesn't border Cagliari could fix that issue?"
Wouldn't that make Cagliari too difficult to crack? It would only border two sea provinces.
@JECE That's another good point. Perhaps I'm in too deep with the Cagliari experiment, but I'll keep trying. I've made Gulf of Lion once again border Cagliari, but gotten rid of the Bay of Biscay, going back to how the Mid Atlantic previously functioned (except still connected to Arabian Sea, and not Western Med). Marseille is much more vulnerable, but perhaps that's what France needs to be more balanced. They now have access to the Middle Eastern SCs, but have more competition in Spain. Besides, Italy still has it's Venitian problem, so going after France in 1901 would be a risk for them aswell.

https://imgur.com/a/IJrZ5ey
As a side note, Marseille now joins Sevastapol, Venice, Warsaw and Budapest as Home Centres that another power can theoretically support themselves into in 1901. So yes, Marseille is vulnerable, but not uniquely vulnerable
Budapest? maybe with the classic-Army Sevastopol but not with vanilla. Warsaw ? everyone know the consequence of the ultra warsaw opening. Venice? doable but so much risky . it is difficult to imagine the diplomatic alignement necessary to give this scenario a rezal seduction. ironically the best comparaison was not in your listing Trieste italy attacking trieste is alway a real possibility in your variant not anymore. so we exchange the brutal possibility of attack of italy on austria by a possibility on france instead. the result can be interesting
Ahaha yep Budapest wouldn't fall into that list. But yeah, my point is that these exist, and you raise a good way of looking at it. It exchanges Italy's potential early attack's target from the weakest power (exc. Italy) to the strongest, which could do some nice balancing
Removed Tyrrhenian Sea and made Cagliari act as a sea territory. It now borders Gulf of Lion, Western Med, Rome and Tuscany. As a side effect Western Med now borders Ionian Sea.

What’s up with Sicily?
@GOD not sure how to clearly show it, but I'd like to make Sicily impassable such that Rome borders Ionian but not Western Med, and Cagliari vice versa.
GOD (1850 D Mod (B))
24 Apr 23 UTC
Why not just make it passable as a separate non-SC territory
@GOD Was thinking about it overnight and settled on exactly that, so I've added the Straight of Sicily to break the area up. My only worry now is that I'm not sure Algeria and Sahara will play nicely with the Main Stalemate Line. What I'm trying to do is make the MSL run through LYO, WES, SOS and Sah, putting Algeria on the Western side. However I'm pretty sure the Eastern side is actually able to break through and grab Algeria in the current version, so might change have to change how Africa works, not sure...

https://imgur.com/a/sjc3kdh
I took a step back from the Cagliari idea to figure out what the goals of the change were, and if I could achieve them with less drastic adjustments. So I've removed Cagliari and readded Naples to make Italy geographically unchanged (Rome still starts with a fleet), but left the Tyrrhenian Sea out and instead the Straight of Sicily is the 7th Mediterranean sea province. The Western Mediterranean now stretches from Rome/Tuscany to Spain/Algeria. So now Italy can still reach Spain in 1901, but can no longer launch a 2 pronged attack on Marseille.

I've also reworked the borders in the Middle East to make it feel less sparse, by connecting Aleppo to Ankara and Egypt. Now Turkey can reach two Neutral SCs on it's first move, which may be too powerful, but my hope is that the Aleppo army could be used to counter Russia instead. A juggernaut might be far too powerful is this version

Several years ago, I played a Dip game that I could not fully recall. Not the people I played with, the power I played as, or the exact changes to the rules. I know I myself was ever able to, but some relatives did when they were in school. But perhaps some of the older players here played diplomacy in their history classes. I'm curious if anyone here has and if they have any cool stories to go with it? And maybe it's still used as a learning tool today yet even.

How do excused NMRs work?
So on a game I was playing in, it says something around the lines of "1 excused NMR / regain after 5 turn(s) / extend the first 1 turn(s)". So it leads me to believe that you get an excused NMR back after 5 turns, and wouldn't go into civil disorder.

What they won't see is a wide variety of bodies, at least for each class. The Barbarian is strong and muscular for their position within the Diablo 4's five classes. The Sorcerer/Sorceress class looks strong enough to be able to lift books and wands, but they're not nearly as lean and athletic-looking like the Rogue.
