Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Big Hitters vDip game
I'm interested in creating a new game for players with 2000+ vDip points. Password protected.

If you meet this criteria let me know here that you're interested. Once we know how many players, we can decide which variant etc.

Sea Lanes Proposal/Discussion
See thread.

My fault for not understand this fully until it screwed me up, but Generic Sea Lane (GSL) south and GSL north border each other? Seems to me you'd have to move GSLs > GSL/GSLe/GSLw > GSLn? I guess it makes sense that you'd be able to move from any point in a sea lane to any other point in it, but given that GSLn and GSLs (or west and east) don't really appear to border each other on the map, and that it's incredibly difficult to chase down an enemy fleet, even if you outnumber them 4 to 1, it doesn't seem like the worst idea to make those types of sea territories not border each other?

That's the way it was designed, and I believe it is clearly stated in the Sealanes rules on variants that incorporate them. I'll let others debate the merits or demerits of it.
CBro27 (1039 D)
Fri 04 Sep UTC
I'm sure it's clearly stated and that it was intentional. My fault for not being aware of them. I'm just curious whether people think its the best system.
ScubaSteve (1367 D)

I think it is a good system. It makes the central sea lane (unavoidably) more important than the other ones. If the other sea lanes had movement restricted further, the necessary imbalance would become more pronounced.

That said, I don't think that there is a huge difference in the resulting gameplay.

I find sealanes to be unduly complicated. I used a similar concept, high seas provinces, in Dawn of the Enlightenment. These are in effect stacked ocean provinces, all adjacent to each other, as well as neighboring provinces. No master zones.
CCR (1809 D)

Dave, the stacked nature of HS makes them uncuttable, right? If so, then no good. A move is not always a move; sometimes it's just a poke. And it's a very important feature of the game mechanics

The first post should have said “Sea thread”

No, CCR, other than the special adjacency properties, they function as normal water provinces. Support can be cut and a fleet can be dislodged.

Dave, I had the rules of the first playtest in my mind, the one I actually played. THat is, if i remember them correctly...
CCR (1809 D)
Sat 05 Sep UTC
Would you recommend bringing the HS concept to any existing variant in vdip, with the necessary adptations on the whole sea design, not only in adding the stacked spaces?

See, the Sea Lanes came to popular attention after they were brought to WWIV ; the same could happen to HS ;)

By the way, the SL rules as explained in https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=95 are rather simple, written in two topics occupying a total of four lines. The rest is examples.
David E. Cohen (1000 D)
Sat 05 Sep UTC
Yeah, CCR, those 1st playtest rules were totally different. Not what I am talking about now.

Modifying a variant would be up to the creator/adapter of the variant. Sealanes work, but I do not see anything that sealane provinces can do that high seas provinces can't do more simply. I just don't see the overseer zone concept adding any value.

Sea lanes greatly favor a powerful country with lots of fleets, who is playing quite aggressively. Defense is extremely difficult in that system. I realize that it was designed to break stalemates at choke points, but I worry that it goes too far in favoring the attacker over the defender, and in making it ever easier for "the rich to get richer".
ScubaSteve (1367 D)
Sat 05 Sep UTC
"The rich getting richer" is just part of diplomacy. The alternative is stalemates. The only way to avoid the rich getting richer is to make stalemates easier. It is a zero sum game in that regard.
David E. Cohen (1000 D)
Sat 05 Sep UTC
A legitimate concern, though I believe aggressiveness should be rewarded.
The fluidity of movement gained through the use of high seas provinces can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of provinces which are "stacked".
