1066 Tournament
As discussed in episode 23 of the Diplomacy Games podcast I'm thinking of putting together a 1066 tournament. Interested takers?

I have the points. I’m in.
I'm cool with YCHTT's suggestion of 3 rounds although I my original idea was to for each player to take turns playing England, Normandy and Norwegians so we would iron out any advantage each country would have.

How about:
E=England
NM=Norman
NW=Norwegians

Round one:
1 E, 6 NM, 9 NW
2 E, 5 NM, 8 NW
3 E, 4 NM, 7 NW
Round 2:
1 NM, 6 NW, 9 E
2 NM, 5 NW, 8 E
3 NM, 4 NW, 7 E
Round 3:
1 NW, 6 E, 9 NM
2 NW, 5 E, 8 NM
3 NW, 4 E, 7 NM
Final:
Open to ideas on scoring systems but essentially winners of each group would then progress to finals with the same system:
Winners: group 1 E, group 2 NM, group 3 NW
Winners: group 1 NM, group 2 NW, group 3 E
Winners: group 1 NW group 2 E, group 3 NM
Based on whatever we agree is the scoring system, whoever gets the most points is declared winner, 2nd most points 2nd, 3rd most points 3rd.

If I'm over complicating things happy to go to YCHTT's simpler solution. Entirely open to you guys.
Actually, I was thinking the same thing about everyone trying out each nation, so we are on the same page.
Cool, is there a generally recommended scoring system to use? If we can get 9 players I'm happy to be tourney director. Never done that before.
The variant tournaments use (players in draw) / (eliminated players) for draws and (nations in game) / 2 for solos IIRC. So a 3 player game would score: solo = 1.5 points, 2 way draw = .5 points each, and three way draw would be worth nothing.

2 Way draws are definitely a possibility with the majority plus 2 capitals requirement. The smaller player could get two capitals and manage to stalemate the larger one.

I'd still push 6 rounds (eg for 169: 1E 6NM 9NW, 1E 9NM 6NW, 6E 1NM 9NW, 6E 9NM 1NW, 9E 1NM 6NW, 9E 6NM 1NW) rather than 3, to further balance things (mainly, removing any advantage based on which order the rotation goes), but yeah, initial pools of 3 with the winners of each pool progressing to the final, with the same scoring as the variant tourneys (or just arbitrary 3win/1draw a la football, which is incidentally just 2x what the variant tourney scoring would give.

169, 258, 347 is good seeding.

One advantage of the 6-game approach suggested by mouse is that if it is anon then you won't be able to play tactically against the current group leader, and will have to play each game as it comes.
Yeah, 6 games per group per round is definitely in order. I'm with mouse there. Play them concurrently as well. This would result in 24 total games for 9 players (18 in round 1 and 6 in the finals).

I just presented a more unified scoring that would help to normalize all the varaint rankings in the variant thread because the complaint was made that the overalls were skewed by the points per game varying based on the number of players on the board. If they adopt some new more balanced between variant scoring, we should use that and roll this into it.
Should we roll this into the mini tournament thread and include it as one of them simply as a 3x6 or a 9x18+3x6?

Are sign-ups for this still possible?
Ok, if we are playing with 9 players (& assuming I take on tourney director role ans don't play) with have ONLY ONE more spot avaiable.

Those who have signed up:
1. GOD
2. ubercacher16
3. Greatdjenkins
4. YouCan'tHandleTheTruth
5. mouse
6. Battalion
7. Mr. Finkelmuiyer
8. fasces349

I'm ok with YCHTT's suggestion on the 6 games per group round option to iron out advantages in position etc. Can we lock that in?

Any suggestions on a good way of me as tourney director to keep track of what's going on/who's playing who? Will I need to be temporarily a mod so I can reallocate players in games, or is that "out of the box" if a game is part of a tournament?

I'd say set up a consistent cycle, so people can refer to something that says "you play as x in game y" and then just have the games as select country. If something comes up (eg. people joined wrong slot) that can be sorted before the game starts.

Does have the downside of knowing the mapping in each set of two games where you're the same civ before one of them finishes and you can determine the other one, but eh, so much less admin work that the tradeoff is fine.

I would be happy to to take the 9th spot, if we can agree on min 36 h phases. I might be only able to log in once a day, which could be problematic with 24 h phases and a bad phase deadline.
I prefer 48 hours so that works for me.
mouse (1825 D)
05 Nov 17 UTC
Yeah, 36h or 48h phases; we *should* be able to have them moving a bit faster with only three people to ready up, but having the slack is nice if you need it.
Ok, so 48 hour phases with the principle to ready up when you can.

Final 9 then are:
1. GOD
2. ubercacher16
3. Greatdjenkins
4. YouCan'tHandleTheTruth
5. mouse
6. Battalion
7. Mr. Finkelmuiyer
8. fasces349
9. tobi1

Anyone happy to be added to the reserves list, just throw your name in the hat.

I'm going to have to back out of this I'm afraid - RL has suddenly got a lot more busy! I'm sure (and I hope!) that you'll be able to find someone willing to take my place fairly easily.
No worries Battalion, these things happen. Recruiting for one more:

1. GOD
2. ubercacher16
3. Greatdjenkins
4. YouCan'tHandleTheTruth
5. mouse
6. Mr. Finkelmuiyer
7. fasces349
8. tobi1

48h phase please.
If folks are good with 48 hours then we have 9 again. Please indicate if you see any show stoppers:

1. GOD
2. ubercacher16
3. Greatdjenkins
4. YouCan'tHandleTheTruth
5. mouse
6. Mr. Finkelmuiyer
7. fasces349
8. tobi1
9. ubercacher16

Sorry Bob, painting my numbers is clearly not my thing. Neither is attention to detail. Or Dip gameplay for that matter ;-)

Thanks for pointing that out. Still looking for one more player then:

2. ubercacher16
3. Greatdjenkins
4. YouCan'tHandleTheTruth
5. mouse

Hahah, that's alright Amby. We don't call them mistakes, they're just happy little accidents ;-)

Good luck finding the ninth player. Unfortunately 1066 just really isn't my kind of variant as this does sound like a fun type of tournament!

I wouldn't mind playing in two sets! That means double the points for me! ;)
Of course, you wouldn't get into round two unless you were tops in round one so that should cover most, if not all, of the round two points.

1900 for vDip: Progress Report (ongoing)
As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
