1900 for vDip: Progress Report (ongoing)
As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

Known World Tournament
Awhile back, kaner proposed a Known World gunboat tournament in which 15 participants would play 15 games, one with each nation. I searched back for the thread, then just decided to start a new one. I want to see if there would be sufficient interest in this to try to get it off the ground.

Question: Adding Variant(s)
Please see reply.

Hello Everyone, how are you doing today? I would like to talk about adding variants. I personally have none now, but know this is an "experimental site" for them (I mainly play on WebDip). I was wondering what the requirements are for making variants. Is any coding experience required (even if there are no "special rules")? Can just anyone make them? Do you delete unpopular ones? How are they implemented? Is there a creator tool that lets you connect a bunch of nodes (territories) together or is it more complicated than that? I would love to discuss this thanks!

Ok. after viewing some 'code' for a variant. it seems like most of it is copy paste. entering parameters isnt too hard just tedious right?

Thanks! I checked the link and went a bit deeper into the variant threads and found this: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=362
However I checked the links that were given and most of them cannot be found by my browser ( which is very annoying). Does anyone know if there has been an update on these tools?

Oh, and what is the purpose of the download button when you click on a variant?

The tools are unfortunately outdated, but not necessary for variant development. I am pretty sure, that most of the variants on vdip are created without their help.

The guide that kaner posted focuses on the creation of the map png files which is the biggest part of work for variants, that only change maps.
Another (outdated) guide by Oli himself goes a bit further and gives a complete overview of the creation process. It can be found here: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=432. However, there is nowadays a useful tool for entering the raw data into the database. For that I recommend the lab.diplomail.ru, which acts as a replacement of the old website for developing variant, lab.diplomacy.com. If you contact the admin Flame over there with your variant files, he will probably install them for you so you can use the Edit-Tool for entering the territory data into the database.

For additional rules, things get a bit more complicated. For existing rules, it is mostly just copy and paste the code from other variants that use that rule. However, as long as there is no detailed guide on that, I recommend some basic knowledge in php so you know what you are doing and get a satisfying result.

Unfortunately we have lost detailed guides on variant creation with the disappearing of a vdip-wiki due to technical issues some time ago. I am still hoping, that the data can be recovered at some point.

For the further progress after the variant is done and tested, I cannot give much advice. In former days when Oli was very actively administrating the website and things were developed on his lab, finished variants just got ported over here when they were finished (and I am not aware of unpopular variants being removed again). Some even got installed on other webdip installations.
However, it has been a long time since the last variant got installed over here and I am not aware of the current state. But since Oli seems to be returning to website, there is probably no big deal with installing a finally finished variant on this website.

Well, the download button is for downloading all the variant data files. Pretty useful, if you want to help the developer of a variant and want to test the variant on a different server.
If you have developer rights for a variant, you can even upload variant files (with a verification process for critical ones).

How big is too big? I am making a map and am willing to do as much work as I can so the work for the mods/devs are minimal. Mine would have to have a scroll in it similar to the Colonial map. Mine is 3000x~1800. Am done base map. currently adding text and will do coloring soon.

Thanks Tobi1! That is really helpful! Thank you so much! What do you call a finished variant? One that is completely done with coding and it doesn't have to be coded?

Hi Michael - like the maps. Nice job. Some thoughts:

1. Where do you see the SCs being for balance? Depending on how you do this and the "timing" of where in WW2 this starts, it'll be interesting to see what the Axis powers control. Likewise is the US position under estimated? Just trying to work out how to get the game balance right while also maintaining historical accuracies. Build anywhere or starting home SCs only?
2. I understand some territories would be impassable as they are true neutrals during the war, but some real life neutrals (eg Sweden, Spain) are able to be taken. Some territories that in real life are not neutral and could be easily taken (Sri Lanka, Corsica/Sardinia, Tasmania etc) are impassable? Some bits of Zaire/Congo I could imagine in "darkest Africa" would impassable but I thought the coastline would be ok. Ditto west of Nigeria. Why is UAE and that chunk of Siberia impassable? Caspian Sea? The Soviets set up their industrial centres in Siberia after Hitler stabbed and sent everything across to the front that way. What's the story with westcoast of South America? Just interested in your thinking/planning on this.
3. The compactness of Europe will be hard to read (let alone fit in units and SC dots) unless you have you really BIG map or some way of expanding the area.
4. No territory/SC for Hong Kong or Singapore?

Hello The Ambassador,
Im glad you like it. I am just trying to start a project and have not tested it yet. I want to test it before I publish.

1. Its still untested - https://imgur.com/a/vEH5h this is a map I made previously but minor changes have been made since.

build anywhere most likely - again, depends on the first playtest.

kind of hard to balance by making germany strong as they have no colonies.

2. Ill take a look at al those. I mainly made siberia impassable because I love the idea of the USSR fighting a TRUE 2 front war. some of the impassabels are maybe not too accurate i agree. but this is based on WW2. part of the raeasons is to create certain "chokepoints".

3. will work on that once I get free time.

4. singapore was included with malaysia (lived in singapore for 10 yrs, I know their significance) to encourage more naval battle and to save space.

Im still on the fence wiht hong kong.

This is supporsed to be 1939. i included an unusual portugese empire with an inaccurate brazilian colony to give france, britain and mexico a neighbor. its all still VERY fluid and might change

If you have over 256 land territories the. You will need to split up so.e of the map files. Have a look (download) the PNG map images for the WWIV maps for an example.

@michael_b

One troublesome aspect about full-globe maps is that you tend to end up with some regions that super-tightly packed and some that are enormous. It can make the map itself somewhat frustrating to visualize.

This is a bit of a problem with Imperial, though it is at least at a high enough resolution that, zoomed-in, you can see what's going on:

While as a two-player variant, it's a very different experience, I am impressed by the construction of the Cold War map in handling this same issue:

Okay, I am working a four-player variant about the Corsican Revolution. What exactly do I need to have it ready for coding? I am working on the prototype. If I remember well, I need a smallmap example and a bigmap example, right? Is that all I need to do? Just a small map and a big map

To Everyone in Furnace of Affliction
I'm really sorry, as I was trying to fix the Indonesia Build bug the game sent everyone into CD and cancelled itself. This was because I forgot about another bug - if you enter all holds, it counts as an NMR even if saved, so when I tried to advance the game 2 phases it assumed everyone had NMR'd twice (even though I'd set hold orders for everyone).

obsolete Sengoku variant
Hi all, designer of Sengoku here. I would love to get the latest version of Sengoku in use on this system, as it is much more balanced. Found here: http://dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Sengoku
Even if the DP system, can't be used, the version at http://nairenvorbeck.angelfire.com/ is still better than the one in use currently. Poor Mori needs a fair chance :-) Anyone willing/able to help me get these implemented?

In-game messaging with multiple players without Global Chat
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to send messages to multiple players without using the Global Chat. It would very practical for players that are in a 2+ people alliances as they don't need to rewrite everything again for each ally. Is there such a thing yet? If not, I hope a developper passes by and makes a note of this. Thanks!

Public messages hidden from non-players
I noticed public messages in games are hidden from non-players, even for finished games. Does anyone know if this was a deliberate decision on vDip? On webDip these are visible to non-players, which is interesting for looking at the player dynamic or end of game commentary.
