What's the deal with all the padlocks that have appeared throughout my games when viewed on the vDip homepage?

In webdiplomacy, the order status of players in anonymous games is hidden. It appears that Oli is halfway in an attempt to implement that here, too (you can't see the order status on the homepage, but you can if you click on the game). I like it.
Mercy (2131 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Speaking about changes Oli is making, I have noticed that when I look at the forum from the home screen, players dPoints are showing instead of players vPoints. That seems to be a bug but it appears Oli is experimenting with more things at the moment.
Good ol' Oli. Always trying to up the game.
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
@Mercy, do you think this means he is looking to fully implement that WebDip Feature?
Enriador (1507 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
I really enjoy this feature, thanks @Oli!

The vPoints being replaced by dPoints seem to have been corrected.
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Enriador, would please explain the benefit? I personally am concerned by the cost.
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Personally, the tone of my messages differs when the recipient is readied vs just has saved orders. Typically, if they have readied, I don’t count on them coming back at some point to see my message. But if I can see who has Readied, I have to assume no one is coming back?
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
I guess if it it just effecting Anon games, I can just avoid playing those...
Enriador (1507 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Reasons:

1) I like the anonymity.

2) If a game has a 24h phase and I want, for one reason or another (mostly expecting a reply) to wait until the phase's very end before Readying, I would rather not have the annoying "can you ready?" as if I was dragging the game on purpose or something.

3) We also cannot change orders based on a meta concept (like, "whoa two hours left and Austria hasn't put orders yet")

4) Related to the point above: "damn, Italy hasn't even talked to me yet and they already readied orders for the next phase - how rude!"

You mentioned a "cost", @Caerus. What is it?
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
(+2)
@Enriador, the cost was the ability to change the my expectation of a response I described above.

#2 is an annoying habit of players. But I have found that when confronted in the first season by the player who did ready, I didn’t hear anymore of it.

#4 - I have actually done this, but mostly in an effort to strike up a conversation from someone who is ignoring my press. Even if I can’t see the ready marks, I’ll still do this. Got to get people to talk to change their mind, even if they are talking because they hate you.

There was an entire post discussing point #3, and no one there took issue with it. My rational is the exception under the site Rules 2a “using Site Public knowledge” quoted below, for your convenience.

“Using Public Site Information:
Metagaming is using information from outside of the game to impact in game decisions. There are limited exceptions to this prohibition if everyone in the game has the same access to the information. For example, looking at another player's game records in a public game is okay because everyone in the game has completely equal access to those records. ”

I very much hope there is at least an option to run games the old way, even if the new one is the 'default' and requires changing when you create a game.

As it stands, the only 'benefits' I can see of the new system are:
- much easier to get away being being that annoying shit that refuses to ready up in a game with an agreement to play things as fast as feasible on signup
- impossible to adapt your orders if an otherwise steadfast ally fails to submit orders, for whatever reason (for example, another site glitch).
Enriador (1507 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
I said "meta" (which it is) but didn't mean "metagaming" in the sense of cheating, I must clarify.

I don't see any problem with people that don't want to ready up for whatever reason. Honestly, when I want a faster game (I do want them sometimes) I go for 12h phases/Rulebook press. If I sign up for 48h phase games I actually expect the phase to last 48 hours. Yeah, silly me!

> impossible to adapt your orders if an otherwise steadfast ally fails to submit orders, for whatever reason (for example, another site glitch).<

I don't care much about this due to my background (I started playing Diplomacy over email and the Droidippy app, where you cannot see who sent orders already) but I understand why it can upsets some people. As far as I am aware only webDip/vDip, across the entire Online Diplomacy spectrum, specifically revealed who didn't ready their orders up?

I do believe that we could have an option for games to eliminate "Save orders" entirely (like in Rulebook press on Retreat/Build phases). That way all players would be obliged to Ready immediately.

Meanwhile, those who hate the new system's extra anonymity can always play non-Anon games.

Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Enriador, I understand that you were not accusing anyone of cheating, but you did make the assertion that we can make decision based on Meta information. That was the root of my original question, what Information is too meta to make decisions on?

We are all in agreement that holding a grudge past the end of the game is wrong, so all of the games you beaten me in shouldn’t have any barring. But the Rules specifically state that I can look through your game records to see that you always attack France as Italy (hypothetical). Furthermore, we all know that England wins more games than Italy does (actual, vDip stats). All of the above information is Publically available Metadata, which of it can’t be used when I make my Choices?

YEAH!! No more sniping NMRs!
Enriador (1507 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Good points @Caerus, I am obliged to agree with your logic. Still, I don't think that point #3 is much of an issue - you can always know if an ally is going to NMR if you notice their lack of replies.

I'm with mouse on this, I sure hope there's still the option to do things the "old fashioned way". To me, this seems to be a solution looking for a problem. I honestly don't see the positives.

As for the sniping NMRs and not knowing who's entered orders rationales:

1) why should we protect people who NMR?

And 2) why shouldn't we know who has or has not entered orders? Is it better to have to guess as to whether we'll have 1, 2, or 10 NMRs that can ruin a game? Isn't it better to see those unentered orders and either be able to a) message those people and remind them to enter orders, or b) ask for pauses or extends so the game isn't ruined?
Sky_Hopper (365 D)

Has anyone realized on the forum box on the homepage, there's a bug? The vPoints are rendering as dPoints.

Why does this only apply to anon games? Why is this now the 'default' setting as opposed to something you can add on to a game if you prefer additional anonimity?

I don't like the change at all, but particularly as a new default setting. I don't see what significant benefit comes from this change. I disagree with points #2-4 above, but others (Caerus in particular) have already pointed out the faults so I won't repeat them. Instead, I note that the behavior you mention in #2-4 are just as common in non-anon games as in anon ones.

I play 90+% anon games because I've found that when I don't my opponents (and allies) hold my rating against me -- i.e., that they assume I have a higher rating because I am stab-happy, as opposed to just the fact that I have been around for a while. I suspect new players also might play anon to avoid people knowing they are new.

If people do not want to have this new feature, and no opt in/opt out option is available as a setting, then they will be forced to play non-anon games. Or not at all.

I’m always merging our vdip-code with the original webdip-code.
That’s why I’m always careful about changing too much of the original code. Every change makes maintaining harder.
They are thinking about adding live-chat or live-ordersubmission, so it’s important to keep the sources somewhat in sync.

I will fix the dpoint/vpoints of the forums later this evening. But I’m not sure about the implementation of the hidden-order-status. Someone playing on both sides what´s the problem here?
Mercy (2131 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
The problem with NMR sniping is that not everyone will be able to be online at the exact deadline, so it unfairly favors players who can. In fact, when NMR sniping is possible, players are even encouraged to unnecessarily extend game phases by only readying at times that would make the deadline become more handy for them.
Also, like Enriador, when I sign up for a game with a phase length of T, I expect phases to be T long. I don't mind the extra wait. If I wanted to play in a game with a shorter phase, I would have signed up for a game with a shorter phase.
So I see no downsides to the new change. I do see upsides, because I like the additional layer of anonimity.

@Caerus: Yes, I think he will. I have also noticed another change: when I look at a player profile, I see "Visited in last 24 hours", but not an exact time. This is, again, to improve anonimity.

@Sky_Hopper: Yes, I did. I mentioned it way back in this thread.
Sniping is easily countered by last minute orders that screw over the would be sniper.
Also, just to clarify, seeing someone hasn't entered orders isn't a meta concept. You are seeing on the game page and it is only in regards to that game. It is only meta if you know the person had something happen in real life and was missing all their turns so you ordered expecting them to CD based on other games going on.
I don't like this change and it has nothing to do with sniping. If my ally has gone away, a reminder sometimes gets their attention. More than once one of my reminders saved an ally from missing orders because they forgot to save them. I can't do that now.

I agree that an option to choose either the classic or the padlock mode would be the best of both worlds.

The classic mode has the advantage that it adds another layer to the game to be gamed and glean information from. Padlock mode seems to me more like a traditional postal game where you can't be sure if and who will miss their orders, or will already make up their mind before even hearing for you.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
