I've really enjoyed playing variant-specific tournaments such as the Known World 15x15 currently underway.

Just finished listening - great episode! I have a couple of things to say wrt the Bourse discussion but I'll post that in the WWIV Bourse thread.

A reminder to everyone here - ODC signups (for round 1 at least) close in 3 days! We currently only have 4 vDip representatives on the list. Let's try to increase that number a bit :)

If you want info on the tournament, Carebear explains it all very well in the podcast interview.

Listening to it now! I'm certainly interested in joining this tournament :)

- Discuss a new Diplomacy Dilemma
- Look at when the boss bans Dip
- Talk about the new Lab and the 4 test variants being run
- An interview with Flame about the Lab and
- We live stream on Periscope

Phew! No wonder its our longest episode yet! As always listen at DiplomacyGames.com or subscribe on iTunes & Stitcher

I listen to these as I walk between work-college and home ^^ half way through the latest one :) great stuff hope you guys can keep it up :) Hope your thumb is getting better Ambass :P

Also kinda of embarrassing to be asked to get my name pronounced for being in the top 100 and then dropping off of it again xD but the new goal is to get back on it for the 6 month mark :3 Either-way always fun to listen to you guys and to have a diplomacy podcast in general :)

you guys should do a 2 country team gunboat game sometime with you two together verse some fans :) I am sure it would be quite interesting :3

Been listening to a few of these, kind of amusing and weird hearing about a game you're in (albeit vaguely and with 2 weeks old info). (Kaner, is it a stab if I attack you from the very first turn? ;) ) Really appreciate the detailed notes with times, since I kinda skip around.
Thanks Murcanic and zurn on your feedback. Greatly appreciated. If you have further ideas for what you, or any other listeners, want to hear discussed in the podcast suggest away!

I've asked Kaner if he's interested in the 2 vs 2 team game but haven't heard back. That said with the number of games we're in it might be a little while off.

Hearing you two complain about being in too many games is always fun ^^ but one I want to say the latest podcast was much nicer to listen too as it had less background noise then any previous ones to my knowledge.

As for further ideas I think that depends, what are the goals you two have for this podcast and what do you and kaner enjoy most about making this podcast? might as well brainstorm something you guys would like/enjoy doing :)
Switch out of periscope. There isn't a client for Windows phone or Windows OS on the PC. Not everyone has iPhones or Androids and being able to use either my Windows phone or my gaming machine would be nice.
YCHTT - I've watched stuff on my PC laptop using just a web browser at Periscope.tv

They also are available on the Diplomacy Games Twitter account (unless they drop off after a period of time? Don't know that bit as we're new to this). I tried working out how to do via Facebook Live and couldn't fucking work it out.
Cool. I'll check it out again. I wasn't able to find a way to do it.

Apologies if subscribers the past couple of days got played eps automatically downloading. We did nothing, assume something screwy happened with our podcast host Podbean. I've logged a job with them. Let me know if you experienced the same or similar issue so I can take it up with them.
Podbean's confirmed they were changing their settings and some podcasts were subsequently redownloaded. They've changed their settings back. Sorry about that folks.
Episode 15 is now out folks. Pop on over to DiplomacyGames.com, iTunes or Stitcher. Warning... longest ep yet at 2 hours 15 mins. We discuss a number of vDip games, the Calhamer auction, tourneys at webDip and discussion and interview about PlayDip. Enjoy!
Want to know what happens when Kaner & I get through 6 drinks with the mike on? A shit load of swearing, slurring and occasional rare insights of Diplomacy brilliance!

Episode 16 is now out. We talk metagaming arseholes, new variant ideas, playing live Dip games and an old VDip favourite: Colonial Diplomacy.

As always tune in at DiplomacyGames.com, iTunes or Stitcher. Remember to subscribe to get new episodes automatically.

And please take the whole thirty seconds to rate and review the podcast in iTunes. It really helps us get the message about Dip out there!

Interesting discussion on metagaming. At one point, you asked about when it was OK to metagame, and to what extent.

The one place where I've encountered extensive (and expected) metagaming was at a face-to-face tournament. It wasn't to the level of prearranged alliances, since we didn't know who would be at what table until a couple minutes before each round. However, as it was a multi-game tournament, players definitely had to consider how the result they pushed for would impact their opponents' multi-game scores.

That, and for the few games with repeat opponents, vengeance for a prior game's stab was a likely possibility.

The above post is a perfect example of why the distinction between metagaming and cross gaming needs to be made when discussing these topics. Metagaming is an open an acceptable behavior in certain settings, such as multi game tournaments.

"Metagaming is any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. Another definition refers to the game universe outside of the game itself."

In Diplomacy context this means game(s) within a game, such as a tournament where the larger competition consists of a series of games. As such metagaming is a benign, acceptable, and expected behavior.

Crossgaming is a malicious and prohibited behavior often misconstrued as metagaming. Crossgaming is where revenge, grudges, quid pro quo favors, automatic enemies/alliances occur. Outside of a tournament or specific setting where this is permitted as metagaming this behavior is unethical and onsidered cheating.

I'm interested as always to see hear what the podcast has to say about this, but I wish that people would stop lumping both behaviors into the broad category of metagaming. This casts a bad light on perfectly acceptable behavior, and clouds unacceptable behavior in ambiguity. I guess it's like arguing whether killing a man in war is murder, but there's a reason we make the distinction.
Thanks everyone for comments re metagaming. Kaner and I are getting together next week to sink a few drinks and will no doubt discuss this a little more.

Does anyone have any Diplomacy Dilemmas you would like us to cover off? Or Dip topics you would like explored?

Post here or PM Kaner or me.
Quick update, Kaner had work stuff that prevented recording this week, and Mrs Kaner is back next week after visiting the Arc De Trumpee. So the recording and podcast may be a little later than normal. Sorry folks.

Amby, kaner, I have to share this with you. Months ago, I was listening to the podcast while driving with my son. I'm not overly concerned with colorful language -- he hears worse at school, and I prefer he learns appropriateness and how to conduct himself in the world, rather than trying to shield him from everything and sending him out unprepared. Anyway, one of you said something about a player making a dick move, or being a dick, I don't remember exactly. My son piped up from the back seat, "Dad? What does that mean? I mean, I know what dick means, but what does it mean if someone's being a dick?"

I'd forgotten all about that, until yesterday while the family was watching a TV show and someone said that so-and-so was being a dick. My son said, "Well, I know what that means...thanks to kaner and Amby!"

My wife asked what I've been letting him listen to. I pointed out that she chose the TV show.
LOL! Brilliant response, DR!

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?
