What's the point in muting a nation in non-anon if the mods will let the player PM you?
A player PMed me after I muted his nation and the mods said it's not against the rules. It would seem to me to violate the intent of the press rules if not the letter. I have since muted the player for the rest of the game but that was not my desire.

Known World Tournament
Awhile back, kaner proposed a Known World gunboat tournament in which 15 participants would play 15 games, one with each nation. I searched back for the thread, then just decided to start a new one. I want to see if there would be sufficient interest in this to try to get it off the ground.

finding replacement for game 34637
Due to outside circumstances, I find I am not able to continue to fully participate in the Embassy Cable game (Gobble Earth variant). The game is currently on an extend phase for another day, so if anyone is willing to take over for Mexico (solid position) please let me know so we can have the mods put you into the game. Thanks!

Unique convoy situation question
I never thought this was possible until someone suggested it, but I have yet to try it. Say you have an army in Spain, a fleet in Marseilles, and a fleet in Gulf of Lyon. The fleet in Marseilles moves to Spain and the army in Spain moves to Marseilles via convoy of Gulf of Lyon. I know in normal Diplomacy rules that two units can't switch locations like that, but does the convoy change the route the army takes at all to allow this?

[New Variant] World Diplomacy X
I am in the process of creating my first variant: World Diplomacy 10 (https://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=129).
Mercy (2131 D)

The variant is an adaptation on World Diplomacy IX (variantID=2).

In the past few weeks, Enriador has been very helpful in teaching me how the process of creating a variant works. Tobi1 has also been helpful to me with advice, and I should of course mention Oli too. :)

In this topic, I'd like to collect your feedback on the variant. I have yet to create a sampleMap and interactive map, but I'd like to take feedback first before getting to the final steps of creating this new variant.

Since World Diplomacy IX is one of the available variants on webDiplomacy and my variant is an adaptation on it, I figured that some players on that site might be interested in giving feedback, too, so I decided to open a discussion there as well. For those of you who are interested, here is a link: http://webdiplomacy.net/contrib/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=902
Nice job Mercy and congrats on joining the variant adapter club! On first glance it looks pretty balanced. Go the penguins!

If you are still looking for another name for "Pacific Russia", I would please like to suggest to you the name "Siberia".

This is a great initiative, thanks!

My first thought was that life looks even harder for what I think is the weakest power in the original variant - China - with the addition of Japan. However, it'd be interesting to see how it plays out.
Mercy (2131 D)

@ Retillion: Thank you for the suggestion. I have followed it. The reason I didn't change it to Siberia before was because the province 'West Siberia' was not under control of Pacific-Russia. However, after looking at it more, I realized that 'West Siberia' was actually not a very accurate name and Siberia was more fitting as a name for Pacific-Russia than I originally thought. I have also changed some province names now and redrew some borders, without changing connections, in that region.

@ tantrumizer: I am glad that you like the initiative and I agree that China is the weakest power in the original variant; even more so, I have done some statistics on a large sample of games on webDiplomacy and China came out as the weakest. I think the reason for China's weakness in World IX is because China is the only logical option for Pacific-Russia to attack, and it is logical for no country except China to attack Pacific-Russia. Hence, in World IX, most of the time China is locked in a war against an opponent he has no allies against. Often, India will use this opportunity to attack China too. I think I improved China's position in World X by allowing for more options. Let me explain why I think so. China COULD still be ganged up on, but it could also be that Siberia and Japan will fight each other, giving China opportunities, and even if they ally, they could still decide to attack Canada, not China; and even if China gets ganged up on by all its neighbours, all its neighbours have more neighbours that they have to worry about now, like Russia, Canada, Australia and Near East. This is an example of what I meant on webDip by 'improving balance by encouraging more interactions between players in the early game'. China has a lot more options diplomatically now.

In a well designed variant, each of the Powers should be able to plausibly fight or plausibly ally with each of its neighbors. Increasing flexibility of play so that this is the case tactically, strategically and diplomatically, leads to a more interesting and enjoyable experience for the players.

This is not the same thing as 'balance', which has to do with designing the variant so that each Power has a realistic (NOT equal) chance of victory. If equal chance of victory were important, variants like Pure and Chromatic would be much more popular.
Enriador (1507 D)
22 Aug 18 UTC
Well-said David. That's a brief, textbook summary of what variant-making is about.

Never tried WorldDip before, but once WorldDipX is online I will surely give it a try. Looks like a solid variant to me.

Good work Mercy!

I agree that they are not literally the same thing. My point is that if no one is plausibly able to ally with China, and this results in China having an unrealistic chance at victory, then giving China's neighbors more options will strengthen China and will thus improve the balance of the game.
Agreed, Mercy.

Some users on webdiplomacy complained about the colors in the World maps. Some colors are so dark that text is difficult to read on them, and others are the same color as move and support arrows. I changed the colors. Do you like the new ones?

Also, I removed two provinces in Antarctica, increasing Frozens flexibility with his starting units.
Chumbles (1380 D)

Excellent job on the colours! WOTMaster take note on the non-primary pallette used. Apart from eye-strain, primary colours trample over the move, support etc lines. I'm not sure about the Frozen amendment - it can take a helluva long time to wipe him, but only some playtesting will tell.

Damn, can some kind soul repeat that for me, WOTMaster has his fingers in his ears when I post!

You could also stop being bothered by the Player in question, act like a grown-up and move on. That's your beer though.

I second the Point on Antarctica, I fear that he now has a Corner Position with no "natural" enemies, as everyone will be more bothered on their Continental neighbours.
Enriador (1507 D)

>I changed the colors. Do you like the new ones?<

Certainly! The new palette is very much smoother for me (not a fan of the hyper-bright colors in the original).

I think that Near East and Oz have a somewhat similar tone, though that might be my eyes.
Chumbles (1380 D)

"act like a grown-up"... sadly, at the age of 67, I fear that my SoH is, unlike most of the rest of me (ceasing to function, dropping off or falling out), likely to continue to be a nuisance.

Your comment reminds me of my mother, who continued into her eighties asking "When are you going to stop playing games and grow up."
Mercy (2131 D)
29 Aug 18 UTC
@Chumbles, @GOD I see the points about Frozen. The reason I reduced the number of provinces in Antarctica was because someone on webDiplomacy (swordsman0303) argued that Frozen was too weak because his home supply centers were too far away from each other and because he could be prevented from building in the first turn. I partly fixed the first, but I did not give Frozen a guaranteed build because I felt that that would make him to strong. I see that you are leaning in the opposite direction. The way Frozen is set up now is kinda in the middle.
I think that the positions of Frozen and Oz are decently similar. They both have an island from where to expand. It would not be unlikely for them to clash with each other. An alliance between them could be strong, but so, I think, are many more two-way alliances.

@Chumbles Who is this so called 'WOTMaster'?

@Enriador To me, the color of Near East looks more similar to the color of the naval territories than to the color of Australia.
Chumbles (1380 D)
29 Aug 18 UTC
That would be the beatified Enriador, from whose inner circle I have been cast into the Pit of Mute for the sin of irony... but onto more important matters... I definitely think WDX needs a playtest or three to see.

> the color of Near East looks more similar to the color of the naval territories than to the color of Australia.<

Hmm, makes sense too. Perhaps you could slightly darken Near East's color? Just to provide some extra contrast with both nearby sea spaces and a in case they border the Australasian power.

In Classic, I am confident if an army in Portugal Attacks Spain while an Army in Spain attacks Portugal, both will fail. Would this rule still apply if the it were instead a fleet on the northern coast attacking Portugal and a fleet in Portugal moving to the southern coast?

Our game bugged out, and mods are looking at it. What do we do and what will happen?
So basically, We were playing World War IV 6.2. It was the first time we got our community of players, both on a subreddit and a discord, to play a big 36 player game. Didn't start 100% the best the first year, some players didn't get the rules and ended up starting with 2 units instead of 3.
