Territory is a supply center on the smallmap, isn't on the big map.
Am I going crazy? I'm looking at the Africa variant at https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=83. As far as I can tell, on the smallmap, the Uganda territory is marked as a supply center, while it isn't on the bigmap.

Territory graph
Here we got a "Territory graph module" which can be seen after the game finished.

The problem is that I can understand how to make it work with variants where we got additional powers (neutrals, upc, etc). With variants in which all powers are playable all is good. Please help... cause it's our common work to do WD better!

Not able to choose SoS scoring
When I create a game, I can only choose from WTA and PPSC. Here (https://vdiplomacy.com/points.php#DSS) it says that SoS scoring is available and PPSC was discontinued. This doesn't seem the case. How can I choose SoS for my game?

In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Variants to Port to webDip
I won Zultar's (webDip co-owner) New Year's prize, which is getting to pick three variants, of which they'll pick one (if possible) to port over. I don't play many variants, so I'm asking the experts:
What are three popular, stable variants that don't have much—if anything, in terms of special rules, (basically nothing that involves messing with the adjudicator, since it is a big, scary, complex bit of code)—that you would want to see included on webDiplomacy.net?
G-Man (2293 D)
Thu 09 Jan UTC
1-Modern Diplomacy: Best variant in terms of map, balance, and size, but has the Build in Any Supply Center You Own, or “Build Anywhere”, rule, which is a must (shouldn’t be too difficult to code though) — and a great rule for many variants (for the future)

2-Classic Crowded: Super cutthroat, and also fun-sized

3-Fantasy World: Nice to be out of Europe sometimes, and the two-island concept is fun. And also nicely on the larger size, but not so large that players are more inclined to miss moves, or that it becomes impersonal

There are a of great variants with one or two almost standard special rules, like Build Anywhere, having standing neutral armies that disband when attacked with support, or being able to transform unit types when on a supply center, so you are really limited
Enriador (1507 D (B))
Thu 09 Jan UTC
Three variants I enjoy that don't mess with webDip's adjudicator at all:

Canton: https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=108

Maharajah: https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=74

War of Austrian Succession: https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=117

I guess one thing that would be helpful is a list of variants already exist on webDip:

The Ancient Mediterranean
Classic - Chaos
Classic - France vs Austria
Classic - Germany vs Italy
Fall of the American Empire IV
Modern Diplomacy II
World Diplomacy IX

Known world was on the site for several games, but kept crashing things. (I don't recall why, but it was either the transform or neutral armies.)

Build anywhere capacity is present already, although I'm not sure how easy it is to add to new maps.
David E. Cohen (1000 D)

Thanks for the Maharajah's plug, Enriador. With the simplified rules, the only thing not map-specific is Chaos style builds.
CCR (1657 D)

Base the choice on facts.
Among the most played maps (games X players), we find, tofhe top three of all time, and the top one "hot" variant:
- Fall of the American Empire: Civil War (2 players, 1572 games) (base map already exists in webdip!)
- Known World 901 (15, 141) (once implemented, pending fixing though, so not a good candidate)
- Duo (2, 1009) (a great addition to webdip's 1v1 scene!)
- Europa Renovatio (13 active games, 36 players) (the state of the art of big variants! The map of the year 2019.)

If webDip is to get another 1v1 variant, nothing beats 'Cold War'. No special code, uncommon setting, nigh-perfect balance.
tobi1 (1956 D Mod (S) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Unfortunately for webdip's exclusive users, we use a different code for the order log which can easily extended by variants. All variants the change the order log are based on the adjusted code. In their form here on vdip they do not work with the webdip's original order log code and are there for disqualified as 'unstable'.
Popular variant adjustments that use vdip's order log and are therefor per se excluded are
- different unit names
- neutral units
- new order types like transform
- fog of war

From the named variants so far this excludes at least
- Europa Renovatio (Transform)
- Duo (Transform + Neutral Units)
- Known World 901 (Transform + Neutral Units)

@ tobi, Super helpful! I had talked to jmo about the Known World instability on webDip ages ago, but couldn't remember exactly what it was.

@ CCR, is known world getting revamped in such a way that it would work in webDip's codebase? Or is it getting fixed some other way?

@ Enriador, Perfect. I've been interested in trying Cold War for a long time, alhtough haven't got around to it. It was one I was going to ask about.
G-Man (2293 D)
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Known World is high on my list of great and fun variants, and I would have mentioned it if not for those special rules.
G-Man (2293 D)
Fri 10 Jan UTC
It would be worth fixing for sure.
kaner406 (1364 D Mod (B) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
What about the western world 901? That one doesn't have the transform option or the build anywhere rule and it should be stable
kaner406 (1364 D Mod (B) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
*sorry, it has standing armies.

I'll make a list shortly.
kaner406 (1364 D Mod (B) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Maharajah - has a convoy on river rule that disqualifies it.
kaner406 (1364 D Mod (B) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
So here are a selection of variants that don't have (or only have very minor changes that should be stable with webDip). Going through this list I realise just how much variety we have here at vDip!!! Having said that, it was really sad to have to move past Atlantic Colonies, Greek Diplomacy or Fog of War because those variants would just be so cool to implement. Anyway, I've stared the variants that I think would make a good fit on webDip - happy nominating! :)

The problem is the way the orderArchiv works on vDip. All other parts of the code can be changed by the variant-code, but not the orderArchiv. This can't be fixed by the variants, this needs to be changed in the webDip code.

The easy solution is just copying the OrderArchiv.php from vDip to webDip. But a better solution would be checking that code and rewrite the file completely. The vDip-code is not really optimized and made a lot of memory-issues. That's why it shows only the last 20 turns of data.

@Kaner406 Why is World Diplomacy X (https://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=129) not on your list? It's compatible, right?

David E. Cohen (1000 D)

Kaner, Maharajah's with the simplified rules does not have river convoys (just the rivers for movement, which should be fine) and the build rules are plain old build on any owned dot, not the modified version of the original, so there should be no coding issues.

By the way, I have been perplexed for many years as to why people call the variant "Maharajah" when the actual name is "Maharajah's". I do not know who started that, but I would like to thwack them upside the head! lol
Enriador (1507 D (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Edwardian has a special rule: fleets in Gibraltar can convoy. Unlike Maharajah's convoys (sorry David) it is essential to balance.

In any case, yet another 20th century European variant for webDip sounds a bit too much given how conservative they are with new maps.
Flame (1052 D (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
I advise "1898". - Completely new game-format. Players will like it!
But with FoW it is even more interesting...

Enriador - I missed that, thanks.
Flame - 1898 is also a favourite of mine at the moment, especially with the FoW on it.
David - sounds like the simplified rules the variant should be easy enough to port across.

I'll update the list to include WDX and Maharajah's, and remove Edwardian tomorrow ( unless someone beats me to it).
tobi1 (1956 D Mod (S) (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Coast convoy is a really simple adjustment. That might be okay for webdip's admins.

As it was mentioned: Atlantic Colonies could be a candidate, too. It just has a different map and some small adjustments for its drawing routines, if I did not miss anything else.
David E. Cohen (1000 D)
Fri 10 Jan UTC
And for those so inclined (blech - lol), Maharajah's does have stalemate lines, though they are somewhat less common and harder to form than those in Standard. There has been some analysis performed, which can be found on the variant home page.
David E. Cohen (1000 D)
Fri 10 Jan UTC
Regarding Gibraltar in Edwardian (and some other variants): Why not rename it 'Strait of Gibraltar' and make it a normal sea province? Is it that important to have army access in the space?
Enriador (1507 D (B))
Fri 10 Jan UTC
@David, in Edwardian's case (and most similar variants with a convoy-able Gibraltar) there is also a French army in Algeria and/or a neutral center in Morocco. Allowing France's armies to swing around its natural spheres in Africa and Spain is key, or otherwise the fleet-heavy British (which starts with F Gibraltar) would have too much of an influence over their French neighbors. That's the theory, anyway.

Atlantic Colonies has been added (I mistook the island rule)
World Diplomacy X has been added

@oli and/or tobi, I didn't see the file mentioned above and ordersarchiv.php, but I see something by the same name referenced in https://github.com/Sleepcap/vDiplomacy/blob/master/board/info/orders.php

Is this the file that would need adjustment/optimization to be fixed to show all order history when being ported over? Also do either of you know if there's anything special in the game engine to allow unit transformations or is the only problem with that on the base code the way orders are displayed in the order page? I'm not super opposed to fixing this all up to work on the main branch (it wouldn't be quick), just want to make sure I grasp the full issue first.

It's just the file "\board\info\orders.php".
All variants (with 1900 as the exception) work just fine and have no special requirements but need the new "\board\info\orders.php".

But as I said.
It needs some better coding, as this is really more of a hack.

Hello, I’m new here and have been out of pbem Diplomacy for awhile but I would love to get in on the next game of the 1600 variant here. Is there a way I can sign up for a game starting in the future? How does it work around here?

Thanks for any help.

How do points work?
I am confused on points. I know that there is 2 types. The points that allow you to play x amount of games. And the points that show how good of a player you are. How does the whole bet thing work?

Rating question
Hi! New to forums and fairly new to this game, I was wondering how the rating system works. I understand generally that we gain points for draws and solos, and lose them for defeats and survivals, but how is it determined how much we gain or lose?

Oli won.
On Imperial Civilization's off-topic thread (link inside), there was a brief stint of Second to Last Person to Post Wins. Now that the thread is closed, Oli won.

Lose less points when you replace a player?
Should we really lose as many points when let's say. You replace a player who is in a decent position. Only to upon entering the game automatically start in a terrible position. And then lose 20 points in a game you had 0 chance of surviving in. Should you really lose those 20 points? What If you lost less points when replacing a player to make it less damaging when you start in terrible positions. What you guys think?

The IST province in modern Europe
It appears that there are two IST provinces (Istria and Istanbul). For Istria, that doesn't look like Italy's modern borders, especially as it removes Slovenia's existing coast in today's world.

Improving Fog Of War
Fog of war applies to a few maps, classic, 1998, and such; but it seems like a simple add in. How hard would it be to get FoW as a setting rather than variant property? I would think there are many maps and games I would like to try with it, but it's only on a few things. There are also some variants like Rat Wars, that can only be done in FoW. Just wondering if this was a possibility?

Was the Munich Agreement a British diplomatic coup in 1938?
Neville Chamberlain died on 11/9/1940. Chamberlain's brother had won the Nobel Prize for Locarno, which has explicitly stated that the UK viewed Germany's Eastern border open for revision and was only committed to defending Germany's Western border. Other than getting Hitler's signature on an agreement that he then violate in less than 6 months, I see no other way that Chamberlain could have gotten a treaty with Poland ratified or instituted peace time conscription in a democratic society.
