Looking for someone to replace me
Hello, I recently joined a Europa Renovatio as Sweden but recently I’ve been losing interest in it and don’t really feel like playing it al that much anymore but I also don’t want to hold up the game by not putting in my orders so I was wondering if anyone would like to replace me? We’re only at around the 3rd diplomacy game and you should be able to view it by clicking on my profile

Listing pronouns
One of the pitfalls of online Diplomacy I fall into is that I often don't know the genders of my fellow players and get the pronouns wrong. As far as I'm aware, the site doesn't yet have a feature for us to list the pronouns we use. Maybe we could all start listing the pronouns we use in our profile quotes to cut down on the confusion and ambiguity? I went ahead and put mine there.

I just use “they” or “them” most of them time. But it’s not the worst idea.

Alex.noggle, do you mean your pronouns are they/them, or you try to use they/them for other people as default?

Fake Al, As someone who has been (and still is) often misgendered on this website, I think this is a great idea.

They/them is already a default way of referring to people whose gender you are unsure of, and is a decent stop-gap in the mean time.

But yeah, putting it in your profile if it's of concern to you works pretty well.
Macca, I was saying I use they/them for people I don't know. I'm a he/him (just added it to my profile).
I recall she/her is the usual way of referring to a country/state, but I may be wrong and it is not used like this anymore? So to play safe I am also using they/them.

Maybe this is not a problem for me because the feeling I give myself is that I am referring to the power but not the player.
Fake Al (1747 D)

Definitely this up to the individual player. For me, I try to use they/them, but I often find myself slipping up. So, I know this would at least be helpful for me.

Me it, you should call, uncertain of my sex, if you are. Hrrmm. Uncertain too at my age, I am. Yrrsss.
I find myself accidently using he/him for people, but they/them is what I usually use. And for countries I use they/them or she/her. I love the idea suggested by Fake Al. Logistically, how would you suggest that be done?
CYFI (1927 D)
04 Jun 21 UTC
I think it would be best to have something similar to the vPoints ranking. Ex for "Baron of Kirkhold-Uttgart (1000V)" we could have "Baron of Kirkhold-Uttgart [they/them] (1000V)"
CYFI (1927 D)

I do not think from a technical standpoint this would be overly complicated to implement, but I do not understand website/cloud related coding very well

That question about pronouns and supposedly misgendering is highly political. I estimate that it has no place here.
What's more, you are only considering it from an English-speaking perspective.
Fake Al (1747 D)

I'm not really sure what this has to do with anything political. Could you elaborate on what you mean by only considering an English-speaking perspective? It just seemed reasonable since communication on this site is through English.
If it is or isn't political in an inherent sense might be hard to objectively define, but it's hard to deny that gender identification hasn't been politicized in the last couple years (Jordan Peterson et al.).
mouse (1825 D)

There's nothing political about it, it's simple civility. Same thing as calling someone by their name, and not continuing to use an incorrect one if such is pointed out.

I'd back CYFI's suggestion as long as any such display system was strictly opt-in (ie. there remained options both to not choose anything and not have anything displayed regardless of if something was chosen).

Something being “political” and something being “a political issue” are not the same thing. Let me clear in when I say I completely agree with your point regarding simple civility and the respect for others, but gender identification is, rightly or wrongly, a political issue in any parts of the world.

This isn’t really a matter of gender identity. It’s more that we often don’t know who we’re talking to. Most Internet forums let you list your gender to try to cut down on confusion and miscommunication.
Fake Al (1747 D)

And, again, my suggestion is just that you can list what gender you are, if you want to, in your profile quote/comment. It's a feature we can already make use of under account -> site settings.

it pains me greatly that a question of basic human decency continues to be a matter of political debate, but such is life. the profile quote seems like the best option in the interim.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

@ belCavendishNy :

What do you mean by "a question of basic human decency" ?

Would that be something like not using a pronoun that a person has chosen for himself despite his sex ?
For example, refusing to call Brandon "Madam" because he imagines that he can decide to be a woman and that he should be called Brenda and be referred to as a woman ?
Fake Al (1747 D)

@Retillion That’s an issue that isn’t relevant to this discussion. This is an issue of: most of the players here don’t know each other in real life. We don’t know each other’s sex/gender. A lot of players will refer to others as a he or she without actually knowing, which can lead to unnecessary confusion or miscommunication. A lot of people use the neutral they, which is a solution, but not everyone does. Like I said, putting your gender in your profile is something a lot of Internet forums do. I’m not proposing this for any reasons of “wokeness,” so we are discussing two separate things. We can set up another thread if people want to discuss gender identity :)

Since almost all players here are playing under relatively anonymous user names, the notion that it's a necessity to use the correct pronoun is laughable. Proper pronouns are something else altogether. If a players wants to be known by name, or sex (gender refers to language, not biology or even identity choices), the they can make it know. The current profile structure allows for enough customization to provide this information individually already.

I come here to play Diplomacy; RUFFHAUS 8 pretty much says it all - I'd only add that the suggestion that the preferred form of address can be incorporated into the username. So "Hi Fake Al" seems reasonable
Chumbles (1380 D)

Hmm - to be clear, I am hostile to the totally unnecessary programmatic inclusion of a preferred pronoun:
"Chumbles [they/them] (1000V)" looks awful

If you're fussed, gender assignment can be included in the username
"Mr Chumbles (1000V)" but I don't want a gender!

In game use the country that said player is playing as. In forum use the username.......... Honestly, is this really an issue?
Wow........

In a game where talking to, and referring to people is as important as it is in Diplomacy it seems like a very weak point to say that we don't use everybody's real name so we should disregard their identity and use whatever pronouns we have arbitrarily decided to impose on them.
A lot of forms I've seen and have been in have included the pronouns of people on their posts for ever. Under the name, under the pfp, or after the name. Wherever it's been I've never seen anyone actually that fussed about it being there. As long as you have the option to opt out and not put anything I feel like including someone's pronouns near their name is a very minimal effort way to make communicating far easier.
kevdog8 (1780 D)
07 Jun 21 UTC
We do have anonymous games as well, where you won't see the username. I agree with the suggestion here, but it is trickier than you think. We'd want it to display Austria (anonymous) he/him as well as Austria (kevdog8) he/him, depending on the game.

Random Idea for variant
I guess this would be tricky to code, but how is this idea for vDip?

During a build phase and where a power has available build capacity, any unit sitting in a supply centre may be boosted by a power of 1, ie, doubled. This unit will require twice the normal ongoing supply maintenance.

VP
Kinda curious on VP... I understand that the gains are lesser as one gets higher, but how does one player (for example) get to over 2000 with under 12 total games and only 1 win? I know its not that consequential in the grand scheme of things. but as I get to a moderately respectable total, the vp gains from a win or draw seem trivial and disproportionate to lost vp when losing. How does VP calculations actually work?

Dropping out due to life getting too busy/complicated
Hi all, I am not sure how but I have seen it before. How do I drop out of all my games if I just do not have the time for it anymore? I would hate to ruin the ongoing games my fellow players are in and would like to have a way to drop out without a penalty. Would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Question on retreats
Hello all, I haven't found a satisfying answer on it on this page. So to clarify it ones and for all: If two units bounce into one territory, does this prevent a third unit to retreat into it in the upcoming retreat phase?

Is the ModForum still being used? I'm in no hurry, but I posted this over two weeks ago:
Subject: Can't create new game with custom phase length

I'm trying to create a game with 42-hour phases, but keep getting this error: "The phase value is too large or small; it must be between 5 minutes and 10 days."
I was able to do this a few years ago without any problem: gameID=32997
