24 Dec 22 UTC I think that does it. Well played. A very unconventional strategy for Austria, but effective. I felt the pressure in the North and the South the entire game.
24 Dec 22 UTC GameMaster: France voted for a Concede. If everyone (but one) votes concede the game will end and the player _not_ voting Concede will get all the points. Everybody else will get a defeat.
24 Dec 22 UTC I usually play only large maps; that s why i don t play standard openings: i don t know them.
I do believe though that sending your very first fleet to the North is a mistake: it won t do much against me upthere while if you reach Mediterranee in the first year, it will be hard for me to control Italy.
I hope it helps, thanks for the game.
24 Dec 22 UTC Interesting. More typically, Austria contests the center from the get-go, vying for Munich/Berlin. I hear what you're saying on the first fleet, but I think if I don't have that fleet up there, you end up controlling Scandi for too long. It takes longer for France to get fleets to the Northern theater than the Southern. I prefer to send the first fleet north and take my chances that I'll be able to overcome Austria's early advantage in the Med with fleet builds. Anyway, I enjoyed the game. If you want to go again, I'll repost a couple more games after the New Year.
13 Apr 23 UTC Hi again, I didn't believe your advice at first. The expert literature on FvA is completely to the contrary. More recently, I've been experimenting with the Southern opening as France, and I think you may be right. Thank you.

14 Apr 23 UTC I believe the best strategy in 1vs1 is to rush towards your opponent s HQ, regardless of the cost.
I also believe that the game will be decided around Italy, not Scandinavia (Austria can t bring fleets upthere so unlikely to invest heavily in that direction)

So, with that in mind, Brest-Atlantic is a must move.

The next move is more challenging: Atl-Med or Atl-Spa?
Position or builds?

I thinki i prefer Atl-Med, following the "rush to the heart" idea.
16 Apr 23 UTC Hmm, interesting strategy. I have never thought of it that way. A couple of other points to consider as France:

Austria will sometimes use a "rush" strategy, trying to get to 18 centers by 1905, 1904 even. It's a bit dangerous for France to leave Austria unchecked in the North. If Austria can get to StP and Norway and hold them for just long enough ...

Back to the opening, we have to consider what the other French and Austrian units are doing. For instance, if France opens to Mid-Atl, Piedmont and Burgundy, and Austria opens with the fleet to Venice, France is already -1 in 1901 (even if Mid-Atl continues to Spain SC). Continuing Mid-Atl to West Med would put France -2, maybe with zero builds.
