25 Jul 20 UTC Well played, Turkey! Now that I can go back and see the full map, that was a pretty impressive stab you pulled on Russia in order to win that game. And my apologies for that turn when I took Norway, Russia. I was trying to bounce it since I didn't want Germany to take it and I'd realized at that point that Turkey had likely stabbed you to go for the solo, but Germany didn't seem to get on the same page that we needed you with us in order to try and stop Turkey. Since I'd already lost Marseilles and couldn't form a line with seventeen SCs behind it, I don't know if we actually could have or not, but I was trying to do what I could. Anyways, pity that the three of us couldn't ally to force a draw, but you definitely deserved the hard-fought win, Turkey, and it was great playing with you all!
25 Jul 20 UTC Yeah gg Turkey. I almost stabbed you a turn earlier, but wanted to get a better position in northern Europe first.

Germany, what was your plan? After I threw everything at Turkey, why didnt you help out? You didn't even try to help support me.
25 Jul 20 UTC You didnt even throw a support hold to Moscow.
25 Jul 20 UTC First time playing Fog of War and picked up in the middle for somebody who dropped. I basically just screwed up and missed the sign that the 3 of us should work together when only Turkey didn't draw.

With Russia out, I was "hoping" that France had secured Spain/Marseilles and we could push back into Munich and hold for a draw with only two players cooperating. I should have known better when BUR stopped assisting in Munich.

Basically, I felt less aggression from the West than the East and was just trying to survive.
25 Jul 20 UTC Good game, everybody! Obviously, it's the most fun when you win, but honestly, this would have been a really fun game for me even if I had ended up stalemated and had to settle for a draw.

I'd been worrying lately that I might not have the "killer instinct" that would let me take my game to a new level, and I deliberately chose to work on that this time around. It was a real temptation, when Austria, Italy and England had all been eliminated, and all three of the rest of you had set for draw - I think I was at about 11, and easily could have agreed to a 4-way draw. But I had lost to a Turkish solo in an earlier Fog of War game, so I knew my power is one of the best at this variant, and I wanted to play it out and see if I could solo too. And I ended up with the 3 "M" centers that are the key to winning as a southern power; Marseilles, Munich, and Moscow.
25 Jul 20 UTC This was my 6th Fog of War game, and my first as Turkey. I started out knowing patience would be key. I was very unlikely to get more than Bul in 01; Austria seems to always take Ser and Gre, and Russia takes Rum. I didn't want to open with Smy-Con, because F Con is the most versatile build and I didn't want to block Con up, so I went to Arm instead. But I didn't want to attack Russia immediately, so I used it to offer a support hold in the fall, to indicate friendliness and a desire to cooperate. Even though smart Austrian and Italian players cooperate rather than fight these days, in Fog of War the lack of press makes that much more difficult, and they generally seem to fight, and Turkey can really benefit from this.

Eventually, I had to move units away from Arm and Bla to keep up the friendship with Russia, but I wanted to keep them in the vicinity, in case I wanted to stab Russia later (or defend myself against a stab from them). A lot of the game, there was a tension between that, and making more immediate use of my units by moving them to an active front. I managed to get units back into position for my big stab later in the game.

Russia, I'm sorry that my stab led to your complete elimination. You fought back very well, but you did have to deal with a German neighbor who took advantage while you moved units towards me.

Germany, I understand that you had been struggling with Russia most of the game. We saw the least info about each other in the course of the game. Also, one of the surprises to me when I saw the complete map and history was how much Italian incursion there was in Germany, while I was just concentrating on finally taking Venice. Anyway, you might have benefited more from cooperating with Russia, but your choices were understandable.

France, you played a very good game. I did notice that you didn't always get the most out of your orders for Bur, though. You sometimes gave a support hold to Gas, when I never had more than one unit on Gas, so it didn't need that support. Kicking Mar to cut a potential support order, or supporting Mun, would have been a better use of that unit. You did a great job at keeping me out of the Mid-Atlantic after my one look around there, though, and out of Spain until the last desperate turn.

I was only able to win by taking every opportunity I saw, and sometimes by having a lucky break along the way. It was a fun struggle all along! I'm really liking the Fog of War variant - it adds a whole new dimension to the familiar classic/standard map. And I've won my two best solos at vDip on it - this one, plus one as Germany.
