Banned From Web Diplomacy?
Hello new friends! I was banned from Web Diplomacy.

hellenic_riot (1000 D)
02 May 17 UTC
Here is my account there - http://webdiplomacy.net/profile.php?userID=84594
I was accused of cheating.

As you can see, I have only played three games. Actually, one of those games never got off the ground so really I've only played two games. Clearly I haven't been around long enough to cheat, or at least not to cheat meaningfully.

Please be careful at that site, they ban people for no reason!

Hi 'hellenic_riot'... (hmmm sounds familiar somehow...),

I think you'll find that many players here are members of both sites. Although we do have our fair share of refugees from webDip <cough cough>. but we also have many players who only play here at vDip and don't go over to webDip.

@Mercy

Thank you. I happen to be terrible at thinking of new screen names for online accounts. I popped over to the forums to borrow somebodies name as I was making my account - keep in mind that on other video games, account names are a much smaller aspect of the gaming experience. Actually, I'll go so far as to say that with other video games, *forums* are a much smaller part of the gaming experience.

Nonetheless, Hellenic Riot was the coolest name I was able to find in about twenty seconds, not imagining that it could possibly cause any sort of problem to borrow someone's name. As noted, on any other gaming site it wouldn't be an issue. Meanwhile, I later find out that apparently one of the moderators is named hellenic riot.

...it's funny that everyone else's theories about my screen name are so wildly incorrect.
@HR - The reason is, this isn't a video game. This is a board game from the 60s transitioned to the web and it is a game in which reputations are built on a name. The community is small relatively speaking and so our name is our word and our word is our bond.
Mikey99 (2183 D)
02 May 17 UTC
(+2)
I have to say that the idea of joining an online community, whatever that community might be about, by taking one of their member's names for one's own is a pretty poor way to commence. Seriously, how hard is it to think of a screen name? My own is plainly based on my RL life name with an added numerical reference to a secret service agent in a 60's spy spoof show (free chocolate brownie to whomever gets it first.) But to take one of the likely more memorable names just doesn't seem to me to be the smartest move...

Then to announce yourself here with the same name, and with an open complaint about being unfairly kicked out of WD based on accusations of cheating? Something isn't quite right in all this...

@YouCan'tHandleTheTruth,

Thank you for the advice.

Boy, is this different from the game that I grew up playing. In the game that I'm accustomed to playing, gameplay actually centers around deception.

It's in the catbox, enjoy!
Gameplay, yes. But reliability (getting orders in and not missing them) and generally being a good netizen of the site builds a reputation here. What happens in game within the rules of the game, stays in game. But dick moves like refusing to finalize when you are forced to disband your last unit haunts you forever on the site. It's deception versus simple etiquette.

@HR - Taking the name of that specific mod was a really terrible choice, because there were quite a few people who were very angry with him for some decisions made around the time your account was created. @drano,

I just think it's funny the difference between the way that your brain works, and my brain works. If a black guy were driving through my neighborhood and got harassed by the police for no reason at all except for being black, my sympathy would be with him and my expectation would be that the police change their behavior.

To extend your line of reasoning, if a black guy were driving through your neighborhood and similarly harassed, your expectation would be that the cop should carry on, and that the motorist stop being black. I understand that's not precisely what you're saying, and I'm not trying to tacitly suggest that you're a racist. What I am suggesting, is that you seem to be rather a fan of victim blaming.

I think this entire situation says more about the alarmists at Web Diplomacy than it does about me, for example. If people are so easily offended, I'm better off without them.

@ hellenic_riot Just out of curiosity - Did the mods of webdiplomacy e-mail you to explain the reason behind your ban (at the e-mailadres you used for signing up on the site)?
@fakeHR - No, this is more of "If a black guy stole the cop's identity and the cop put him in jail, would you be on the black guy's side or the cop's?" Seriously, you stole a mod's identity. How fucking stupid are you?

Well that's interesting. All that analysis from one short response? Considering we don't know why you were banned, and have only your word in it, you'll surely allow me to remain skeptical that you're entirely innocent? The mods don't just ban everyone for no reason. There was surely some reason. Perhaps it has something to do with what captainmeme said about apparently using a proxy along with the whole "taking the same name as a mod" thing. To equate this with blaming someone for "driving while black" is ridiculous. There's quite a clear difference.

And my comment still stands, why would you use the same name here??

@Mercy,

Funny that you should ask. Normally, I wouldn't publish emails since I'd presume people send those sorts of things to me in confidence. However, since Webdiplomacy moderators are apparently publishing information about me, I suppose it's open season!

First I received:

"Dear webDiplomacy member,

I'm emailing you because our systems have flagged your account as
having very strong connections to other accounts on our site. It seems
these accounts have a strong likelihood of being owned and operated by
the same individual or by close real-life friends. You should know
that the webDiplomacy rules prohibit multiple accounts, and they
strongly limit the way in which you play games with real-life friends.
Please refer to the rules here: http://www.webdiplomacy.net/rules.php.

It is our job to determine whether these links are indicative of
cheating, or a misunderstanding of the rules. In that light, if there
is anything you would like to tell me that would help explain the
situation I would be grateful if you would respond to this email.
Admission to cheating will not necessarily mean the worst possible
punishment, since we all do make mistakes. If you fail to respond at
all in the next 3 days, I have no choice but to assume cheating and
ban the account(s) in question.

Thank you for helping us resolve this quickly.

webDiplomacy Moderator"

Hmmm...looks like boiler plate. To this I replied:

"Thank you for getting in touch. None of my friends play web diplomacy - I
found it through Wikipedia. Thank you for helping me to resolve this."

That should do it right? Their reply was:

"In that case, it appears that you may have multiple accounts. If you do, we
require that you limit yourself to one account, and we may ban the other
accounts.

-webDiplomacy Moderator"

Menacing, but not quite threatening. Problem solved, right? Still I sent a follow-up email just to be sure:

"Pardon, but I do not have multiple accounts. Please re-investigate before
you ban anyone's account. Would you consider that you are mistaken?

I'm pretty sure I would know if I had multiple accounts."

And then promptly didn't hear back from them. No news is good news? After that I was busy with work. I was receiving some emails from multiple video games, none of which I read because most of them are automated, and almost none of them are ever important. Webdiplomacy is just a video game, after all. A few days later I was finally caught up with work and so when I logged into Webdiplomacy, I'd found my email account was locked. What's this? I went sifting through unread emails and finally found the culprit:

"Oh, I've done some digging and it appears that you're using a VPN or proxy.
This could be the cause. May I ask why you are using such a tool? It's
interfering with our ability to detect multi-accounts and meta-gamers.

-webDiplomacy Moderator"

Followed very closely by:

"Dear webDiplomacy Member,

Your account has been banned for a violation of site rules. If you wish to
appeal this decision, please respond promptly.

-webDiplomacy Moderator"

This was annoying, especially since I was cooperating and had done nothing wrong. My response was pretty much to the point:

"This is quite silly. I'm using a proxy, because clearly I'm being spied
upon.

It's just overall a funny question - "So, we've been spying upon you, and
would like to know why you're taking evasive behavior."

Please unban my account, this is plain silly."

This did not receive any reply. About a week later I'd gotten tired of waiting and so sent a follow-up directly to one of the administrators, whose identity I won't publish as they tried to be actually helpful:

"Can you please look into this for me? I understand that you guys are
volunteers and so you probably have other stuff going on, however it's
been a few days and I'd really like to resume playing.

I've done nothing to deserve this and I've been more than patient."

The staff member replied promptly from their personal account:

"I will have an admin look into it."

Now we're getting somewhere! Later I received this gem:

"

Hi there

I hear you'd like a ban appeal. Is there any particular reason that you are
using an email address mimicking a site administrator whilst using all
those VPN's?"

Still, it hardly seemed politic to ignore the thing, not if I ever hoped to play Diplomacy again. Thus I replied:

"Thanks for responding.

My email address is the same as my account name. I think mimicking is a
stretch of what's actually going on - I borrowed someone else's account
name because I was too lazy to think of my own. I haven't posted on your
discussion board and don't read it. With all respect, I'm interested in
playing the game but not in the social aspects. As I've said, mimicry
seems like a stretch.

"Using all those VPN's" is surprising as well. Surprising is a euphemism
in this context - silly would be a better adjective. I'm using one VPN,
the one that comes with my browser (Opera). Does it rotate IP address?
Apparently it does. That's outside of my control though.

In essence, given that I'm new to the site I don't feel that I can
possibly have been involved in anything substantial enough to build a case
against me. Everything that's been brought to my attention so far has
been circumstantial.

Do you guys have any actual evidence that I've been cheating? Hasn't this
gone on long enough? As a compromise I'd like to volunteer to change my
screen name if it's that big of an issue for you guys, although I think
that this is more than I should need to do.

I'd love to confront some actual evidence if you guys have any, but your
argument here appears to be circular. I'm in trouble for using a VPN, but
I'm using a VPN because I prefer not to be spied on. I'm being spied on
because I'm in trouble. If you read those last two sentences back to
back, it's a circle. No actual evidence.

Please resolve this and unban me as soon as you're ready, preferably
sooner rather than later as I'd prefer to resume playing. While an
apology from you guys is not strictly necessary, some might feel that it's
indicated."

This did not elicit any response. I sent a follow up after about a week of waiting:

"It has been more than a week without response. Can we please unban my
account? No evidence has thus far been presented. Prosecution has no
case. Motion for dismissal. This persecution has continued long enough."

Which didn't seem to get my any further. After about another week of waiting, I made an account here, not having any other vector for redress.

What do you make of all this?
CCR (1010 D)
17 May 17 UTC
If you want to join the community, you must follow its rules and authorize it to "spy" you. If you don't, then you are a potential cheater and must be banned.

Summing up, answering your question, what do I make of all this?, It makes you a cheater.
Mikey99 (2183 D)
17 May 17 UTC
(+1)
Well this is interesting and you make your case quite well. In these times, I don't think it should be an indictment to be using a proxy. You might be torrenting, you might like porn, you might just not like the growing corporatisation and control of the web - any of these are solid reasons to use a VPN, and I agree that this should not be used as evidence of cheating. Especially if there haven't been any complaints or concerns raised by other players. Have there been? (I know that I'll raise it with mods if I see behaviour between players that appear to be meta-gaming).

But given your evident competency as demonstrated in this post, I just don't buy that you couldn't come up with your own screen name. I mean, seriously, how hard is that? Just throw two random words together and there you have it... think ... ummm.. "Blue Steel"... oh, wait... For me, that's what raises a flag. That you'd steal another person's handle, and frankly, in this context, that's what it is - stealing. Its a virtual community where all we have is our name and people's associations with that name. To take another is just dumb and you don't appear to be dumb. Even more dumb is to take a Mod's handle and a senior member of the site, although that may just be bad luck on your part... or just dumber, but see my early comment about dumber or dumber. Or maybe I'm just being dumberer myself.

But also, this all has to do with another site, another community, right? While many members play across both, many don't. Me for example. I'm ok with just vDip.

So why not close/delete/kill/exit/combust your account and sign up with a new one with your very own, unique and original account name. For a hint on how to do this, choose two books... say a bible and a random work of fiction with chapter titles and then flip open randomly to one chapter in each and combine the titles... you'll get, say - you could get "Cloud Chronicles" - see what I just did there? Hey, you could have fun with this all night and not only get your very own unique vDip name, you might get some useful Tinder/Grindr handles as well.

But I disagree that we should all allow ourselves to be spied upon. While this site might be harmless and well intended, many aren't and these are growing.

Paranoia speaks volumes about the paranoid. We always accuse others of things we are doing wrong ourselves. So if you see people "spying" on your internet activity, I suggest you must be doing it yourself. There is no spying here. This is a volunteer run site and the admins don't have time to waste on foolishness.

@YCHTT - Interesting perspective on his 'spying' comment. I know when I first read it, I immediately wondered what he has to hide if he's so concerned about spying. What is he doing that he doesn't want vDip or webDip to see? It never even occurred to me that he may be doing some of his own spying. Makes you think...
My general experience has been that those most paranoid are projecting their own guilt.
