It's very hard to win as France. You need to somehow have a breakthrough in the south in order to win I think.

Well that’s pretty much impossible even if you move straight to North Africa in the first year. No, I think keeping Austria out of Scandinavia is the key to victory.

I recently lost a game as Austria where France overwhelmed me in the south. France normally can be first in Scandinavia if it wants to (bounce Kiel, get a fleet to Denmark)

The key to victory for Austria is not let France get past Germany without wasting to many units there and try to secure Italy and prevent France from getting past Italy too
