Greek Dip Build Problem
Is the 6p Greek map broken?
I have 7 units and 9 SCs, two of which are open for builds, but I'm only getting build options for one of them.

I'm only getting options for one build though. It's like it doesn't recognize Corinth as an open center

Face to Face play in what seems like forever...
So I've finally convinced my gaming group to have a go at Diplomacy, and i have to say I'm looking forward to doing this thing again after what seems like forever. Only problem is they are all newbies to the game. Any advice from folks as to how to introduce Diplomacy to gamers (who haven't played Dip) before?

Adjucation bug. Can it be fixed?
This move seems to be adjucated wrong. Support shouldn’t be cut from where it is going into if I understand the rules correctly. Armenia supported move from Rumani to Sevastopol, but it was cut even though Sevastopol is the target.

Workaround to "forced" ready
In rulebook press, part of the idea is that for retreat and builds it forces you to ready up. However, simply by then pressing "not ready", the order changes to "saved". Is it possible to promote the original idea of this press type by making the state of "not ready" equal to "no orders received"?

The wanton disregard for the lives of the men in their care by the generals and posturing, jingoistic ruling classes; the unbelievably punishment of the ordinary German people; ensured that the conditions were ripe for the kind of demagogue who could use the conditions createdby the Treaty of Versailles to promote a 'big stick', propagandist, minority hating climate that made Hitler inevitable.

Lest we forget

Yes, another on of, err. me?

"The political object is the goal, war is the means of reaching it, and the means can never be considered in isolation from their purposes."

Speak softly and carry a big stick.
Chumbles. I served my country as one of the elite: a United States Marine under Ronald Reagan. My father served in the Navy in the early 60s. My brother was a sailor in the early 90s. The service is in my family. I've seen war. I've experienced its insanity. But Armistice Day celebrates the *end* of the first great War and veterans day remembers all of us who served. Using them to further a political agenda makes me want to retrieve my service revolver from storage and hunt liberals. And that is no small feat as I refuse to have a firearm in my house.

That is not correct. Armistice Day celebrates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, on November 11 1918 at eleven o'clock in the morning. World War I continued on other fronts, and ended in 1923.

@YCHTT: There's no question about the honour and respect due to those who served their countries in various wars. I'm English; all my male antecedants including my father, both grandfathers served as volunteers in WWI and WWII. And they all volunteered at the outbreak war. My mother's father was at the Somme, wounded, invalided out in '16... The other grandfather was at Gallipoli; of my great uncles five out of seven died in the trenches. My father fought as a Royal Engineer, who mined roads and blew bridges in the face of oncoming German troops in the retreat to Dunkirk. He was then shipped out to the Desert war trying to keep up with the advancing 8th Army - rushing to catch up with them and behind the retreating troops, drilling for water in between . I am intensely proud of them. My family are cockneys, as am I. Our house was partly bombed out in the bliz; and there were food shortages in this country until 1956. I still have my ration book, which Mum had to use...

My comments are aimed at the causes of war not those who served. In the UK it's called Remembrance Sunday and encompasses all conflicts in which our armed forces served.

Chumbles, that's a great family story to share with us, and thanks for doing so. How about sticking with something like that next time instead of the trite hyperbole, suggesting that anything going on in contemporary times is akin to the rise of reckless nationalism, Nazism and imperialism preceding the 20th century world wars. It's not only baloney, but it's disrespectful to those who served and suffered those times.

Retillion, you might want to elaborate on your offered comment concerning the end of WWI. Ican only speculate that you're referring to Russia. The Russian Revolution(s) are somewhat independent of WWI even if they occurred concurrently/overlapped. By 1918 all of the major participants had stopped fighting each other. England, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire and Russia had all stopped warring with one another. Russians fighting other Russians, really doesn't amount to World War anymore.

When talk of facsisim erupts it is important to remind that the three fascist countries were Germany, Italy and Spain. Bulgaria and rumania can be included if minor players are noted. To address the current or previous American administrations as Fascist or dictitorial is specious and obtuse.

The fault of the 'Great War' was due to the errant belief in monarchies as a government system. Here in the United States the republican system of federal government and the written constitution we have has proven the superior system. All others are mediocre or wanting.

Brad, I am nearly speechless. I cannot agree that your country, going by longevity of institutions comes up short against our parliamentary monarchy. The power of the executive in the UK is less than in the USA. But here as well you see politicians of both sides pushing more and more to factionalism and less and less of that collegiate sense of responsibility that underpins "government of the people, by the people, for the people,...". ALL the people ...

"The fault of the 'Great War' was due to the errant belief in monarchies as a government system." I believe I pretty much made that point myself... My comments are aimed at power hungry politicians of ANY stamp. I cannot tell you how furious I am at the misrepresentation of facts in the UK that the political classes use on a regular basis to get their way.

Watching the news and the recriminations of all the politicians here over Brexit...

Of course it's really the fault of all those stupid bastards who were too idle or intellectually challenged to take the time to learn the basics of how our industries and services functioned and assess the dysfunctional impact on our already fragile economy leaving the EU would have. Instead, in spite of all experience to the contrary, they believed what politicians were saying. They're still doing so, they're blaming the politicians because they're too morally bankrupt to blame themselves. To paraphrase ...

Democracies require effort and a sense of civic responsibility to make them work; a commitment to look at all arguments, views and to learn to weigh and judge them. Sadly, the evidence is very much that that effort is beyond a lot of the electorates in both nations. I believe in less government, more functions of the executive devolved to local government here and the states in the USA. The accretion of power into fewer and fewer hands should, I'm arguing, be a matter of concern.

We are getting the Brexit we deserve. You have got the President you deserve. But even I would be prepared to go to war in order to protect our democracy; the electorates have the right to make stupid decisions; all I'm arguing for is a corresponding concern for making reasoned choices.

That was what my forefathers fought for... I asked them and I am credulous enough to believe them.

After the hostilities ended in Western Europe, World War I continued :

1° In and around Russia between the Red Russians and :
• the White Russians ;
• many local armies of governments who fought without success for their national independence like Ukraine, Bielorussia and many more ;
• Georgia (which was independent between 1918 and 1921), Armenia (which was independent between 1918 and 1920), Azerbaijan (which was independent between 1918 and 1920) ;
• armies of countries who fought successfully for their national independance : Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania ;
• Poland and Romania who fought successfully to achieve substantial territorial gains ;
• Yugoslavia (aka Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until 1929), Germany, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, the USA, the United Kingdom and several parts of the British Empire (like India and South Africa), Canada, Australia, Mongolia, China, Japan ;
• volunteers from many countries like, for example, Sweden ;
• I may have forgotten some other belligerants.
The last fights of the Russian Civil War ended in central Asia in 1923.

2° Simultanouesly, the war with Turkey involved : the Turkish National Movement, the Ottoman Empire, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Greece, Italy, France, the United Kingdom.
The Turkish War of Independance was ended with the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July 24 1923.

But the world war ended in November 1918 unless you feel that WWII was WWI part deux.

The government that governs least, governs best.

That said. Our system of government was set up to encourage fighting amongst itself to curb the ambitions of those in it. The fight between Trump and the ruling class of America would be applauded by the founders. Of course they had their squabbles: Jefferson vs Adams, Hamilton vs Burr, Burr vs everyone.

Getting back on topic, it is really interesting how well Diplomacy abstracts and simulates WW1.

Basically the theaters and regions ( like Galicia, the North Atlantic, the stalemate of the western Front) and strategic significance of each are all reasonably represented.

My thanks to Allan B. Calhamer and his idea of 1954. What a great game. A great look back at history too.

Consider this: the battles of Ypers and the Somme which literally cost the lives of the youngest, best and brightest of France, Germany, and Britain were described entirely in the Dip battles of Belgium, Picardy and Burgundy areas.

RUFFHAUS8, my comment was with tongue firmly in cheek.

jason4747, Diplomacy isn't very good at all at *simulating* World War one. There are many games which do a better job. What Diplomacy does, better than any other game is *emulate* Great Power interaction of the era.
@David E. Cohen. Even that isn't that accurate in most wars, WWI included, you can count on your allies as there is an aggressor and a defender and each group is generally politically aligned. The defenders aren't generally out to rule the world. Their goal is simply to stop the aggression, return the status quo, and eliminate the circumstances that triggered the aggression to begin with.

Diplomacy makes every nation is the aggressor and looking to conquer the world at the start and possibly looking for a means to that end even while being a defender to in the late game and if they are a strong second.

jason4747 (1633 D)
20 Nov 18 UTC
@David E. Cohen, excellent point, more of an emulation than simulation.

I just have grown to appreciate why Allan picked certain regions over others. As I read more about WW1, I see the significance. Take Galicia for example: it was a key Russian/Austrian battlefield and crosses over several modern nations. Were it not for the game, I probably would not have ever thought much of it.

How many times have you started a game and had to think deeply about going in, bouncing, or DMZing that zone in your years of Diplomacy? It probably gets more thought than Rome, Paris or Berlin just because it was set up as a contested border zone.

@JECE, yes, I think I understated. Probably 10,000 per day, more like 1,000,000 in the Diplomacy game seasons.

YouCan'tHandleTheTruth, I did not relate Diplomacy to war in my characterization. Diplomacy is about as much of a war game as chess is. I said it emulated Great Power interactions, which were not limited to the battlfield by any means.
Sorry for my misinterpretation, David. It does that to a degree, especially for that time a mere few decades after the Napoleonic Wars. Each nation was looking out for number one. Nowadays, the former WWII allies tend to stay allied and it better mirrors the relations between the great powers and the up and coming powers like the OPEC nations and central/south America's.

@ YCHTT: I didn't read Chumbles' post as referring to any specific politician, but as a warning to stay vigilant, because something like the rise of fascism *could* happen again. Whether it in fact is happening is another conversation entirely, one that past experience shows should not be had here.

Saying that his remarks make you want to retrieve a weapon and "hunt liberals" - I realize you don't actually intend to go out and murder people, but IMO that sort of hyperbolic reaction, threatening violence, is why we can't have nice things.
Chumbles (1380 D)
26 Nov 18 UTC
Having said my bit about this, I was going to let it rest. But I regard myself as a libertarian rather than a liberal; I would defend your right to express your disagreement with me.

I am simply aware of the creep of radical, repressive movements that polarize opinions and lead to violence at all levels. In some cases this has already led to the de facto supremacy of dictators and oligarchs who are playing the same old tunes that Hitler and Stalin played. Russia's latest flouting of international law, the illegal seizure of Ukraine's coastal forces is simply the latest in a long sequence. And China has been playing that disgusting card all along.

The truth is that if we don't deploy a cynical attitude and question all we're told then democracy loses it's best and only defence.
I'd hunt conservatives too. I'd hunt extremists of all sorts. That said, I got rid of all my firearms long ago after I saw my share of violence in the Corps. I'm not anti-gun as I feel the only way to defend oneself is to meet force with force. Pacifism results in the aggressors enslaving the pacifists. So if forced I would secure a means to defend myself and my loved ones, but I have no desire and to possess a firearm "just in case".

So while I expressed myself in an extreme manner, it was hyperbole to make a point. Small government there to protect the rights of the downtrodden and see to the needs of the weak and infirm but keeping it's fingers out of the rest is my desire. Socially liberal, fiscally conservative, centrist is what I am.

Smelly stand-ins/replacements
We have a situation, a 'metagaming' tactic which thoroughly distorts gunboat games' outcomes. Replacement players don't have to have the same RRas the game originally required. Thus we can get a replacement whose sole purpose is to recover their own RR by suiciding - moving their own units out of their centres in so another player can move in entirely uncontested.
