Replacements needed for games.
Due to unforeseen circumstances this summer, I am in need of a replacement in 3 of the games I am playing. They are all anonymous Gunboat/Public Press games and are decent positions. PM me if interested and I will leave relevant information in my notes.

Quote Association Thread
Hello! I saw a thread like this scrawled on the wall of a Guatemalan insane asylum deep in the jungle primeval. We start with a quote, and you then post the one quote that pops into your mind after you read that quote. The first word is FIRST.

“The key to Springfield has always been Elm Street. The Greeks knew it. The Carthaginians knew it. Now you know it.”

WWII conference room decoration suggestions
I am going to decorate my conference room with a WWII theme. I have a couple of recruiting/propaganda posters and am thinking of putting a big map of the war or a number of individual maps of various theaters basically in their respective areas on a wall. Any suggestions or recommendations on what to buy and where to buy it?

Greeting vDippers.
It has come to my attention that quite a few players are unaware of the site rules. If you're a new player, or a vet and you haven't read over the site rules I'd urge you to do so. http://vdiplomacy.net/rules.php#Rules

These Diplomacy variants look beautiful and I have wanted to play them for years. Is anybody here working on bringing them to vDip?

Oli: I'm still shocked and very impressed by how quickly you responded to these feature requests. It does suck big time to lose data, but keep up the good work!

Yes...
PS: Variant is online: http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=97
You need to select Europe1600 in the gamecreate, as it's not possible to start the shortnames with a number..
Will make a site-announcement tomorrow.

I can see that the Sea Zone Caspian Sea has a name.
I can also see on the Map info that a Fleet can be in Caspian Sea.
But how could it move there ? Indeed, that Variant is not build anywhere, is it ?

Great work!

Retillion: The variant should not be build anywhere as far as I can tell. The Caspian sea zone is probably left over from the Realpolitik version Oli said he imported. That said, the Caspian is mentioned in the original map and in the province list the variant creator drew up.

Thank you, JECE.
JECE (1534 D)

Oli: This looks like it's just a painting error, but on the large map Pskov is shown as a supply center instead of Novgorod. I know that you mentioned that the large map was still imperfect. I'll keep an eye out for other details.
JECE (1534 D)
08 Jan 16 UTC
Retillion: The variant creator mentioned the following on the original outdated homepage "making it possible to the otherwise landlocked powers of Poland and Russia to build fleets." Therefore, at the time of writing, the game was not build anywhere. Unless the game was switched to build anywhere in a late iteration, I don't see how a fleet could make it to the Caspian Sea. It's odd that he bothered to name and list it.
Retillion (2304 D (B))
08 Jan 16 UTC
@ JECE : yes, of course, I indeed thought that it was not build anywhere but I wanted to be sure because of the possibly contradictory information. I would rather discover my mistake here in the forum rather than while playing a game, with possibly disastrous consequences !

Great news!

Two more details:
• On the big map, the left bank of the river/canal in the Crimea supply center seems to colored according to who controls Venice.
• It is 'Franche Comté' ('Free County' in English), not "France Comte". The accent is on the original list drawn up by the variant creator, but the 'h' is omitted there too. I think that we should give the creator the benefit of the doubt that the 'France' typo was an autocorrect mistake and fix the error here along with the accent.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

The correct spelling is :

Franche-Comté

I am positive about it because French is my native language.
Also, you can check it on :

JECE (1534 D)

I don't think the hyphen was there c. 1600:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comt%C3%A9_de_Bourgogne
Retillion (2304 D (B))
19 Jan 16 UTC
The hyphen appeared officially in 1478 :
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franche-Comt%C3%A9#Toponymie
Look in the paragraphe "Toponymie", at the second line.
JECE (1534 D)
19 Jan 16 UTC
Retillion: Perhaps my French is rusty (which it surely is), but I don't think that sentence helps us very much once you read on. As I read the paragraph, they propose several dates for the introduction of 'Free', with the hyphen only being included incidentally.
Retillion (2304 D (B))
19 Jan 16 UTC
@ JECE :

The text says that the name "Franche-Comté" appeared officially in 1478. Those words with that exact spelling can be seen on official texts from that time.
If you could read French, you would have understood that the oldest official document that shows the hyphen is from 1366 with the spelling "France-Comté".
That means that the hyphen is even older that the letter "h" wich appeared later for phonetic reasons.
→ That shows that, in 1600, the name "Franche-Comté" had been in use for at least 122 years.

I have given you a source of information.
What is yours for "not thinking the hyphen was there c. 1600" ?

Alain Manesson-Mallet's map: Cercle d'Alsace ou du Haut-Rhin, in Description de L'Univers published in 1683 shows it as Franche Comté; the Historic Map of the Duchy of Burgundy at 1588 by Abrham Ortelius shows it as La France Comte - in both cases without a hyphen. It did not become part of the French realm until about 1688. As with all spellings in Europe until the mass production of maps and books, geographical spellings were pretty much at the whim of the author. The Academie Francaise itself was pretty much the imposition of royalty as an attempt to unify the language which was as disparate as the UK in dialects and languages. I have given my sources too!

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?

Working on the Calhamer Prototype variant and interested in getting opinions on map design to keep it authenticate. In some cases the maps aren't clear and I'm interested in advice. Where's the best spot folks have found for posting?
